Comedy preferred theme in Bollywood

Call it inflation blues, emotional setbacks and other stresses of our lives, comedy and romantic comedies are two of the most successful Bollywood genre. Check out the top successful Bollywood films of 2009 to know how comedy is ruling Bollywood:
1. Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (comedy and romantic comedy)
2. All the Best(comedy)
3. De Dana Dan (comedy)
4. Love Aaj Kal (Romantic Comedy)
5. 3 Idiots(Comedy)
5. Kambakkht Ishq(comedy)

Wanted was also more of a masala movie leaning towards action.

Movies on serious topics which had less than one per cent humor were rejected like Jail, Delhi 6 and Kurbaan, even though they were decently made. New York's romantic track with the terrorist backdrop worked but in the case of Kurbaan, it was terrorism on the background with the romance relegated to the background, at least that is what people thought.

Movie in Theater or Satellite TV?

Should I watch a movie in multiplex or watch it on TV in two weeks? They are showing movies on TV within a month or even within weeks of a release in the theater. So is it worth going to the multiplex?

Main aur Mrs. Khanna was released in DTH(direct to home) less than a week after its release, causing tension, as a lot of exhibitors threatened to pull the film out of movie theaters in protest
You will not find slogans and stars clamoring to say “Please watch it on big screen only” because YOU CAN WAIT if you want to. In four-five weeks, you will be able to watch the movie in your television. Not a bad idea, saving 300 bucks in a multiplex and blowing another 100 in snacks. Imagine if a family of four goes, you are bankrupt by a cool Rs. 1600 bucks. Imagine the fate if the movie sucks! Now you can save that Rs. 1400 and watch the film in your home television or even in YouTube like 3 Idiots is reported to do.

You are already seeing it happening:
1. The most hyped movie of 2009, Blue became a noteworthy flop, and found its way in Colors Channels barely a month after its theatrical release.
2. Ashutosh Gowariker’s What Your Rashee and Karan Johar’s Wake Up Sid was aired on cable legally weeks after its release
3. Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani, which is one of the biggest hits of 2009, surprisingly to some, premiered on Colors Channel on 27th December 2009.

Paa and De Dana Dan’s satellite rights have also been taken by satellite channel and you may be getting the good news soon.

It is understandable if new movies that are flops are aired on television, but why are the hit movies being aired so soon? Not that viewers are complaining but for distributor’s sake, why so soon? Here are the reasons:

1. Shelf Life: Only three movies have had a miraculously long shelf life in this decade: Mahesh Bhatt’s Murder(2004), Rajkumar Hirani’s Lagey Raho Munnabhai (2006) and Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par(2007). But with video sharing, torrent downloads, piracy, mobile videos improving by leaps and bounds, it is difficult to have even the world’s greatest movie run for three months now. People now wish to see a movie on the big screen only if it is a technological marvel. Since the shelf life of films are getting shorter with every passing month, producers are looking for optimizing revenue in the shortest period possible

2. High cost of movie production: Though Blue had a stupendous opening, it flopped not entirely because of content but because of high cost. The producers found it tough to recover the cost involved in making and marketing it. So logically, they decided to premiere the film on television to minimize their losses.

3. Coming to the point why the hit Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahan released so quickly in spite of running in theaters for quite some, the producer is aiming television for revenue optimization. Says Ramesh Taurani, producer of Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani,”” Eighty per cent of the revenue you earn is in the first week , and only 20 per cent comes from the full run. Besides my film is being screened in only three cinema halls across the city.” He adds ,” The same revenue that you erned over 25 weeks in ealier years is now obtained in jut four days, thanks to the prints multiplying manifold” In a nutshell, theater revenue earned, it really does not matter if films are out on other platforms in a short time”

4. Releasing films on satellite television has added to distributor’s woes because distributors can no longer afford to buy exorbitantly priced films on an outright basis. These days movies are released by producers themselves. Big companies like Reliance Big Cinema and Tips are into both production and distribution

5. Look at the options that producers have to capitalize and optimize their revenue: home video, cable video or DTH, video on demand, video sharing(You Tube), online premiere, web cast, pay per view, mobile download and IPTV. The DTH market is all set to double within a couple of years. You can watch high quality prints without ad breaks. With the advent of 3 G and increased speeds of broadband, there will be tough competition in the information superhighway. With superior bandwidth and high speed, you will be able to see moves online without streaming problems.

Theater owners are not exactly happy with the turn of events and think that producers are only ‘killing’ their revenues by abandoning theaters. A COO of a prominent multiplex says , “ What one earns from cinema houses is three times more of what one gets through DTH. Besides the shelf life of good quality films will always be long.”

