London Dreams Movie Review: Sad Music, Bad Climax, Funny Salman

London Dreams produced and directed by Vipul Shah, on a grand platform, looks like it is made by two directors. At some places, the movie is excellent with good grip on drama and smooth handling of comedy and at other places, it looks amateurish and unconvincing. Though the director of course is one, the script stills look the culprit here as it did for the other much-hyped Blue. Other than this, London Dreams is a good one-time watch, if you are able to digest the loopholes in the script. You can afford to have the ‘devil may care’ attitude about logic in movies like All the Best, but movies like London Dreams and Blue, should have no room for errors
Story of London Dreams

London Dreams is inspired from the 1984 classic film Amadeus, which was a take on Mozart, and the story of two music directors. A similar kind of story was seen some years ago in the insipid Shakalaka Boom Boom. In that one, Bobby Deol had played the role that Ajay Devgan essays in this film, and Upen’s role has been played by Salman Khan

Story of London Dreams:
London Dreams revolves around the lives of two childhood kids Arjun (Ajay Devgan) and Mannu ( Salman Khan). Arjun has it in his DNA to be a musician and his dream is to perform at London’s Wembly Stadium, so that he could fulfill his grandfather’s unfilled dreams. Mannu (Salman Khan) is a happy-go-lucky guy whose main interest lies in bedding women but at the same time, he is blessed with unique ability to create music. Arjun moves to London at a very young age and Mannu passes his time in Punjab.

After Arjun attains success and forms a music group London Dreams(titled aimed at the NRI market, mind you), he comes to Punjab and witnesses Mannu’s mastery over music. He arranges him to come to London and join their group. The group tastes success but there comes a point in time, when Arjun sees that Mannu becomes super-popular with the crowd, and Arjun begins to detest this. He also sees his love Priya(Asin) falling in love with Mannu. Not able to digest this, Arjun then schemes with a confidante group member (Ranvijay) to bring Mannu’s fall-from-grace. Mannu who has decided to reform his womanizing for the sake of Priya, finds himself sinking in a concoction of drugs, and stumbles towards numbness.

Plus points of London Dreams
1. Salman Khan: He is the main point of interest in the film. Salman Khan has been given the best lines in the film and the director makes Salman Khan live up to his signature image and trademark humor, that the crowd loves
2. Excellent characterization of Salman Khan: The director and the script writer Suresh Nair has characterized Salman Khan’s character well, right from the childhood to the end of the move. The same cannot be said about Ajay Devgan’s character though.
3. Opulence: The grandeur of London Dreams is amazing. The Wembley Stadium’s mood and ambience is captured very well

Minus Points of London Dreams
There are many minus points in London Dreams, most of them related to script. Here goes:
1. Ajay Devgan’s characterization: Ajay Devgan’s character is established like that of a goal oriented and jealous person, but the script reduces him to foolish and indecisive especially at the end. He just seeks forgiveness from Salman Khan, as if he is sorry to steal his beer bottle. Instead, given the fact that he deeply relented for the way he destroyed Salman’s career; the scene should have been more emotional from Ajay’s side.

2. Formation of Arjun (Ajay Devgan’s) band: It is stupid about the way his band is formed. He croones at London's Trafalgar Square and suddenly Zohaib(Ranvijay) on the keyboard and Wasim (Aditya Kapoor with an acoustic guitar) join him. By the time, the song is over; a band is formed, voila! And Zohabi and Wasim are happy to announce Arjun as their leader. All in a matter of two minutes.

3. Nothing is shown about how Ajay Devgn becomes a success, the director decided to bypass the struggle phase.

4. Asin’s entry in the group is with the hopeless question"Main kya karun?", to which Ranviay says “Just go with the flow” Asin dances and grooves along with the groove and they manages to impress the judges.

5. What is perhaps the worst part about London Dreams is the last few scenes especially the climax, when Ajay Devgan emotionally bursts at a huge crowd assembled at Wembley. The lines are pretty lame and do not sound convincing. Also, we get the feeling that he gives in too easily. Something doesn’t gel: if the intense and non-compromising Ajay Devgan is so determined about seeing his performance at Wembley to success, why does he just go berserk and bursts when he sees Salman Khan?

6. Ranvijay who seems to be ‘shaana’(secretive) in the group spills the beans to Wasim and says he was the one who gave drugs to Salman Khan. Wasim never threatened him; Ranvijay just says it, why? Was the director ended in just wrapping it up?

