Abhishek Bachchan has made it clear through his Twitter Message that he is not going to attend Filmfare Awards. He has directed the ire towards Mumbai Mirror who had carried a 'false report' that his wife Aishwarya Rai is not able to conceive due to stomach tuberculosis

Karthik Calling Karthik Movie Review: Call Ho Na Ho!!

Karthik Calling Karthik does to the phone what 13 B did to the TV. Director Vijay Lalwani has compartmentalized Karthik Calling Karthik into a romantic thriller-first part being romantic and the second half thriller. The movie is good no doubt, but it could have still done be better.

Story of Karthik Calling Karthik: Karthik (Farhan Akhtar) is an emotionally disturbed person, weighed down heavily by the notion that he was responsible for having his brother killed when they were school going kids.

As an adult, he is not able to do a single thing right. Karthik invites the scorn of his boss, the contempt of his colleagues, cannot sleep properly and suffers from a very low self-esteem. He has a crush for Shonali, his office colleagues who hardly notices him. One day at his home, he breaks his phone in despair and then gets another one. The same night he decides to kill himself, when he gets a phone call from the phone. It is Karthik calling Karthik. The voice on the other end who identifies himself as Karthik tell him that he will help him get over his lack of confidence. The next day, there is a massive transformation in Karthik’s life as he gains the ability to say ‘no’ and speak up his mind to his boss (Ram Kapoor). He also manages to serenade and charm Shona who falls In love with him.

The caller warns Karthik not to disclose his presence in his life to other people but Karthik(Farhan) does mention in to Shonali(Deepika Padukone) who recommends him to a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist who comes to Karthik’s home thinking that he is just schizophrenic gets a fright of her life when the phone actually rings and the caller on the other end identifies himself as Karthik. Shona tells him to stop entertaining his calls. The caller is irritated and tells Karthik that he is going to make his miserable for telling about him to others.

Technical details: Karthik Calling Karthik is inspired by Shatterday, the first segment of the New Twilight Zone series, starring Bruce Willis. (Find out the list of Bollywood plagiarized films). It is in the league of TV series like Mirror Image, Nervous Man in a Four Dollar Room and the book The Strange Case of Mr. Pelham. Full credit to Director Vijay Lalwani to have come up with an interesting script that may be relatively new to Bollywood. Cinematography by Sanu Varghese
(the Khandala locale), Aarti Bajaj's editing and Baylon Fonseca's sound are good. Javed Akhtar comes up with some cute lines and the music by Shankar Mahadevan is melodious. They seem to have found their groove back with good music in My Name is Khan and Karthik Calling Karthik

Minus Points of Karthik Calling Karthik
1. Thoguh the place of the film is good on both the halves, the second half gets marred by unnecessary songs
2. The climax is tame and instead of a thrilling finale that we saw in a movie like 13B for instance, this once has a third person unveiling the suspense and the impact just goes away
3. Deepika Padukone’s character is not well defined. Though she is aware of the case and problem of her boyfriend Karthik, then how does she yell at him for calling her slut and prostitute. She definitely could have hazarded a guess that it is not her Karthik.

1. The romantically touching scene where Karthik tells Shonali about how he had put more than 1000 mails in draft, without even sending them to her
2. The scene in which Shonali is shit scared, but she tells Karthik to relax.. Thrilling and funny at the same time.

Performances in Karthik Calling Karthik
Farhan Akhtar performs wonderfully in the movie and he does complete justice to the confused soul of his character. Deepika Padukone finally seems to have improved. When she had once said that people had taken seriously as an actress in Love Aaj Kal, we couldn’t stop laughing but in KCH, she does show a lot of improvement. Deepika looks very endearing, not super-gorgerous but very much a today’s girl that you can relate easily to. Ram Kapoor and Shefali Shah are okay.

2. Kareena walking out of her marriage for the second time. Haven't we seen like this before? That is a pure filmy scene

3. The clash of view points between Aamir Khan and Boman Irani has been seen in the Munnabhai franchise between Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani

4. Things like 'follow your dreams' are things that we already know. What is so great in it?

5. Frequent dropping of pants, pissing and farting-3 Idiots is toilet humor at its worst. If this film had a Govinda or Akshay Kumar in it with David Dhawan or Priyadarshan directing, we would have critics and people smirking.

