Right Yaaa Wrong directed by Neeraj Pathak and produced under Subash Ghai’s Mukta Arts banner, is a predictable thriller. A rather subdued version of a typical Abbas Mustan movie, minus the chic, bling and gloss, Right Yaaa Wrong has a lack-luster treatment. Sparing a few thrills, the movie is flat and could have been better with some more punch in the script. Incidentally Right Yaa Wrong is a copy of 1995 TV movie, 'Above Suspicion' starring Christopher Reeve and Willaim H Macy. You can add Right Yaaa Wrong to list of Bollywood plagiarised movies.
Story of Right Yaaa Wrong: The movie starts with a crisply shot action scene where we see cops Sunny Deol, Irrfan Khan, Deepal Shaw busting a criminal gang. The director Neeraj Pathak is clever enough to show you the qualities of the two police officers Ajay Shridhar(Sunny Deol) and , Vinay Patnaik( Irrfan Khan) from the first few reels itself. It becomes clear that Ajay is someone who is sensitive and likes to give people a second chance while Vinay is someone who is practical in his disposition and may not spare anyone who breaks the law.
Now Ajay is married to a woman called Anshita(Eesha Koppikar); they have a kid as well. However Anshita is actually dousing her libidinous desires with Ajay’s cousin brother and the cop(Ajay) is blissfully unaware of all this. There comes a time when there is a criminal encounter and Ajay is paralyzed from his waist down, rendering him incapacitated to move and as some of you may think, to even fornicate. Drowned in despair, he urges his wife and cousin brother to kill him so that the two can stake claim on the insurance. The greed for the money and the chances of spending their time in each others’s arms make Anshita and Ajay’s brother agree. Ajay actually tells them of a fool-proof plan to kill him with alibi and all, but when the time comes for Ajay to be shot, he shoots them both dead.
The police department and media believe Ajay when he says that he killed them in self defense but Vinay(Irrfan Khan) suspects something amiss. He is hell-bent on proving that the murder was preplanned but the law does not buy. So what will he do?
Plus points of Right Yaaaa Wrong
The narrative has a smooth flow and by the second half, the movie does carry some substance. The most interesting thing In the movie is Eesha Koppikar’s bold character. She is shown to indulge in pleasure and there is no ‘filmi’ explanation given for why she does it. The editing is crisp as well and does its best to hide the loopholes in the script
Minus points of Right Yaaa Wrong
There are glaring minuses in Right Yaaa Wrong. For instance, it seems far-fetched that Anshita and her lover would actually not smell a rat when Ajay tells them to kill him. There is just a momentary hesitation and then they agree; something that does not really seem natural in the plot.
Eesha is dressed in a rather fancy manner for a middle class policewoman’s wife.
The court scenes are filmi and thing like the judge screaming to people to maintain decorum is cliché now. Things like the ‘lie detector test’ was not needed and we see that the judge gives her decision based on factors that the lie detector test, which is not really a ‘legal evidence’ for judicial decisions.
The scenes like lawyer Konkana Sen’s resolve to fight for Sunny Deol’s sake does not really look convincing.
The film is low on entertainment because there are not many good scenes between Sunny Deol and Irrfan Khan
Best scene in Right Yaa Wrong
The scene where Sunny Deol proves to Irrfan Khan that he hit a dolphin stone at Eesha Koppiar at a 180 degree angle, on a wheel-chair is good
Performances in Right Yaaa Wrong
Konkana Sen does not have much to do but gives an understated performance.Eesha Koppikar’s role of an adulterous woman is bold and the woman really gives her best shot. Check out her wicked smile when she gets to know that there is a way for them to have a kill and get on with the booty. Sunny Deol looks old but it is to his credit that he has given a restrained performance without mouthing glass-shattering dialogues. Irrfan Khan is the scene stealer in the film who really goes after the film hammer and tongs and pitches in a brilliant performance
Conclusion
It would have been better if the movie was a suspense rather than a thriller. Secondly, it is way notched below an Abbas Mustan movie if you are expecting something like that. But yes, you can go watch the film if you are in mood for thrills. Or else stay home and watch CID series.
