Feroz Khan dead, loses battle with cancer

Feroz Khan, the original cowboy of Bollywood is dead. He died at his farm house in Bangalore, after fighting a long battle with cancer. He was 69. Feroz Khan has contributed a lot towards the 'style and panache' of Bollywood cinema. His movie Qurbani, made in the 80s looks so fresh, that you have the feeling that it has been made recently.

Feroz Khan, the Clint Eastwood of India, has other gems like Jaanbaaz, Dharmatma and Yalgaar. Feroz Khan's last film Welcome(2007) is among the biggest hits of Bollywood.

Nauman Sait, winner of MTV Roadies 6.0

Nauman Sait is the winner of MTV Roadies 6.0. Nauman Sait won MTV Roadies by defeating fellow finalist Kiri in a tough weight pulling competition. Brute force and raw courage was the order of the day, as both the tasks were more about giving it all for Roadies 6.0, raw natural instinct to win. The finale was simply as Raghu would like to call it, Hell Down Under.

Earlier Palak who was one of the finalists lost out on the game, and Kiri had to battle it out with Nauman Sait. Nauman and Kiri had the last MTV Roadies task where they were chained at their hands, neck and legs, and they had to move forward in raw determination and grab the MTV Roadies flag. Nauman literally gave his all, blood included as he bruised his leg. Though blood seeped out, Nauman went ahead, unwavering to grab the MTV Roadies flag and win MTV Roadies 6.0.

Amitabh Bachchan plays Progeria patient in Paa: A Potential Award Winner

Amitabh Bachchan fans can rejoice. The prolific actor par excellence has been quite experimental in his roles of late, be it a teacher suffering from memory loss in Black, an old man in love with a woman in her thirties in Cheeni Kum, an ageing patriarch in Sarkar Raj 2, and a ghost in Bhoothnath. But the best is yet to come.. Amitabh Bachan plays his most challenging role ever in Paa.

So what is Paa all about? It is the story of a boy who suffers from Progeria, an extremely rare genetic disorder in which a child ages three times faster than a normal human being. Amitabh will be playing that child with that rare terminal illness. He will be playing a 13 year old son, who looks 39. Abhishhek Bachchan and Vidya Balan will play parents to the child.


The team of Paa has been guarding the script fiercely for quite sometime and is confident that the film will strike a chord with the people. The team is planning to promote the film and most importantly create awareness of Progeria. We had Aamir Khan creating awareness about dyslexia through Taare Zameen Par. Keri, Palak and Nauman enter MTV Roadies finale

Raghu silenced the rumors that Sufi is the winner of MTV Roadies 6.0. Though Palak and Nauman were confirmed finalists, Raghu said the competition will not be so easy for them. He made it clear that the game had to be fair and just, and since two of them, Natasha and Sufi were out of the game because of Raghu's twist, he said they would be brought back into the final contention. The third person to qualify for the finals would be someone whom Roadies would vote for. 

It came as a pleasant surprise for many when the non-controversial Kiri was voted as the finalist. Now, it was to be a competition among Kiri, Sufi and Natasha to decide who would make it to the finals. The competition was to walk on a wooden plank four feet high from the ground, in dark, with strobe lights flashing in and out. Though the task looked easy, Kiri finished in a record time of 4 minutes and 17 seconds. Natasha finished in 10 minutes while Sufi couldn't complete the task successfully. So now, Kiri, Palak and Nauman are the finalists for MTV Roadies 6.0

Do not Copy- Hollywood warns Bollywood (The 'Furious' Case of Benjamin Button)

Hollywood is finally getting stricter about Bollywood lifting scripts and scenes from their films.Leading Hollywood studio Warner Bros has issued a press release in a tabloid stating that no one has the right to remake their film, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button in Bollywood. Advocates Lall & Sethi on behalf of Warner Bros Entertainment Inc stated, "Warner or its co-owner has not licensed any party to remake or make any film based upon the said film and shall initiate legal proceedings against any producer found producing a film either in English or Hindi or other language." They advocated stated, "We read reports in the newspapers that a well known Hindi film producer and director is remaking The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. That's why we issued this notice."

We had mentioned that Vipul Shah was keen on making a movie called Action Replay, that was on the lines of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (Read the story here)The movie will star Akshay Kumar and Aishwarya Rai in lead roles. When we asked Lall if Warner was referring to Vipul Shah, he said, "I don't want to take names. We just want to protect our scripts. We read that a popular Bollywood producer was remaking the Hollywood film The Departed in Hindi. We sent him a notice immediately."

Hindi films are known to rip off and plagiarize Hollywood films, some even going to the extent of copying it scene by scene. But now, Hollywood is determined to put an end to Bollywood lifting scripts, screenplay, plots and scenes from their movies illegally.The last time, a notice for plagiarism was issued by the court for David Dhawan's Partner, a copy of Will Smith smash-hit Hitch. Vipul Shah on his part defended his film Action Replay stating,"I never copy my films. I am not a DVD director. In fact, I have not even seen The Curious Case of Benjamin Button". He said the shooting is on schedule and he wont deviate from his movie. When Lall was informed that the movie Action Replay is adapted by a Gujarati play, he said that they would see the film first and then respond.