6. The Javed Jaffery twist at the interval, was that even needed?

7. Sharman Joshi's mom in the movie is bothered about Maruti Car as dowry. That is taken from 5 Point Someone point-blank. You could have at least said a better thing, Maruti Car is so very 90s!

A lot of people feel that the hurricane scene in My Name is Khan was not necessary. They ask what was the US government doing, why did they need Mr. Khan to save the town? But we need to know that the movie had to bring out the humane side in Khan. Rizvan Khan does not go to save Georgia, he remembers that two of his friends Mama Jenny and her son Funny Hair Joel are stuck there, so he makes it a point to rescue them. Wouldn't we do it if we were in Rizvan's place? He ends up helping other people who had taken shelter in the church. So we wouldn't really call it an exaggerated scene, at least it doesnt look too filmy as some of the 3 Idiots scenes mentioned up there

Just when 3 Idiots was supposed to be the biggest hit ever, Shahrukh Khan's My Name is Khan has broken world records for a Bollywood film. It has bettered all previous international box office records to record the highest-ever single opening day collections for a Hindi film.

Despite having a restricted release in Maharashtra, Gujarat and parts of Madhya Pradesh on Friday, MNIK's worldwide box office collections are estimated at Rs. 25 crores for Friday! This is the highest ever collections for a non-holiday Friday in Bollywood history. Trade analysts estimate that it could have easily earned an additional 5-6 crores if it had been released normally across India. With the film playing everywhere across the country from Saturday onwards and given the strong buzz, this number is only expected to grow. it is a matter of time before My Name is Khan becomes a huge box office history, surpassing 3 Idiots as well.

WORLDWIDE RECORDS

UK BOX OFFICE RECORDS

In the UK, MNIK previewed on Thursday with an incredible £123k from 89 sites, 4th in the market place behind Avatar, The Wolfman Previews and Invictus.

In this market, MNIK has broken the record for the biggest GBO preview figure for any Bollywood release. The biggest single day preview figure in the UK was previously KANK with £98k.

The biggest total previews figure was 3 IDIOTS which had 2 days of previews (Wed/Thu) during the Xmas holiday period with £121k. MNIK single day previews are bigger than both days of 3 Idiots put together!

It is expected to be the biggest opening Bollywood film ever in this market by the weekend.

ANZ RECORDS

In Australia, Thursday previews of "MNIK" grossed a very good A$39K (US$34K). The movie is ranked #11 in the market. This is 107% of 3 Idiots Thursday BO.

In New Zealand, opening day took LC$ 13,627 (US$ 9,727). Bollywood films traditionally open on a Friday. The exception is 3 Idiots, against which MNIK has over-performed by 204%.

MIDDLE EAST RECORDS

The film is already 50% higher than any other previous film in Bollywood history with an opening day estimated at USD 300k.

There's a huge demand for additional prints in the existing chains across the Middle East and the print count is expected to increase to around 60 by next week.

Given the strong buzz, the film also will be released in Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Oman and Lebanon in the coming week.

Raj Kumar Hirani- over-rated director?

I wouldn't like to tow the line and put it this way: Rajkumar Hirani 's direction is very repetitive and though the scripts may be novel, there is nothing new from him to offer as a director. His movies have one thing: one authority who is feared by many people and a protagonist who is willing to take him on through love and peace. In Munnabhai MBBS, Lagey Raho Munnabhai and 3 Idiots, Boman Irani's character was that of a hard task master or a tough to please guy. I would rather appreciate versatility in a director like Raj Kumar Santoshi who makes movies as different as Damini, Andaaz Apna Apna and Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani. or even Mani Rathnam whose Anjali is way different from Velu Nayakan.

What was so new in 3 Idiots? Do you own thing and dont be a herd mentality, well that's been done so many times. This subject is as cliched as Karan Johar's brand of cinema which he once tread in. But now at least Karan Johar has done something differnt and distinct with My Name is Khan.

