New York - Bollywood Movie Review

New York is the best Yash Raj movie after Chak De India. There were theories that New York is a movie that has come way too late, considering it is based on 9/11. But more than dealing on 9/11 attacks, it is about how South East Asians were detained and treated like animals by the Bush government. One such person is Sameer(John Abraham). Read on to know more about New York movie review



Omar(Neil Nitin Mukesh) is arrested by the FBI as a set-up. The whole deal is that the FBI officer Roshan(Irrfan Khan) wants Omar to work as an undercover secret agent and infiltrate the life of his friends Sameer (John) and Maya (Katrina) who were his friends 8 years back. Roshan has an inkling that Sameer is running a sleeper terrorism cell and wants him caught red-handed. Omar agrees on the condition that there would be no harm done to Sameer.

The trio, Maya, Sameer and Omar were college friends and Omar used to secretly love Maya but the latter was interested in Sameer. When Omar came to know about this, he discreetly backed out of their lives and decided not to interfere in their married life, till the FBI made him enter the lives of the couple. Omar is exposed to a lot of things in Sameer's life that make him confused about whether he should really spy on his friend or back out of the plan laid by the FBI.

Plus points of New York:
1. Well-researched film. Full marks to director Kabir Khan and his team for coming up with an interesting subject. He proved that he was quality material with Kabul Express and New York is yet another confirmation.
2. Adherence to the subject at hand: New York does not deviate from its plot and keeps going steady. The pace of the movie is good and the performances are commendable.

Minus points of New York:
1 The movie may not catch the fancy of the masses. At the cost of authenticity, New York may lose vernacular audience. The movie touches some crucial points and the dialogues are delivered in English. In fact, 40 percent of the movie is English. So, New York a movie with a universal theme may come across as a niche subject that may be patronized by multiplex crowd.

2. The movie is similar to Fanaa, Don-The Chase Begins and Jannat in some areas. Though they are not intended, you may experience a feeling of Deja vu while seeing New York.

3. The climax is a bit skewed and though there can be 'n' number of ways at how the movie could have ended, what is shown may not be agreeable to viewers. Also, Neil Nitin Mukesh does not say 'the right urgent things' to John Abraham at the climax and his lines sound filmy and corny at the end.

Best scenes of New York:
New York had some amazing scenes that are worth applauding:
1. The frisking scene of Katrina Kaif by a cop at wee hours of midnight
2. Irrfan Khan's talk about why America is and always be the land of opportunities. He tells why inspite of being a Muslim, the US has looked at his credentials and given him the job to check on sleeper terrorist activities which were run by muslims.
3. The end credits which show information on how Asians were subjected to illegal detention after 9/11-really leaves an impact.
4. The gory detention scenes really make you cringe.

Performances in new York:
John Abraham after a long time, has come up with a very good performance, perhaps his best after Jism. He is totally in his element and plays his role very well. Katrina Kaif too has got a meaty role to chew on, and she does a very good job at it. Watch Katrina Kaif emote during the preclimax and climax scenes...she is superb. Neil Nitin Mukesh pulls on a superbly restrained performance. The pick of the lot is Irrfan Khan, a flawless performance. He manages to dominate almost all the scenes where he features, and that too effortlessly.

1. Shiney Ahuja: Accused of raping an 18 year old maid on Sunday June 14' 2009Preliminary medical reports on the victim have proved positive. Shiney Ahuja claims that they had consensual sex but the medical reports show 'force' used on the victim. Read more here

2.Madhur Bhandarkar: Accused of 'casting couch' and rape. Prolific director Madhur Bhandarkar hit headlines in 2004 when a small-time actress of B-grade films, Preeti Jain accused the Madhur Bhandarkar of raping her 16 times. The director however got a clean chit in the case. It turned out that Preeti Jain was involved in a physical relationship with Bhandarkar, but when things didn't go her way, she cried 'rape'.

3.Aman Verma: He earned the tag 'naughty boy' of Bollywood after sting operation on him showed him propositioning to a woman and acting sleazy in the video that was shot through a hidden camera. Aman Verma protested that the video was misleading.