7. Bad Music by Shankar Ehsaan Loy: Shankar Ehsaan Loy has disappointed with London Dreams. A musical movie like London Dreams has boring music, what can be more paradoxical? London Dreams is one of Shankar Ehsaan Loy’s worst albums, it may be critically ok, but London Dreams music should have been aimed at the youth and the mass. You cannot take Mozart seriously these days

8. One scene from London Dreams does look controversial, where the little Mannu wears reflectors on his shoes and follows girls so that he could see their undies on them. Such things shouldn’t be encouraged because this concerns the innocence of kids.

Best scenes of London Dreams
Whenever Salman Khan comes in the movie, there is fun and obviously, the best scenes revolved around Salman Khan
1. Salman Khan’s cute double-innuendoes with the airhostess and then with Asin is very funny.
2. Asin’s dance mix of classical and hiphop in the saree, to emphasize on her background, is superb and invites applause from the audience.

Best performances of London Dreams
Salman Khan is the soul of London Dreams. Though he looks disorganized, his style and charisma works to the maximum in the movie. Asin, who is nicknamed ‘Chennai Express’ looks beautiful, and shows promise in every scene. This girl is blessed with loads of talent and she should take more author-based roles to prove mettle. Ajay Devgan is miscast sadly, and though he acts his trademark intensity well in London Dreams, he does not seem cut-out for the role. The same Ajay Devgan who was superb in All the Best, the biggest hit of 2009, has his performance weighed down by lame lines and sad characterization in London Dreams. You cannot fault Ajay Devgan for his performance, but the guy needed better lines, especially at the climax and towards the end.

To sum it up: London Dreams is an average movie made on grand scale. Take Salman Khan out, and the movie is nowhwere.

Radio: Very Good Music by Himesh Reshammiya

Dont know what fate has in store for Radio, but Himesh Reshammiya is definitely back with this pleasant album. The maverick music director whose best work is in slow numbers instead of the boisterous ones, has done a very good job in Radio. We would put Radio in the top three best albums by Himesh till now

Radio is basically a soft album, easy on ears. Mann ka Radio has Himmesh singing in his new found voice, and the bhangra filled 'Zindagi Jaise Radio' is high on rhythm. Jaaneman is arguably, the best song of 2009. A simple, silken, soft number, it is very soothing and made for those candle-lit moments. It is refreshing to hear Himesh subdued and when Shreya Goshal joins him, it is all the more pleasing. 'Piya Jaise Motichur Ladoo" has a classical music feel and by listening to this much, we wonder why did Himesh force people to berate him with repetitive trash over the past few years? 'Teri Meri Dosti ka Aasman' has the opening line similar to one of Shania Twain's popular numbers, but thereafter the song is quite entertaining. It is also pleasing to hear Shreya Goshal miming her voice, to sound that of an adolescent girl. Shaam Ho Chali Hai is another song that demands repetitive hearing. The album closes with yet another interesting and cute song 'Raffa Daffa' sung well by Himesh Reshammiya; this song has a haunting feel that goes in your mind, even after you're done with the album

Bigg Boss Season 3 Review: Bigg Boss 2 was better

Bigg Boss Season 3 review so far has nothing but negative things, the show sadly does not seem to show any spark or sizzle that Bigg Boss 2 had. Blame it on the choice of participants, choice of activities, lousy editing, bad coverage of live night shows; nothing seems to look good. A show is made by its people, and more so for reality shows. Call them scripted or not, but the fact is the deadly trio of Rahul Mahajan, Sambhavna Seth and Raja Choudhary were a class apart and set real high standards for the show, sadly that Bigg Boss Season 3 cannot equate.

The less said about the editing the better. Some scenes seem to be abruptly cut for no reason and some stupid scenes like the cootchie coo romance between Tanaaz and Bakthiyaar have extended coverage.