Even so many scenes in Raj Kumar Hirani's films are similiar and copy of each other: the scene in which the professor asks Rancho to teach something in the class is similar to Boman Irani's character asking Sanjay Dutt to do an operation on the deadbody in Munnabhai MBBS. The ragging scene was present in Lage Raho Munnabhai and 3 Idiots. What Hirani does is take a buzzword like 'jadhu ki jhappi' 'gandhigiri' or 'all izz well' and uses it to the skies, digging it into the minds of people as if it was the mantra to get love, success and all the good things that make life beautiful And then we have the toilet humor, the slapstick humor and mutravisarjan, dont know why, but if the same lines in the film were used in a David Dhawan film or Priyadarshan film, critics would surely call it a potty movie. But since, Aamir Khan is in there,the movie has to be good. Come on Hirani, make a better movie next time, we know you are capable, just don't take the audience for granted

My Name is Khan released on February 12 with a fantastic reception. A lot of people have given rave reviews for the people. SRK in Twitter seemed overwhelmed with joy as he wrote

Shahrukh Khan: My Name is Khan is Risky as Baazigar

Here are excerpts of Shahrukh Khan interview where he talks about how My Name is Khan (read review of My Name is Khan), his strengths and weaknesses and his choice of scripts(excerpt from Rediff)

Is doing a film like MNIK a risk for you?
I've done about 70 films to date -- including films featuring guest appearances. I realise that whenever I have taken chances, I have not necessarily succeeded. But whenever I have failed, I have not felt very bad. Whenever I've succeeded, I've felt much better than in a film when I have not taken chances.

On the whole, it is better to try something new, rather than do the same thing. There is no guarantee which film will work. I've always been like that. If you don't change often enough, you will not be able to evolve or do something new. Stagnancy, same place, comfort zone -- I've never believed in that. I come from Delhi and I play films off the cuff. But that does not mean I am flippant.

I often pay movie tickets and see films. Those [the audiences] are the only people I work for. I don't work for the director or the producer. I work for those, who pay Rs 12 or $12. And when I say that I am also aware that I want to work for them in a way, that god willing, I'm able to make them evolve also. It's not just, 'Oh you want this, so I'll give it.' No! I'll give this and a little more. So, in the next one expect a little more, I have been telling my friends and the audiences from my early years.

So, I'll do a Baazigar [in 1993] where I'm a negative guy. Everyone told me, 'Oh this won't work!' But it became a huge hit. And then everyone told me that doing a love story [Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge] for me after Baazigar won't work; but Dilwale is still running after 15 years. Everyone told me that Darr won't work. But my audience told me otherwise.

If I count the last eight films of mine, you will find yes, they are Hindi films; that's the only common thing in them. Otherwise, inherently, there is a new kind of hero; but I don't make a big thing about it.


You have not got enough credit for your work...

I am often a low profile person. That's because, even for My Name Is Khan, people ask me, 'How do you prepare for it?' I'm not very thrilled answering that question.

It's important not to ask the chef how he makes the dish. Just tell him if it's tasty or not tasty. And that's what I believe an actor should be. Any actor who starts telling you how he prepared for the role, is actually boring you and making an excuse for a bad performance, I think.

In this case, I needed to tell because it is related to an autism disorder. So, you have to give it the respectability. Yes, I've researched it; I've not just gone and played it. But whenever there is no research -- in most of my roles I don't -- or even if there is research, it is not going to disturb the character. Some may say, 'Oh, he did not research to be a teacher.' But, in fact, I do. But I don't like talking about it because I believe that's not what I'm paid to do. I'm paid to make you have a tasty dinner; not tell you how that was made.

Yes, I take my chances. My Name Is Khan is also as risky as Baazigar on a different level. Of course, I have the stardom to back it, it will open well, I have Kajol, Karan (Johar, the producer and director), all those safety nets are there but in spite of it all, I think very few heroes will play the role I have played. Inshallah [god willing], when you see the film you [will] realise.

My challenge is here is a character who does not feel love, who does not know how to cry or laugh, sing or dance, and yet in this film, I am going to be the most romantic hero. I want every woman to turn around and say, 'I want to have a person who loves me like this.' And yet my character does not know what love means. It is a true disorder, and it is not made up. You will at the end of the film feel, 'Oh my god, I wish he could be in love with me', knowing fully well my character does not feel love, he does not cry. I don't think I can succeed in convincing you that he is a lovable guy. And yet you feel for this man, you love him. That is the challenge I have in this film.