The day is not far away when movies may be released simultaneously across all platforms.

Paul Scrhader, Hollywood writer-director who wrote Taxi Driver and Raging Bull told Times of India, “These are not good days for global cinema or Bollywood. With alternative media emerging to watch cinema and theater prices going high, a permanent change will soon happen. I don’t know what form or shape it will take, but things certainly wont go abck to being normal. I bileve that like novels, even the movie business is going to be a 20th century phenomenon.”

Aishwarya Rai is the most popular face of Indian cinema. With internationally acclaimed movies like Bride and Prejudice, The Last Legion, The Mistress of Spice and Pink Panther 2, she has really gone international. Vindu Bigg Boss 3 Winner

Vindu is the winner of Bigg Boss Season 3, according to what most people are saying. He had a tough competitor in Pravesh Rana, who lost Bigg Boss, pretty much when he threw all the food provisions in the pool, that really pulled him down the eyes of the common man, that he used to parrot about.

Vindu Dara Singh was nominated 6 times in Bigg Boss and each time, he kept on getting better with the game. Though aggressive in the first few episodes, manipulative in the middle, and mellowing down at the last phase, people got to see the best of Vindu's nature when he appeared to be forgiving and polite with everyone.

Vindu's association with Poonam rubbed on him and the desh ka aadmi has won the hearts of most people in one way or the other. Poonam Dhillon, also a Big Boss winner potentially is the dark horse of Bigg Boss Season 3 has also played the game very well, maintained a natural calm throughout the game. 3 Idiots on You Tube

3 Idiots will be on You Tube officially, eight to ten weeks after release in theaters. Read the 3 Idiots Movie Review here. The producer of 3 Idiots, Vidhu Vinod Chopra and Aamir Khan seem to believe in the adage 'if you cannot fight them, join them'. It is believed that the producers of 3 Idiots have stuck a deal with You Tube, the biggest video sharing portal in the world, for an undisclosed sum

Releasing 3 Idiots legally on You Tube is supposed to be a move in countering piracy. The deal with Youtube will allow viewers to download 3 Idiots from the website at a fixed price. India, incidentally ranks eighth among countries with highest figure of online piracy. But putting a price for viewers to download the film and watch may be a tough thing to do, especially when people use multiple user names and release such movies for free on You Tube and other video sharing portals.

Top Reality Shows India 2009

Which has been the best TV reality show of 2009? Let us find out which reality show in India really came tops:

1. MTV Roadies: MTV Roadies 2009 began and created household names out of people like Tamanna, Palak, Natasha, Dev, Roop Bhinder, Bobby Chopra, Natasha, Sufi Malhotra, Kiri and the winner Nauman Sait. MTV Roadies 6.0 was the most successful season of Roadies. and the show culminated with the fabulous finale where Naumait Sait defeated Kiri to become the winner

Controversies of MTV Roadies 6.0 2009: MTV Roadies turned controversial when Palak alleged after the show that she was asked to mouth bad words to fellow contestants. Tamanna's MMS clip that floated around and was covered by a famous tabloid in Mumbai and Sufi Malhotra's allegation that he was not given insurance for his limp leg that he hurt in one of the tasks in Australia were the downers for MTV Roadies 6.0

2. Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao: Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao had a very successful first season and provided full-on entertainment. The game show Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao was the most popular show of Sony Entertainment Channel in 2009. The highpoints of Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao were the dangerous tasks, Akash Sehgal's outbursts, the eye-candy bikini show by Shweta Tiwari, Nigar Khan and Kashmira Shah. Easily, the sexiest show on Indian television in 2009, Shweta Tiwari's cleavage show where more than needed was accidentally(?) revealed ended up being one of the most downloaded clips on YouTube in India. Mona Vasu was the winner of Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao in 2009

Controversies of Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao: Vegetarians and animal lovers rejected the show outright. Also eating a dead roasted rat(which Mona Vasu did) and eating a goat's penis (which Chetan Hansraj did) is not everyone's idea of entertainment.

3. Sacch Ka Saamna: Saach Ka Saamna was the most controversial game show on Indian television in 2009. Host Rajeev Khandelwal made a lot of participants uncomfortable by asking them personal questions, some of them too private to be shared. Celebrites like Urvashi Dholakia, Vinod Kambli, Bobby Darling also came to the show and revealed scandalous truths. The last episode featured Rupali Ganguly, a TV and film celebrity who revealed about casting couch in Bollywood. No one was able to take the big prize money.