The writing is clear on the wall as Warner Bros proclaim legally,"we have put up a public notice and anybody who remakes The Curious Case of Benjamin Button without our permission risks losing money. We will take action."So, all the Bollywood producers who decide to make a living lifting Hollywood movies, making monies on the fly, will definitely have to rethink their strategy. Chad gaya upar re : “Chad gaya upar re” from Dalaal (1993) was criticized for its raunchy double entendre and suggestive dances. The first line of the song went “chad gaya upar re atariya pe lutan kabutar re”. The song featured Ayesha Jhulka, Mithun Chakrborty and bevy of female dancers.

Khada hain khada hain: This has to be the most provocative sounding song of Bollywood. ‘Khada hain Khada hain’ sung suggestively by Vinod Rathod for the movie Andaz(1993), featuring Anil Kapoor and Juhi Chawla shocked a lot of people. The line of the song went “Khada Hain Khada Hain, khada hain.. dar pe tere aashiq khada hain”

Main Mal Gaadi Tu Dhaka Laga: Andaz(1993) is one film which Anil Kapoor regrets doing. The double meaning film was peppered with vulgar songs. One of the songs went “Main Mal Gaadi Tu Dhaka Laga” with Anil Kapoor giving ‘dhakka’ to Juhi Chawla. The pressure of the censors changed the song from “Main Mal Gaadi Tu Dhaka Laga” to “Yeh Maal Gaadi tu Dhakka Laga”

Sar kai laio khatiya: Govinda and Karisma Kapoor were doing a fast forward version of Kamasutra in full clothes in Sar Kai Lo Khaitya number of Raja Babu(1994).

Chaiya chaiya: Chaiya Chaiya song from Dil Se(1998) was caught in controversy for the song ‘Paav ke neeche jannat hogi’.

Marjaani: The Marjaani song from Billu (2009) was in controversy for the line ‘Rab ki Hazoor mein kasme jo khayee.”

Darshan Do Ghansham: The song Darshan Do Ghan Sham sung by a blind beggar in the Oscar winner Slumdog Milllionaire ran into controversy when N S Nepali, the son of late poet-lyricist Gopal Singh Nepali complained that the original song was written by his father for the 1957 film Narsi Bhagat. While in the film, it is credited to 15th century poet Surdas.

Tasveer 8x10 sorely disappoints. One cannot believe that a director like Nagesh Kukunoor who has repertoire of films like Hyderabad Blues, Iqbal and Dor, dishes this half-baked bland excuse of a thriller. With a wonderful cast, Nagesh could have done a great job, but he hasn’t pulled it off. Tasveer 8x10 doesn’t manage to surprise you with a whodunit nor does it do a good job of making the thriller an edge of the seat excitement.


Story of Tasveer 8x10
Jai(Akshay Kumar) is a forest officer in Canada who begins to snooze when he sees a snap,there is a dip in his pulse rate, and blood drains from his body. All these are mere symptoms of his ability to envision future tense of a clicked image. But just when you expect the movie to unfold into a supernatural thriller, it becomes a simple murder mystery, where Jay’s dad drowns to death and the killer is roaming freely.

Jai has in his hands a photograph of four people that was clicked just before his dad’s death. Giving him company to solve the case is a detective (Javed Jaffery) who is suffering from paranoid delusion. Jai stares at the foursome photo and visualizes the death through each person’s mind. While doing so, he falls in momentary sleep. Seeing Akshay Kumar snoozing so many times is enough to put the viewer to sleep as well. You are able to guess the villain if you have seen enough thrillers but the director puts an unwanted twist just to make the movie seem a bit different. It doesn’t work.

Plus points of Tasveer 8x10
The camera work of the film and the setting in Canada is picture perfect. Though Tasveer is a visual treat, on the hindsight, the setting was not really required.

Minus points of Tasveer 8x10
1. The director had a good premise to make a supernatural thriller. He could have shown Akshay Kumar using supernatural powers in solving some real mindboggling cases. God knows, why he decided to subterfuge the plot into a regular who-dunnit. Why put the viewer through the torture of who really killed Jai’s dad? Will he really care? If you cannot INVOLVE the viewer in a thriller, there is no point making it.
2. Nagesh Kukunoor does not make the conventional thriller plot, an intriguing one. He opts the easy or rather the childish way out, making use of Jai’s photographic vision to unearth the clues to the case.
3. The climax is stretched and far-fetched.
4. There is no one single scene that can be thrill inducing or suspenseful. The plot has a lax appeal and the screenplay mechanics, that are a mainstay of a thriller, is totally amiss. Heck, Nagesh Kukunoor had a much better screenplay in his first movie Hyderabad Blues, that was made in a shoestring budget of just 15 lakhs.

Performances in Tasveer 8x10
Akshay Kumar sadly doesn’t impress much in Tasveer 8x10.. May be it is to do with the fact that he is playing a non comic role after a long time, which is why the audience cannot relate to him. Akshay Kumar seems to heading for another flop, successive to Chandni Chowk to China. The effervescent and beautiful Ayesha Takia somehow gives a bland performance, she doesn’t have much to do in the film. Also she looks like someone out to enjoy Canada rather than actually act in the film. The only person who impressed in Tasveer 8x10 is Javed Jaffery. Though his characterization seems half-baked, you can make out that he has improvised a lot.

Tasveer 8x10 in conclusion:
Nagesh Kukunoor is an inconsistent director. On one hand, he surprises you with Iqbal, Dor and Teen Deewarien. On the other hand, he kills you with Hyderabad Blues 2, Bombay to Bankok and Tasveer 8x10.