Locations are very important for this film, isn't it?
My Name is Khan is very expensive. It has been shot mostly between Los Angeles and San Francisco. I have shot many films in America starting with [Subhash Ghai's] Pardes shot mostly in and around Las Vegas [in 1997], and several films including Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna in the New York area.

My Name is Khan is about journey, one man's journey to win his love back. We wanted the whole countryside and location of the country to play an important part. We wish we could have got the permission to shoot in the White House. We didn't, so we cheated, shot opposite [California Governor] Arnold Schwarzenegger's office in [the state capitol] Sacramento. This film would not have been anywhere else but set in America.

Do you ever go through a doubt or anxiety when working with a team that has produced a major hit?

I have no self doubt ever when I have said yes to something. I tell myself, 'This is it, this is the best that god made for me.' I am very spiritual about my work -- very, very spiritual. It sounds strange. I think of my work as the only thing I was made for. I think of my work as the happiest moment of life. When I am acting I am one with god, very strangely. I don't say it because a lot of people will find it weird. I have said in a documentary on me [made by the British filmmaker Munni Kabir]. With the huge connect I have with Allah, god, I am sitting here and saying, 'Wow, he has given me a chance to express in one lifetime, so many expressions of so many different people and people like me for it. And they pay me for it. Who gets a chance like this?'

I am so many people in a day and it is so wonderful. In the last 20 years, very few children [of my generation] have got a chance to live out the fantasy that I have. And thankfulness shows in my performances. I am only doing it to please everyone. It is never self centered. People think I am arrogant because of my sense of humour. I am very humble and down to earth. And people who know me know that.

Does it hurt you much to read negative criticism about you?

If you don't know me, you will say or write negative things about me. My Name Is Khan is about such things: If you don't me, if you don't know the religion, you may think you have the right to dislike me or anyone belonging to a particular religion. It is my duty to tell people about these things. Once you know it, you may say, 'Oh, this is cool.' It is lack of knowing me, people say certain things about me, which is okay.

You have worked in some of the most successful films of your career made by Karan Johar. And some of your biggest hits have had Kajol. Do you feel a little nervous when you join them on a new film?

Whenever I do a film with friends like Kajol and Karan, I feel that the success I have had with them is not a monkey on my back. There is actually even more confidence that this new project will be bigger than Dilwale. I feel that Khan should be a bigger hit than Karan's KANK.

I only think positive and I have never had a negative strain in my life. I only say when I sign a film with them, 'Oh wow, here is the team that is going to make the biggest film ever.' If it happens, it is very good. If it doesn't happen, it does not lessen the love I have for them.

Sometimes people say I have been on the top for two decades. In reality, for 20 years I have had my ups and I have had my downs. People have said, 'He has lost his golden touch' but that is not true. I am going to come back following any downs. I would like to think I am the comeback kid. I cherish being a movie star, with so much of spirituality and love in my work and around me that you cannot take them away from me And if you can't take these things away from me, I will always have confidence in me.

I wish success for Kajol [in MINK] because she makes so few films, and for Karan Johar because he has made a big movie. He is a very conscientious guy and he deserves all the success. And I hope I can participate in more of his films.


As an artist what are your strengths and weaknesses?

I never look at the script. I never work with the scripts. I work with people, who make the scripts work. My biggest undoing is my faith in people. My biggest plus point is also my faith in people. In Karan Johar I have the fullest faith. He told me in a few words what My Name Is Khan about. Even if he hadn't, I would have signed for the film.

He came to my wife [Gauri Khan] telling her to ask me to read the script. He said everyone connected with the film had seen it. Even in the case of Kal Ho Naa Ho [which Johar produced and Nikhil Advani directed], I did not read the script. I said, you tell me the preceding scene and what comes after this, and I am fine with it.

And as a producer?

I have my ups and downs. Phir Bhi Dil Hai Hindustani did not do well. And yet I made Asoka which did not do well, too. And yet I made Paheli. Some people have told me that I should not make the films that people won't like. But I feel every time I am making a film that people have given me so much of love and support that I should give them something strong. I have lost money on films. My cricket team has lost money. And people, even my family, ask me, 'Aren't you sad, aren't you disturbed?' I always say, 'God has given me so much, I cannot be sad. I cannot be disheartened. And I will come back.'

