Luck By Chance review: Luck By Chance disappoints

If you want to know how Luck By Chance is in one line, it is slow and shallow. If you want to know more, read on.

Story of Luck By Chance: Vikram Jaisingh(Farhan Akhtar) is a Bollywood aspirant who dreams of making it big. He lives with a couple of friends in Mumbai, one of them a TV actor. Sona(Konkana Sen Sharma) is working with a small time producer Chaudhry(Aly Khan)who promises her a plum role, some day in exchange of sexual favors. Sona and Vikram meet by chance, and fall in love. In another part of the glitzy world, a successful producer Romy Rolly who is launching a film starring Zafar Khan(Hrithik Roshan) and debutante star-daughter Niki(Isha Sherwani) , gets a set-back when Zafar abandons the film to work for Karan Johar. Niki’s mother Neena(Dimple Kapadia) who once a huge star, wants her daughter to work with Zafar Khan for her first film. But with Zafar Khan leaving, the producer Romy is left in a lurch.

Sona feels betrayed and distraught when the producer Chaudhry says that there is no role for her. She however leaves a photo of Vikram for him to peruse. The picture lands up at Romy’s office and his wife (played by Juhi Chawla) feels Vikram is apt for the role. A screen test later, Vikram Jaisingh is signed for the lead role. As the popularity of Vikram increases, he began to distance himself from his friends and his girlfriend. He also starts to fancy his heroine Niki who gives in to his advances. The grapevine and the media takes full advantage of this situation and creates controversy about how Vikram has used mother and daughter(Neena and Niki) to further his ambitions and how he has hidden the truth about his girlfriend. The bad news works in Vikram’s favor and his first film with Niki begins a hit. Sona who has parted ways with Vikram, starts to work in serials trying to establish her own identity.

Plus points of Luck By Chance:
The beginning. A couple of scenes where Farhan is shown practicing in the acting class, show that the movie could have great momentum. Sadly, it doesn’t. The performances save the day again in this boring film, especially the performances of Dimple Kapadia, Rishi Kapoor, Konkana Sen Sharma and Farhan Akhtar(in that order)

Minus points:
Luck By Chance is not honest to its title. The movie is less about the ‘struggle’ and more about two timing. The protagonist gets to the top without much of an effort and you hardly get to see the fighting spirit or endurance of the protagonist, which would have been inspiring to say the least. As for the plot, it moves at a snail’s place. The first half is very slow and the second half is cliché. The screenplay is not up to the mark and you feel in the first half that the movie is going round and round, without heading anywhere.

There are many scenes which were not required and there are many sequences which could have led to great entertainment, had they been shown. For instance, the scene where Niki comes to meet Vikramsingh secretly, has a lot of promise but fizzles away. Also there are a lot of hypocritical elements and clichés in Bollywood, which could have been shown. A lot of on-set shooting sequences could have been shown.

A bucketful of guest appearances thrown in for effect, are not even worth talking about. You will miss Kareena Kapoor if you excuse yourself for a sneeze. Only Shahrukh Khan with an impactful one-scene and Anurag Kashyap as the writer who writes films watching foreign DVDS, make an impact. Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy is disappointing. The movie demanded high quality music and a moving/inspiring sound-track, which is missing. The chemistry between Farhan Akhtar and Konkona Sen Sharma is missing, the director skips talking about how the relationship developed. In one scene, there are talking formally and in the next scene, they are hugging and kissing.

Take notice Hrithik Roshan takes a dig at Shahrukh Khan in Luck By Chance, in a dialogue wherein he says that he is just an employee who works for Zafar Khan, the star. This is a line which SRK usually uses in his interview.

Best scenes of Luck By Chance:
1. A smart scene where Farhan Akhtar walks up to Dimple Kapadia at a party and floors her by flattering her to the skies.
2. Aly Khan telling Konkana Sen Sharma point blank that she cannot be cast in the movie he is planning for, and the subsequent break-down and regaining of composure done brilliantly by Konkona Sen Sharma.