Controversies of Sach Ka Saamna: The show was deemed as an intrusion of people's privacy. Though it had TRPs, it was finally pulled off the air.

Rakhi Ka Swayamavar: Rakhi Sawant shocked everyone with her program 'Rakhi Ka Swayamvar' . Elesh Parujanwala became her fiance, but the item girl failed to sustain her engagement with her fiance Elesh. The show generated the highest TRPs for the channel NDTV Imagine.

Controversies of Rakhi Ka Swayamvar: Rakhi Sawant's mom Jaya Sawant complained that her daughter didnt invite her to the finale. And with Rakhi Sawant, the controversy queen of Bollywood having a show of her own, there has to be enough of it.

Dus Ka Dum: Dus Ka Dum rocked as a fantastic show hosted by Salman Khan. Sony TV's second most popular show after Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao, Dus Ka Dum rocked with Salman Khan playing the game mostly with celebrites. Everyone from Sanjay Dutt to Mallika Sherawat came to the show, mostly from the point of promoting their films. Of course, Sallu's problem people Vivek Oberoi, John Abraham and Shahrukh Khan werent there

Controversies of Dus Ka Dum: John Abraham was reportedly upset beause Neil Nitin Mukesh didnt mention his name when he and Katrina Kaif had gone to promote New York in one of the episodes.

Khatron Ke Khiladi Level 2: Khatron Ke Khiladi Level 2 didnt match up to the popularity of Level 1, but the dare devil stunts were more or less interesting. This is usually a controversy-free show and the show went smoothly.

Bigg Boss Season 3: The biggest reality show of India, Bigg Boss is still underway at this point of time. Bigg Boss of Bollywood, Amitabh Bachchan hosted Bigg Boss Season 3. Though not as interesting as Bigg Boss Season 2 and Season 1, this show still had its share of controversies.

Controversies of Bigg Boss 3: Kamal Khan throwing a bottle at Rohit Verma, Rohit Verma in the cage, Vindu's fight with Pravesh, Vindu's argument with Bakhtiyaar, Raju Shrivastav nearly coming to blows with an abusive KRK, Kamal Khan's sober behavior in the wild-card entry, Bigg Boss video showing the planning and plotting of nominations and Bakhtiyar leaving the show with Rs. 10 lakhs

3 Idiots Movie Review: 3 Idiots Aamir Khan's best performance

3 Idiots is a must watch. The movie that was the most awaited flick of the year has lived up to the expectation. There has been tremendous amount of expectation on 3 Idiots with some of the following reasons building the movie to be the biggest hyped one in Bollywood in 2009

  • 3 Idiots has the Aamir Khan-Sharman Joshi –Madhavan team of Rang De Basanti(2009) joining hands with director Raj Kumar Hirani who directed the very popular Lagey Raho Munnabhai (2006)
  • It is Raj Kumar Hirani’s chance to do a hat-trick with two blockbusters Munnabhai MBBS and Lagey Raho Munnabhai.
  • It is an Aamir Khan. This alone is a crowd pulling statement. And with Ghajini among the top 5 biggest money-makers of Bollywood, 3 Idiots deserved to be super-hyped. So does it work?
Lets find out from the 3 Idiot Review:
Story of 3 Idiots: 3 Idiots is about three engineering students who believe in the IDIOT term, which means I Do It On My Terms. Two friends [R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi] are on a trip to find out a lost buddy.. As they make their way through the dangerous landscape [Shimla, Manali, Ladakh], there starts another journey: their inner journey through memory lane and the story of their buddy in the flashback - the unmanageable free-thinker Rancho [Aamir Khan], who, in his exceptional way, touched and changed their lives.

It's a story of their hostel days that swings between Rancho's romance with the spirited Pia [Kareena Kapoor] and his clash with and oppressive mentor, Viru Sahastrabudhhe [Boman Irani]. And then one day, suddenly, Rancho disappears from their lives. The quest is to find the original idiot who did not conform to standard thinking patterns.

How does Raju Hirani score? Raju Hirani has proved that he is the best director in Bollywood with 3 Idiots. The screenplay writers Abhijat Joshi and Hirani come up with a very sincere story that is a slice of life

Best scenes in 3 Idiots:
1. The ragging sequence at the beginning of the film
2. The three getting trapped in an embarrassing situation at the reception of Kareena Kapoor’s sister Mona Singh
3. The dinner scene at Shaman Joshi’s house
4. Kareena Kapoor and Aamir Khan driving Sharman Joshi’s seriously sick father on their bike to the hospital
5. Omi’s speech which stars from ‘chamaatkar’ and ends at ‘balaatkar’
6. The interesting point at tthe interval with a promise of a twist. There is a new story that unfolds in a logically flow from the first one post interval
7. The sequence where the baby boy is born
8. The sequence between Aamir Khan and Boman Irani
9. The climax of the film, which is deftly written.

