Bollywood 2008 saw a handful of news makers who created news for the good and bad reasons. Along with the news makers we also see the Bollywood Trends of 2008.
1. Bollywood Trends in the movies: Terrorism and Insane comedies: Yep, two significant trends were the highlights in the movies of 2008. Whereas 2007 belonged to sports with movies like Chak De India, Dhanadhan Goal, Tara rum pum etc, the year 2008 saw the Bollywood Trend shifting towards terrorism and insane comedies.
Three movies based on terrorist attacks and bomb blasts released in 2008: Aamir, Mumbai Meri Jaan and A Wednesday. All three did good business and all of them were widely apprericated for their treatment. While Mumbai Meri Jaan was documentary style, Aamir and A Wednesday were thrilling. Of the three, A Wednesday was the biggest hit, dark horse movie of the year and perhaps gave maximum returns over the cost.
Another Bollywood trend that was witnessed was that people preferred mindless joyrides with stupid plots, but entertaining nevertheless. In that category, movies like Singh is Kinng, Golmaal Returns and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi did brisk business. Singh is Kinng amassed Rs.48 crores in the first week, Golmaal Returns earned a stunning Rs.72 crore in the first week, while Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi amassed Rs.60 crores in the first week. Presently, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi is still running successfully, having earned half the revenue from overseas and it is believed by the time Ghajini releases, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi will earn more than Rs.80 crore, making it the biggest hit in 2008, so far.
2. Supersuccess of A.R.Rahman: The man with the midas touch in music, A.R.Rahman came with gems of music for all his four Bollywood albums: Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, Jodhaa Akbar, Yuvvraaj and Ghajini. He is all set to win all Bollywood awards including Filmfare Awards 2009 for best music. For more on Bollywood awards, see the calculated prediction. A.R.Rahman also fared well with his non filmi album Ada. Rahman is also in the reckoning for Golden Globe award for his work in Slumdog Millionaire created by Danny Boyle. Check out the top Hindi film songs of 2008!
3. Love is in the air: If Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor painted the tinsel town red, 2008 saw Ranbir Kapoor and Deepika Padukone painting a pretty picture in magazines, premieres, functions, award nites. They were seen unabashedly flaunting each other; Deepika also embellished the back of her neck with a tattoo: R.K.
4. Fight is in the air: Two of the popular Khans Shahrukh Khan and Salman Khan almost came to blows in Katrina Kaif's birthday party on July 16. Depending on whose side you are, both of them argued and fought like 5th standard children. Since that day, both of them do not acknowledge each other's presence. Here's more dope into why Salman Khan got wild and angry that evening.
5. Aamir calls Shahrukh Khan his 'dog': Aamir Khan went a little overboard and received brickbats for his comment on his blog, where he referred to good friend Shahrukh Khan 'his dog' Though Shahrukh Khan himself didn't mind the comment and said that both of them have a dig at each other's expense, SRK's fans were not amused and Aamir's blog was filled with hate comments. Read about the dog between SRK and Aamir Khan!
6. The year of Gay stereotypes: Karan Johar 'not so offensive' film on gays Dostana had two main lead actors acting gay for surviving in the US. However, what was irking, almost all the male characters in the film were shown either ineffeminate or gay. Such kind of excess stereotyping was also seen in Madhur Bhandarkar's Fashion where almost every male in the fashion industry was shown gay. C'mon!
7. The year of the big flops and recession: Massive big budgeted movies like Drona, Love Story 2050, Tashan and Mission Istanbul flopped and fell like nine pins. Big time corporates which had bought these films regretted their decision and some distributors are still trying to come to terms with the losses. Add to this the recession; following which main lead actors have decided to reduce their fees. Actors who were charging a crore plus have brought their fees to Rs.50 lakhs or so. Read about the biggest Bollywood flops of 2008.
8. The year of Bollywood Blogging trend: The film fraternity plunged into the blogging trend with ferocity. Leading the pack was Amitabh Bachchan whose blog is a 'blog buster 'with fans and viewers religiously readings his posts. Big B's command over the language, his clear flow of thoughts and his disciplined sense of adding posts nearly every day has won him an extra legion of fans. Aamir Khan is second in popularity with his blog getting a lot of traffic, especially during the time when he called 'SRK' a dog. Other actors who joined the blog fever in 2008 were Salman Khan, Ram Gopal Verma, Pooja Bedi etc. Read more about Bollywood stars who are blogging.

9. Ram Gopal Verma's antics antagonized and astounded many: Ram Gopal Verma never stops surprising and we are not talking about his films. Last year, he gifted Bollywood with the biggest ever commercial flop in history with Ram Gopal Verma ki Aag, this year, he brought a government down!
Ram Gopal Verma had accompanied chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh and son Riteish Deshmukh for checking the state of Taj hotel after the terror attack of 26/11, Mumbai. This brought in scalding criticism from the common man, media and even the film fraternity. 'Why did he have to go there?' was everyone's common query. So much that there were smses which went " Ram Gopal Verma has made two Sarkars. One was a hit and the other he pulled down"
Speaking of Sarkar, earlier in the year, the sequel Sarkar Raj was a lukewarm hit and so did Phoonk, which made Mr. Verma cover some lost ground.
10. Figure out size zero: Actresses shed their weight and their clothes, to slip themselves in the itsy bitsy bikinis. Prominent among them were Amisha Patel for Thoda Pyaar Thoda Magic, Kareena Kapoor for Tashan and Minissha Lamba for Kidnap. The movies tanked and their bikinis disappeared before they could say "it was part of the script". Moral of the story: " In Bollywood, Sex does not always sell, Shahrukh Does!"