4. Shakti Kapoor: Shakti Kapoor found himself in big trouble when he was also caught in the sting operation from IndiaTV(the same channel caught Aman Verma too). This was not really rape, but an expose on the casting couch scandal. A visibly drunk Shakti Kapoor was seen proposing a girl of a career in films in exchange of sexual favors. He cited examples of top female actors of Bollywood who had gone through it. Shakti Kapoor too claimed that the video was fabricated.

5.Ramesh Bhatkar: Famous Marathi actor Ramesh Bhatkar found himself in trouble in a rape case in Pune. The industry was shocked because the actor had a squeaky clean character.

6. Aditya Panscholi: Actor Aditya Pancholi had consensual sex with his 15-year old maid after convincing her that he would help her to become an actress. Though it was consensual sex, it was actually rape as the maid was a minor. At that time, he was dating Pooja Bedi, who dumped him after finding out that the allegations were right.

Shiney Ahuja Maid a Big Mistake!

Shiney Ahuja has been arrested for raping his 19 year old maid at his residence on Sunday afternoon. The actor admitted that he had indeed raped her. Preliminary tests conducted on his domestic help has confirmed sexual assault.

It is totally embarrassing and totally unacceptable of Shiney Ahuja to risk blowing up his entire career for a quickie. Support from film industry is not likely because a star to rape a domestic help is embarrassing, and many would like to stay away from this issue.The 36-year-old actor has been booked under Section 376 (rape), Section 346 (wrongful restraint) and Section 506 (threat to kill) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). If the charges are proved, they attract a minimum jail term of seven years.

Which Bollywood movie sequel was the best ever?

Bollywood sequels are usually hot subjects especially when the first part or prequel does really well at the box office. Don 2, which is a sequel to SRK-starrer Don, will release in 2011. That's quite a lot of time, considering Don-The Chase Begins released in 2006. This is because now, Bollywood sequels are being churned out at an alarmingly fast rate. The sequel of Dostana is already underway while the sequel of the superhit thriller Race is at the scripting stage. Jaane Tu Ya Jaana Na sequel is also being thought of. Usually, Bollywood movie sequels release within a gap of 2 or 3 years.

As we know, a sequel is not a remake. To put it simply, Don-The Chase Begins was a jazzed up remake of the classic hit Don(Amitabh Bachchan starrer), but Don-2 will be the sequel. This simply means we will now have the same suave gadget-friendly, smooth talking Don involved in an adventure of a different kind. Usually, the characters, the setting or cast of sequel remain the same as the prequel. A sequel movie is something which is a continuation or extension to the prequel or the former plot. For instance, Raaz 2(2009) is not a sequel to Raaz.(2000)

Coming to Bollywood sequels, here are some really famous and not so famous Bollywood sequels:
1. Dhoom 2(2006) was a major blockbuster hit (one of the highest box office earners ever) and sequel to the hit Dhoom (2004) (Sequel gap: 2 years)

3. Hathyar(2002) traced the life of Raghu's son who also ends up as a gangster, a sequel to arguably one of Sanjay Dutt's best films Vaastav(1999). However Hathyar flopped miserably at the box-office (Sequel gap:3 years)

4. Lagey Raho Munnabhai(2006) was a cult super hit, winning 4 national awards and the lovable term 'Gandhigiri'. The Sanjay Dutt starrer was a bigger hit than its predecessor, a very good film in its own right, Munnabhai MBBS(2003) (Sequel gap: 3 years)

5. Sarkar Raj (2008), a sequel to the successful Sarkar (2005) did not work as well as its prequel which was far more interesting and full of intensity. (Sequel gap: 3 years)

6.Golmaal Returns(2008),a mad cap comedy was the second biggest hit of 2008, second only to Ghajini. Golmaal Returns was a successful sequel to the hit Golmaal(2006) (Sequel gap: 2 years)

7. Phir Hera Pheri(2006), the sequel to Hera Pheri(2000) was no match to the original cult comedy. However the sequel did a decent business at the box-office.