Performances of Luck By Chance:
Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia stand out in terms of performance. Isha Sherwani does a neat job. Konkana as usual, gives in a measured performance. Farhan Akhtar underplays his role and gives a subtle touch to his role. Hrithik Roshan does not elicit the ‘wow’ appeal he is known for, and does an understated job, even though he is the ‘star’ in the film.

Conclusion: A movie like Halla Bol showed the story of a struggler in a better manner. Luck By Chance does not inspire, does not really go beyond the cliché and does not portray Bollywood in its naked truth. It plays safe and saccharine; we would have loved it, if there was spice in it.

Shahrukh Khan as Mogambo in Mr.India 2?

Shahrukh Khan who became a popular Bollywood star thanks to his negative roles, will probably go back to 'bad boy' role, playing the most lovable negative role of "Mogambo" that was immortalized by Amrish Puri in Mr. India in the year 1987. Shekhar Kapoor, the director of Mr.India is planning a sequel which will have Shahrukh Khan stepping on the shoes of the late Amrish Puri.

It is not known whether Shahrukh Khan has given his consent yet, but it is also true that both the director and actor are keeping a low profile about the developments. Shekhar Kapoor who was thinking of making Paani is concentrating his efforts in making Mr.India 2 now.

Why SRK? Here is what a source claims

“This film will also star Anil Kapoor and Sridevi as in the original but the script has been turned to be make it more villain centric. Today, there are very few villains who have the towering personality required for the Mogambo type of role, which was played with flourish by the late Amrish Puri in the original. And who better than Shah Rukh, who has excelled in negative roles like Baazigar and Darr, to play the role?” He continues "It will be the role of a lifetime for Shah Rukh. There will tremendous curiosity about how he enacts it. Yes, the film Mr India is a big name by itself but people will flock to the theatres more because Shah Rukh is getting into the shoes of Amrish Puri than for the film itself".

Ghajini has shattered inflation to a mere myth by becoming the biggest possible hit in the least possible time. Aamir Khan's stunning eight pack body has won many fans; one of them being Katrina Kaif.

Recently in an interview, Katrina Kaif commented that Aamir Khan has the best body in Bollywood.

Aamir Khan must be really happy to get this compliment from arguably, the sexiest girl in Bollywood. Aamir Khan in his non chalant style has remarked,"I’m flattered by what Katrina said.If you ask me, I like John’s physique. I think he has a great body. I only did what was required for my role. I think Salman has got a great physique, too.” Salman Khan may be happy to hear the later part of the compliment, but he may have second thoughts about Johnny boy. Butt obvious?

The secret of Aamir Khan's perfectionist nature revealed

What is it that makes Aamir Khan strike gold everytime at the box office(Ghajini proved to be a diamond) What is the secret of Aamir Khan to do daringly different roles everytime. It is the late legendary actor and politician Sunil Dutt. Aamir Khan tells how his perspective on film making changed while he was doing Parampara with Sunil Dutt, way back in 1993.

Here's what Aamir Khan has to say
"I was working with him in Yash Chopra's Parampara and during a particular scene, which required Duttsaab to ride a horse, he asked the action director Tinnu Verma to bring him a wild horse instead of a tame one. Ironically the wild horse's name was Masoom (meaning innocent). It was amazing how Duttsaab was able to tame the horse in just 10 minutes. He went galloping through the terrains of Ooty and disappeared for 10 minutes. We all were so worried and before we could do anything, we saw him coming back with the horse totally under control. He then told Yashji that he was ready for the shot. When I asked him why he wanted a difficult horse instead of a tame one, he said because he wanted it to reflect on screen that the horse was wild and that would add to the fire in his shot,."

Now you know why Aamir Khan dares to do 'different' films everytime

Raaz 2 review: Raaz 2 The Mystery Continues…to bore

Raaz 2 directed by Mohit Suri was touted to be a worthy successor to the super cool horror movie Raaz(2002). Sadly Raaz 2 does not even measure up to even half of what Raaz offered, be it in terms of content or horror. Much to your horror, you will find Raaz 2 has many clichéd scenes delving in elements which you have seen many times.