Technical details of 3 Idiots:
1. Shantanu Moitra’s music may look a bit staid compared to most songs in Aamir Khan’s films but when you see them on screen, you begin to fall in love with them
2. The choreography of 'All Izz Well' [Avit Dias] and 'Zoobie Doobie' [Bosco-Caesar] is pleasant.. The background score [Sanjay Wandrekar, Atul Raninga, Shantanu Moitra] is apt
3. Muraleedharan C.K.'s cinematography is stunning, the scenes of Shimla and Ladakh are perfectly captured

Performance in 3 idiots
3 Idiots is beautified with some towering performances. Sharman Joshi is super brilliant, Madhavan really keeps you on your toes especially in sequences when he explains to his father, his point of view Boman Irani is wonderful as the head of the engineering institute. Boman Irani comes up with a performance that is on par with his scintiallating performance as Asthana in Munnabhai MBBS. Kareena Kapoor’s role is small but she gives maximum impact. Omi is sure to be a hit with audience. Jaffed Jafferi and Pareekshit Sahani put in noteworthy performances. Finally, we have the icing on this sweet cake-Aamir Khan. He may have come up with brilliant performances through his career, but Aamir Khan’s performance in 3 Idiots is the best. He breathes, looks and performs like a 25 year old. He proves that no one is close to him when it comes to pitching in a mindblowing performance.

Last few lines on 3 Idiots
3 Idiots works and how! With a good grip on emotions and entertainment, 3 Idiots is the biggest hit of 2009 for sure. Take it from us.

2. What's Your Rashee: Priyanka Chopra's 'Horror'scope movie What's Your Rashee had an overdose of Priyanka Chopra and people had a headache by the time, they were through with the film
Probable reason for What's Your Rashee to flop: Slow pace, long movie, outdated theme, overdose of Priyanka Chopra

1. Chandni Chowk to China: The trusted director for flop movies, Nikhil Advani did it again this time with Chandni Chowk to China. He dint seem to learn from Saalam-e-Ishq which was 2007's biggest flop. Akshay Kumar's golden run in 2008 at the box office stopped with this film.

Probable reason for Chandni Chowk to China to flop:A stupid plot, bad performances, slow pace and pathetic humor were the low points of this film

Rocket Singh Review, Best Script of 2009

Shimit Amin’s Rocketsingh: Sales of the Year has got to be one of the most refreshing films in the last two years. Jaideep Sahni, one of the best script writers comes up with a very realistic and contemporary story that finds echo with the working class. Somehow, this script writer has always manages to hold the mirror to Bollywood and show reality in a better escape from those artificial candy floss romances and make believed comedies. Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year salutes entepreneurship that is a dream of the youth in India.

Story of Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year:
Harpeet Singh Bedi, a lanky Sardar dreams of taking up selling as a profession much to the amazement of his friends. He does not believe in MBA and other razzmatazz, he believes in playing the field. As he says “numbers kam hain, dimaag nahin” Armed with enthusiasm as his weapon, he joins AIS company which sells assembled computers. However, he comes to know that there are dirty games to play in this field, especially when he has to bribe rich clients. He refuses to do so and is admonished by his superior Puri(Manish Choudhary)
Soon, he is asked to not do any field sales but do them from his work station. Other workers are angry at him because he has doubled their sales targets. In this thankless place, where all he gets are taunts and scorns, Harpeet Singh gets a private contract for graphic cards from Sherena(Shazahn Padamsee). He accepts and buys them for discount from a salesman at Lamington(popular computer lane in Mumbai where you get computer parts at discounts). Thus strikes a brainwave in him to start his own business called RocketSales Corp. He wins the confidence of a few trusted friends in the office and starts a fly-by-night operation of selling and servicing computers from the office itself! Soon, RocketSales Corp becomes a huge force to reckon with and rivals AYS too. But RocketSales do not get far and their ‘johl’ is found out. Watch the movie to know what happens next
Plus points of Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year:
1. An awesome script that will connect with many people who work and dream of having their own business
2. Good performance by the entire cast
Minus points
1. The first half goes at a turtle’s pace and we wish some scenes were removed from the film like Ranbir Kapoor practicising in the mirror, or him massaging his grand father Prem Chopra’ shoulders
2. Weak romance
3. The change of heart in the end is not so convincing.