Poor participation: The choice of participants is not exciting. I am not talking about the eccentric and super-overconfident Kamal Khan; I am talking about people like Shamita Shetty and Sherlyn Chopra who are so insipid. It is possible that the makers of the show thought that Sheryn Chopra being a bold babe with spicy quotes in the media could be dynamite in the house; however she has turned to be a damp squib. She hardly speaks and looks disinterested; ditto for Shamita Shetty who seems to think that playing goody goody will help her win. The same goes for Aditi Govatrikar, Poonam Dhillon and Ismail Dubar. You miss the fiery Sambhavna Seth, the coquettish Payal Rohatgir, the hot-head but humorous Raja Chaudhari, the amazing specimen called Rahul Mahajan, the lovely friendship between Diana Hayden and Ashutosh

2. Poor choice of partcipants: Bigg Boss Season 3 does not have the right mix of participants; there are girls in their 20 (Shamita and Claudia), there are people in their 30s(Bakthiyaar, Tanaaz,Aditi Gowitrikar)and people in their 40s( Kamal Khan, Raju Shrivastav, Ismail Darbar and Poonam Dhillon). A guy in his 20 could have completed the picture well. Since Viacom India could get Ashutosh from Roadies into Colors Bigg Boss 3, it could have definitely roped in someone like Nauman from Bigg Boss 2

3. Poor choice of Activities: Big Boss Season 3 had amazing activities, like skits, role-plays and one of my favorite, participants acting like school children. But so far, the first two weeks activities of Bigg Boss season 3 were very boring. Who cares about a hidden key and singing the Hum Song outside the garden? Wish they were more creative.

4. The Couple thing: Getting the couple Bakthiyaar and Tanaaz was a very stupid thing to do in Bigg Boss Season 3. It is done thing that the two will stand for each other, and there will not be any competition. Secondly, if there is some secret activity not to be shared, the couple will tell each other. Surely Bigg Boss could have got some others

5. Bigg Boss Season 3 Coverage at late nights: The late night coverage of Bigg Boss Season 3 is a big joke. Either the camera man who is covering this is dozing or fingering around with his camera. I was shocked to see the camera abruptly cutting an interesting conversation and then going off tangent to an empty room and covering it for 7 minutes; it may have been more; I had shut my TV off by then.

HOWEVER WE CAN BE SURE THAT THERE WILL BE MAJOR CHANGES DONE BY THE PRODUCERS, SOME SITUATIONS PUT IN, SOME CHANGES IN THE SCRIPT DONE AND MAY BE SOME NEW LOONY CHARACTERS INTRODUCED, INCLUDING WILD CARD ENTRY TO KRK, IF HE IS REMOVED

Blue Movie Review: Blue runs in Still Waters

Blue, probably the most expensive movie in Bollywood has one major leakage: good script. The producer has spent mega bucks in rich visual appeal and thrilling water stunts, but sadly, the 100 crore movie looks like just another imitation of a B-grade Hollywood action flick. Blame it on the slow pace and weak script.

Story: Aarav( Akshay Kumar) is a shipping magnate who is living a debonair lifestyle in the Bahamas. Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) is a person who works for him and Mona (Lara Dutta) is Sagar’s lover interest. Sam(Zayed Khan) is Sagar’s brother who lives on the fast lane, speeding bikes at break neck speed for time-pass. One such race contest that Sagar has with a powerful criminal (Rahul Dev), puts his life in jeopardy. Though Sagar wins the race and the interest of Katrina Kaif (special appearance), his life is in mess after he volunteers to work for an assignment for Rahul Dev. But Sagar goofs up and Rahul is after his blood and money (read 50 million dollars). The only way out is for big brother Sagar (Sanjay Dutt) to navigate into deep seas and find treasures that are worth 50 million dollars from a ship called ‘Lady in Blue’. Aarav and Sam boosts Sagar’s drive to go into the deep and get the treasure; they also accompany him. Somwhere in between, we come to know why Sagar was apprehensive about going to sunken ship for so long. There is a twist a la Race in the end, which makes the whole deal a little bit watchable.

Minus points of Blue: While Blue's competitor All the Best had some very good, witty lines, Blue has perhaps the most mundane and boring lines in films of this caliber. There are quite a few ‘what is that?’ scenes. How can Lara Dutta say “ stop it, stop it, everything can be resolved by talking “ when there is cross-fire happening from all sides in the room.? A bigger thing is why Sanjay Dutt keep this tragic secret buried for so long within his heart, when it wouldn’t have really mattered, if he has said it! A R Rahman shockingly disappoints this time with a not so impressive score, save for ‘Fiqraana track’ . The less said about the background score the better!