Story of Raaz 2: Kangana Ranaut plays Nandita Chopra, a model who is in a relationship with Yash Dayal (Adhyayan Suman), an ambitious director of a TV reality show “Andhvishwas” Meanwhile in a place called Kalindhi, a foreigner witnesses a man mutilating himself in the name of devil. The foreigner too commits a suicide. Prithvi(Emran Hashmi) is an artist who had subconsciously drawn the picture of Nandita. He chances upon the owner of the face he has drawn and stalks her. Eerie things begin to befall Nandita and she begins to react the same way as was depicted in the paintings. Prithvi warns Nandita that a torturous death awaits her too, because he had drawn the picture of her dying. However when Nandita is about to kill herself because of a ghastly(ghostly) force, Prithvi manages to save her. Together Nandita and Prithvi try to seek what is the real reason behind the spooky things haunting Nandita. How Prithvi manages to save Nandita’s life and the truth behind the spooky incidents forms the rest of Raaz 2.

Plus points of Raaz 2: The director creates a right and apt situation for horror sequences; a couple of scenes are genuinely scary.

Minus points of Raaz 2: Raaz 2 does not have any kind of freshness in terms of horror. All the sequences that are injected have a déjà vu feel. Though a certain kind of apprehensiveness is created, the impact is lost, and is not even half of what 1920 or Raaz. Most of the horror scenes in Raaz 2 are disjointed and are just for effect without leading towards the plot. One cannot understand why Nandita is made a scapegoat when she had nothing to do with the problem that the dead man(Jackie Shroff) had. Though the songs by Raju Singh are good, they do not have lasting value.

Performances in Raaz 2: The spirited Kangana Ranaut is in top form in Raaz 2. She has never looked better as she has in Raaz 2. Also Kangana Ranaut’s character in the beginning looks like an extension of her role in Fashion. Emraan Hashmi plays his character well. Adhyayan Suman still has a long way to go; he gets his bearings only in the climax scenes.

Conclusion: Raaz 2 suffers from a bad script and half baked horror scenes. Mohit Suri’s Raaz 2 is nowhere near Vikram Bhatt’s fear ridden Raaz and 1920.

Akshay moves along with Ranvir Shourey in a bid to realize his brave past. Along the way he meets Deepika Padukone and they set off in a series of adventures.

  • Billu Barber: If Aamir Khan adapted a movie Ghajini from the south last year, Shahrukh Khan does a similar thing this. Billu Barber produced by Shahrukh Khan is loosely based on the friendship between Kishen and Sudama and also borrows from the Malayalam superhit Kuselan. Shahrukh Khan plays himself in the movie(call it an extended special appearance) while Irrfan Khan, who is the protagonist plays a small town barber. Whatever the fate of the film, one thing is for sure: you will blown away by the performances of two of the best actors of Bollywood.
  • Delhi 6: The best director of 2006 Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra produces and directs this film. It is an autobiographic take on his growing days in Delhi. The film should be the trump card for actress Sonam Kapoor. It also stars Abhishek Bachchan. There is a huge expectation from the director who started a revolution with Rang De Basanti.

  • Delhi Belly: Imran Khan who had played two distinct roles in hit Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na and flop Kidnap, comes back in a frothy comedy, to be made by the best producer in Bollywood, yep you guessed it right, Aamir Khan. There is buzz that Delhi Belly is an adult comedy with 'strong language' and sexual innuendos. The movie Delhi Belly is being marketed as an adult copy, appealing to a niche audience and international market. The film is directed by Abhinav Deo.

  • New York: Kabir Khan who surprised us pleasantly with "Kabul Express" comes back in 2009 with a taut thriller called 'New York' . New York stares Katrina Kaif, Neil Nitin Mukesh and John Abraham who has stripped himself to the buff(rejoice girls!) for a particular sequence of the film. New York is a contemporary story of three friends whose lives are scarred events beyond their control.

  • Luck by Chance: The man of multiple talents Farhan Akhtar stars in what could be one of the finest Bollywood movie release to 2009.The star studded release include Hrithik Roshan, Rishi Kapoor, Konkona Sen Sharma, Dimple Kapadia, Isha Sherwani, Juhi Chawla and Sanjay Kapoor. Luck By Chance is a take on the aspiring actor with stars in his eyes, who wants to get a foothold in the Bollywood industry. It is a movie about how much of an impact does luck play in Bollywood.