On Sunday evening, Katrina was spotted getting into a rickshaw in Andheri along with her business manager. It so happened that the actress had gone to watch Ishqiya (read review of Ishqiya) at a suburban multiplex, and when she had come out, she couldn't locate where her driver was.

An eyewitness reveals, "Dressed in jeans and a tee, Katrina was accompanied by her manager and bodyguards. She had come to catch Ishqiya. After the show, at around 10.30 pm, she came out and was trying to call her driver to get the car. Being a weekend there was a lot of traffic."

The source continues, "Even after trying several times, Katrina was unable to get through to the driver. Apparently he had parked her SUV in the basement and there was a problem with the network connectivity. By this time, people recognized her and a crowd started gathering. Thinking quickly, Katrina made her way to the road and hailed a rickshaw. She got into one with her manager while her bodyguards got into another and followed her."

My Name is Khan Movie Review: Shahrukh Khan's Best Role

My Name is Khan is Karan Johar’s best work and Shahrukh Khan's most powerful role to date. A fantastically written and directed film, the SRK-Kajol starrer My Name is Khan hits it where it hurts the most-the heart.

The terrorist subject is a difficult one to attempt and also a risky one, considering that one feels that quite a few movies on the subject has already been made-Kurbaan (read why Kurbaan flopped), New York, Fanaa etc. But Karan Johar successfully makes My Name is Khan stand out among any previous work done before on this subject, and has given it the right amount of sensitivity as well.

Rizvan Khan(Shahrukh Khan), suffering from Asperger’s syndrome moves to San Francisco(US) and lives with his brother (Jimmy Shergill) and sister-in-law(Sonya Jehan). He falls in love with a girl named Mandira(Kajol). Though his brother protests against this, the couple hold strong to their love and finally they are married. The couple start a business; thing look good till terror strikes on September 11. Due to the 9/11 attack, there is a change in the attitude towards Muslims They confront a tragedy which devastates Mandira who leaves him. Rizwan, confused, decides to embark on a moving journey across the US in search of his love.

My Name is Khan has a touching script that binds you closely. The scenes are beautifully woven with each other with good transitioning of events in the film.

2. Kajol’s outbursts with SRK following the tragedy
3. SRK saving a hurricane stricken hamlet

Plus points of My Name is Khan:
Karan Johar’s direction is first-rate. If he was yumazing in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, he strikes a powerful resonance with people in mY Name is Khan. Easily Karan Johar’s best work to date, My Name is Khan shows that Karan Johar has what it takes to create both dreams and reality in celluloid very well
Shibani Bhatija’s screenplay is top-class. Ravi K. Chandran’s cinematography gives the movie, a picture-post card value. and Niranjan Iyengar's dialogues are relevant and interesting at the same time. Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy's music matches the theme of the film

The performance of SRK and Kajol deserve a special mention. With two of the greatest stars in their most challenging roles, you can’t go wrong.

Performances in My Name is Khan:
Kajol is pure volcano of emotions and she gives yet another power-packed performance.. Her character is a very powerful one and perhaps no actress can compliment SRK like Kajol does which is why they share the perfect chemistry in Bollywood.

To say that Shahrukh khan’s best performance is in My Name is Khan would be an insult to the other roles he has done so far, but this one by far is SRK’s most challenging role. In that sense, Shahrukh Khan’s best performance is in My Name is Khan. He holds you mersmerized with his histrionics so much that you cannot image SRK without Asperger’s syndrome.
Of course, we cannot negate other capable actors who have given solid performances in their own way. Some of the best ones being Arif Zakaria (yes, he’s back), Zarina Wahab, Jimmy Shergill, Arjun Mathur, Parvin Dabbas, Sugandha Garg, Tanay Chedda (young SRK), Yuvaan Maakar(SRK and Kajol’s son Sameer), Navneet Nishan, Vinay Pathak and Christopher B. Duncan.

Tahir Hussain, Aamir Khan's Father Dead

Tahir Hussain, Aamir Khan's father has died. He passed away in Aamir's Bandra residence in the morning. Aamir Khan and his wife Kiran are in US, attending the Sundance Festival while Tahir's grandson Imran Khan, who starred in Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, is in New Zealand. Both will be coming back catching the respective first flights from their place.

Tahir is survived by his wife and two sons, Aamir and Faisal, and two daughters, Farhat and Nikhat.