Plus points: We can credit director Anthony D’Souza for coming up with Bollywood’s first under-water film. The underwater scenes are spectacular, the bike chase scene is very good and the Hollywood stunt director James Bomalick, who has directed these stunts, has done a neat job. Akshay Kumar is the star of Blue, he looks physically fit (as usual) and we can see his commitment and dedication at giving his best shot for Blue especially in the action scenes. The short tight length of Blue, 1 hour and 57 minutes is a another good point especially since the movie is for the action genre, but it would have been better, if the first half had some quick editing. The drop dead Bahamas location makes Blue worth a watch.

Performances and star presence in Blue: Akshay Kumar is the reason to watch Blue, and if you are looking for sex appeal of the female variety, Lara Dutta has the goods. With a toned body, striking screen presence, Lara Dutta, our desi Megan Fox, looks dazzling and manages to outshine Kylie Minogue in Cheegi Weegi situation. Sanjay Dutt is out of shape and the abdominal fat doesn’t really help. He sleepwalks through the role and gets to mouth some really boring dialogues. Zayed Khan should stop talking like a sixth standard child and as for expressions, he is saved this time, because most of the time, his head is hidden under the motorbike helmet.

Last few lines about Blue: It is better to go for a 40 lakh movie with a good script rather than a 100 crore movie with none. Somehow while watching Blue, you get the feeling that you are watching an extended National Geographic or Discovery Channel footage.

All the Best Movie Review: All the Best is the perfect Diwali Gift

All The Best is the perfect Diwali gift, a fun ride in every sense of the word. It is the best example of clean, slapstick comedy in recent times. Director Rohit Shetty and producer Ajay Devgan hit it very well, this time too, with an ensemble cast, funny sidekicks, comedy of errors and the cleverly picturized songs. Before writing the All the Best Movie Review, I would like to tell that personally, I was not in the best frame of mind before watching the movie. However, the film sent me home, happy and laughing. All the Best is a mood changer for sure.

Story: As expected, like the previous genre of successful comedy of errors movies like New Entry, Golmaal Returns or even Hera Pheri, All the Best is all about one person getting it all wrong. Veer(Fardeen Khan) is a struggling musician earning off the lavish pocket money sent by his rich step brother Dharam(Sanjay Dutt). Veer lies to his brother that he has married his girlfriend Vidya, which delights Dharam, who sends him double the money, so that the couple can live happily.

Veer and his friend Prem(Ajay Devgan) dream of fast money, especially Ajay whose wife Jhanvi(Bipasha Basu) runs a second-hand gym that is left behind by Prem’s father. Trouble crops up when Dharam pays Veer a visit and mistakes Jhanvi to be Veer’s wife and Vidya to be Prem’s love. There are many funny scenes especially between Ajay Devgan and Sanjay Dutt. Add to this are sub plots of a gangster called Tobu(Johnny Lever) who uses a glass to communicate with people, to whom Veer and Prem owe money. There is also a man called RGV Sanjay Mishra), who's been given Dharam's bungalow on rent in his absence. The gags and funny situations arise out of mistaken identities and perceptions of Dharam.

Plus points of All the Best: The witty dialogues of All the Best is its USP. After a long time, we are watching such quick-fire wit and play of words courtesy writers Sajid-Farhad and Bunty Rathore. Some of the funniest lines include : Phd: Phata Hua Dhol, MBA: Maha Bekaar Aadmi, and Sanjay Dutt’s killer line “Comedy toh ab shuri ki, action toh 30 saal se kar raha hoon” There are funny characterizations to people like Johnny Lever, who speaks by tinkling a glass with a spoon, Sanjay Mishra who speaks Pran style, while the maid Ashwini Kalsekar speaks in a mall twang. Also it is refreshing and pleasing to see producer Ajay Devgan who has looked his best in this film, giving the meatier role to Sanjay Dutt, who relishes it with elan. Above all, full credit to director Rohit Shetty, who is getting better with every film. This man has certainly mastered the art of clean, wholesome but slapstick entertainers, which is not an easy job to do.

Performances: Sanjay Dutt is bang on as the role of a businessman who is at the wrong side of judgement. Bipasha Basu looks hot and acts her part well. Mughda Godse is reduced to an embellishment but people like Johnny Lever and Sanjay Mishra raise the bar of the film. The best thing about All the Best is Ajay Devgan, who has performed brilliantly in this comic caper. Plus he looks super fit and has muscles to boot. Dunno why Ajay Devgan didn't chose to market his beefy look in various promos of All the Best

Last few lines about All the Best: All the Best is sure to grab all the best share of eyeballs with the kind of stuff it has. Surely, a recommended watch for this festive season.