  • 8 x 10: This will be Akshay Kumar’s first ‘non-filmi’ movie if one can use this term. In a relatively low budget film directed by the ever dependable Nagesh Kukoonoor and produced by Percept, it will portray Akshay Kumar as a man who can look into the past of dead people by touching objects that belonged to them. Inspired lightly by ‘Sixth Sense,’ this film is a must watch.

  • Alibaug; Directed by Sanjay Gupta, it has a bevy of actors: Sunjay Dutt, Sanjay Suri, Diya Mirza, ROhit Roy and Maushmi Makhija. The story deals with nine youths who have just graduated from college and are looking at the real world that awaits them.

  • Alladin : Alladin is an interpretation of Arabian Nights. It stars Riteish Deshmukh as Alladin and Amitabh Bachan as the genie. Expect a lot of special effects in this funny tale. Sanjay Dutt also stars in the film as a villain called Ringmaster, directed by Sujoy Ghosh.

  • Ajab Prem ki Ghajab Kahani: Raj Kumar Santoshi, one of the prolific directors of Bollywood, attempts to bring the magic of Andaaz Apna Apna once again with a comic caper cum love story, Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. The movie has a simple story of Ranbir Kapoor who moves around in his life, aimlessly. He keeps on fooling around till he meets Katrina Kaif and falls in love with her. After that the fun and madness begins.

  • * Aashayein: Aashayein directed by Nagesh Kukunoor stars Ayesha Takia and John Abraham. John Abraham plays a compulsive gambler suddenly discovers that he is a victim of terminal illness, and that he has only 90 days to live. He is admitted to a hospital where he discover love, companionship and the beautiful meaning of life.

  • Kambhakkt Ishq: One of the most talked about movies, Kambhaqt Ishq has beeen in news since 2008. Kambakth Ishq has cameo roles from major Hollywood stars including Sylvester Stallone and Denise Richards. The film stars Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor. Akshay Kumar who plays stuntman, will be back in his action avatar, doing dare devil stunts. The movie also stars Aftab Shivdasani, Amrita Arora and is directed by debutant Sabir Khan. Kambakth Ishq is produced by Sajid Nadiadwala.

  • London Dreams: London Dreams, one of the most expensive movies of 2009 stars Salman Khan, Ajay Devgan and Asin. London Dreams is a story about two pop stars Salman Khan and Ajay Devgan who fall in love with a South Indian girl, Asin.

  • Rensil D' Silva's next: Rensil D'Silva who was Rang De Basanti's screenplay writer become director with this film. It is a thriller with global terrorism in the background. The movie stars Saif Ali Khan, Vivek Oberoi and Kareena Kapoor. Karan Johar is the producer.
  • Hissss: Hissss is synoymous with Mallika Sherwat. Hollywood collaborates with Bollywood to produce Hissss. Mallika plays a snake who is on the way to seek vengeance. An American visitor steps into the jungles of India and kills the female snake's mate which makes her seek revenge. Expect a lot of special effects in this flick. Apparently Mallika Sherwat who is dressed in a painfully heavy snake costume(she couldnt even go to the loo for 10 hours flat while shooting for this film) has no dialogue to mouth in the film.

  • De Dhana Dhan: Priyadarshan is back with his style of comedy with De Dana Dhan. The movie stars the current hot onscreen pair-Katrina Kaif and Akshay Kumar. Suniel Shetty and Paresh Rawal also star in the film, hopefully to recreate the Hera-Pheri magic, 9 years ago. De Dana Dhan is a story of two broke guys who are in search of big money, to prove a point to their girlfriends. The movie also stars Sameera Reddy and Neha Dhupia.

  • What's Your Rashee: Director Ashutosh Gowariker tries a love story with What's Your Rashee? starring lovers Priyanka Chopra and Harman Baweja. The movie is an adaptation of a Gujarati novel by Shri Madhu called Kimbali Ravenswood. The romantic movie is a story about how Harman Baweja has just ten days to win over the love of his life, Priyanka Chopra.