Best scenes of Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year:
1. Ranbir Kapoor and Puri speaking to each other on the phone in the same office
2. The terrace scenes where the foursome brainstorm for ideas

Best performances in Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year
By now it is visible that Ranbir Kapoor has a midas touch and seems to know what will work and what will not in Bollywood. He pitches in an understated performance and does very well. The ensemble cast is brilliant particularly, D Santosh as Giri, a computer assembler who watches sleazy movies at night and sleeps in the office, in the morning; Naveen Kaushik as the sales shark, Mukesh Bhatt as the enterprising people and Gauhar Khan as the ambitious receptionist. Shazahn company has not much to do ; in fact people will remember her legs more than her expressions in the film.

Last lines on Rocket Singh:Salesman of the Year:
Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year is among the best movies of 2009. It has the one of the best script seen in the past few years. If the movie had a tighter first half, it would have been perfect. Still, it is a sincere attempt and Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year will be relished by people who love intelligent cinema.

Paa Movie Review: Paa The Film Rocks

Paa has lived to its hype and is proving to be a quality film in every manner. Paa, the movie on Progeria, is the first movie to be made in the world, about this rare genetic disease. It is also the first movie in the world, to have a father-son role reversal. If you think reading Paa movie review, you will get information on the disease, be rest assured that this movie is about human emotions with Progeria being a backdrop. Amitabh Bachchan has given a mind blowing performance in Paa, as expected, and this one is sure to be among his top 3 career-best performance in his long chequered career.

Story of Paa: When little Auro is born, his parents live separate lives. Vidya Balan who plays mother to Auro brings the child all on her own because Amol (Abhishek Bachchan) wanted to have the child aborted. But Auro grows up to be a son with great talent. Sadly, he is suffering from an extremely rare genetic disorder, Progeria. Amol is united with his son for the son, at a school function when he rewards the child for artistic excellence. Thus begins a witty, touching and beautiful love story of relationships and family.

Technical aspects of Paa: Director and writer R.Balki should be congratulated for making a humorous and touching story, without harping on melodrama. He has done sufficient research on Progeria, and though the movie is more on human relationships rather than the disease, his efforts show. There are some real cute and witty lines in the movie. The prosthetic makeup done by Christien Tinsley(The Passion of Christ fame)and Dominie Till is sure to win a lot of awards. Editing of Paa is laudable as Anil Naidu proves that he is adept at his art. PC Sreedharan’s cinematography is brilliant takes the movie to another level altogether.

Best scenes of Paa: The climax of Paa is sure to leave you open mouthed and reaching out for the kerchief.

Best Performance in Paa: Like we said, Amitabh Bachchan is sure to win loads of awards and congratulations for his brilliant performance in Paa. This is really a debut film of Amitabh Bachchan where he leaves his baritone, body language and charisma behind and slips convincingly in a role that is definitely no child’s play. Vidya Balan gives a sincere performance and she is top-notch with her expressive eyes. Abhishekh Bachchan has done a good job as well. Arundhati Nag as the grandmother is praiseworthy and so is Pratik Katare, the classmate of Auro who gets some witty lines in the film. Paresh Rawal, in a special appearance is much better here than his hammy acts like he did De Dhana Dan..

To sum on Paa: Paa is a must watch movie. Please watch it with your entire family.

Kurbaan Flop: Case Study

Critics and a major section of masses who went to see Kurbaan loved the movie and appreciated it. Yet, Kurbaan has been certified a flop. Why? What went wrong with a film that is called the best Indian movie on international terrorism.

There were errors, alright in Kurbaan, some of which are mentioned in Kurbaan movie review. However, what really did the movie in were three glaring points:
1. Marketing of the film: Unlike New York which was packaged as a love story of people with a terror backdrop, this one looked like a serious film, which made people stay away from.
2. Kareena Kapoor’s indirect statement: There were reports in the newspapers that the love making scenes in Kurbaan were embarrassing for Kareena Kapoor to see it with her mother. the main lead actress has apprehensions about certain scenes in the film, commoners who were adults also felt that the scenes were too explicit to be seen.
3. Absence of humor: There was not a single humorous or witty line in the film. Movies like Satya which were also ‘serious violent’ films had humor in them

Despite all of the above misconceptions that people had of Kurbaan, let us hope that people appreciate good cinema and understand that Kurbaan is one of the most sincere efforts in recent times