  • Kaminay: One of the most prolific directors, Vishal Bharadwaj comes back with a bang in Kaminay, starring Shahid Kapur, Priyanka Chopra and Amol Gupte(the creative director of Taare Zameen Par). Easily one of the awaited films of 2009, you will see Shahid Kapur in a double role here. The look of Shahid is going to be totally different for Kaminay and it is reportedly kept under the wraps. The movie is supposed to be a comedy with a difference.

  • Imtiaz Ali's next film: Imtiaz Ali, who had given the saccharine sweet Jab We Met, two years ago, comes up with a romantic intense tale, which stars Deepika Padukone and Saif Ali Khan. Though the story is kept under wraps, it will be a true-blue love story of 2009.

  • Wake Up Sid: Call it unconventional romantic pairing, but we have Konkona Sen Sharma and Ranbir Kapoor starring in Wake Up Sid, directed by debutant Ayaan Mukherjee. It is a Karan Johar production. Will be interesting to see how people from two different genres, Konkona and Ranbir do with this one.

  • It's My Life: The sweetheart of Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na(2008) pairs up with Harman Baweja in the movie Its My Life. The movie is directed by the director with the superhit track record, Anees Bazmee.
  • Wanted-Dead or Alive: Starring the muscular Salman Khan and the voluptuous Ayesha Takia, Wanted-Dead or Alive should be the first big hit of the most under rated performer of Bollywood, Ms. Takia. Prabhudeva’s first Bollywood directorial venture is a remake of his Tamil-Telugu blockbuster Pokiri. The pairing of the two beautiful actors is wonderful and the chemistry is going to sizzle the screen.

  • Blue: Blue, one of the most expensive film of Bollywood ever(budget more than Rs.100 crores), has Sanjay Dutt, Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Lara Dutta and Zayed Khan in lead roles. The action film is shot in Bahamas and is written by American writers Joshua Lurie and Bryan M. Sullivan. The movie has a lot of underwater scenes and dare devil stunts by Akshay Kumar. A.R.Rahman has given music for the film. Australian singer Kylie Minogue has been reportedly paid 1.5 million dollars to sing for Rahman, Antony D'Souza is to direct the film.

  • Dhobighaat: Dhobighaat is Aamir Khan's wife Kiran's directorial debut. Ace Khan-Aamir Khan has been roped in to play a prominent role in the film. The film also stars Prateik Babbar. The movie explores the underbelly of Mumbai.

  • Kites: One of the much awaited Bollywood release of 2009, Kites is Hrithik Roshan's mega budget film for 2009. The film produced by Rakesh Roshan has director Anurag Basu directing this film.Kites has Hrithik playing a salsa teacher. Kangana plays a very rich girl, who is also Hrithik's dance student. The story is set in Las Vegas. In the course of learning Salsa from him, Kangana falls madly in love with him. But then a twist in the tale takes place and the romantic story takes a thriller turn. Barbara Mori plays a Spanish speaking girl and will be seen in the first half of the film. In the film she speaks only in Spanish and Hrithik who plays the salsa teacher can’t speak a word of Spanish. So he speaks to her in Hindi and yet the two communicate and fall madly in love. But then something happens that forces the two to split and that’s where Kangana steps in.

  • My Name is Khan: Shahrukh Khan stars along with his most succesful on-screen heroine Kajol in the Karan Johar film, My Name is Khan. To be released at the fag end of the year, Shahrukh Khan plays the role of an autistic patient, a la Dustin Hoffman in Rainman. The film My Name is Khan will be the most challenging film for Karan Johar and it has terrorism as a backdrop.
  • 3 Idiots: Arguably the most successful director of Bollywood, Raju Hirani releases 3 Idiots, an adaptation of Chetan Bhagat's Five Point Someone. Easily, one of the most promising films of 2009, this film has Aamir Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Sharman Joshi, R.Madhavan and Mona Singh. The movie is a light hearted comedy on the education system of India. Since the last couple of years, Aamir Khan has developing the habit of ending the year with a bang. He did it for Taare Zameen Par(2006) and Ghajini(2007). With the movie 3 Idiots to release in December this year, will Aamir Khan be third time lucky?
