Ajay Devgan or Akshay Kumar: Who is better?

Two actor-superstars Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan have been doing brilliantly right through their careers. Both of them started their careers together and even acted with each other in successful movies of the 90s like Suhaag.

Here are the common factors between Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan

Both of them are in their early 40s. Akshay is 42 and Ajay is 41

Both Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar debuted in the same year, 1991. While Ajay Devgan’s cult superhit Phool aur Kaante is still revered, making him walk away with the Filmfare Best Debut Award, Akshay Kumar had a slow start. Not many saw his debut film Saugandh, and the other film Deedar(which he signed first) opposite Karisma Kapoor also flopped. It finally took the superhit Khiladi in 1992 to bring Akshay Kumar into limelight.

Both Ajay Devgn and Akshay Kumar signed a lot of crappy films in the 90s due to which they were typecast as mere action heroes. But still both actors maintained their consistency in terms of hits. While Akshay Kumar did Mohra, Suhaag, Main Khiladi Tu Anari,Sabse Bada Khiladi, Ajay Devgan managed to dole out some hits like Vijaypath, Diljale, Ishq, Pyaar Toh Hona Hi Tha and Zakhm.

The turn-around year for Ajay Devgan was 1999 when he did Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. He got an image makeover and he was now seriously being looked upon as an all-round actor. For Akshay Kumar, the turnaround ended in 2000 with the cult comedy HeraPheri and thus started his association with the hit machine Priyadarshan.

Both of them are dare-devil stuntmen and action heroes who do most of their stunts without body double. Ajay Devgan's entry in Phool aur Kaante is still in public memory. Akshay Kumar dwells in action. Both of them are black-belts in Karate

Both actors do comical roles very well. Ajay Devgan is a permanent fixture in Rohit Shetty films. Golmaal series and All the Best show that Ajay Devgn is the man to go for , when it comes to sensible and wacky comedies. Akshay Kumar needs no introduction when it comes to playing hilarious characters. Whenever he does a funny role, he hits jackpot like he did in Khatta Meetha. Both Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan have committed to taking funny roles because they have earned them earn huge fan-base and no one likes tear-jerkers any more.

Both actors are on a bull-run in 2010. While Khatta Meetha was Akshay’s best Once Upon a Time in Mumbai is Ajay Devgn’s best performance. He still has Golmaal 3 to go. Check out why 2010 is Ajay Devgn’s best year. Akshay Kumar fresh from the hits, Housefull and Khatta Meetha is on a roll. He now has Patiala House and Tees Maar Khan to release in 2010.

Ajay Devgn has won 2 National Awards for Zakhm and The Legend of Bhagat Singh while Akshay Kumar is yet to win a National Award. He has won Filmfare Awards for Garam Masala and Ajnabee. But Akshay Khiladi Kumar is the only Bollywood actor with maximum hit ratio. He has done more than 90 films and most of them have been successful .

Finally, the titans Akshay and Ajay will clash on November 5, 2010 when Golmaal releases with Action Replay. For the first time, we have the other big league apart from Khans competing with each other.

Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan's Best Performances in 2010

Akshay Kumar’s best performance is in Khatta Meetha, Ajay Devgan’s best performance in Once Upon a Time, is quick on the heels. Both the superstars Ajay Devgan and Akshay Kumar have given their career-best performances in 2010. Into their early 40s, the sex appeal , the persona and the performances of Akshay Kumar and Ajay Devgan have attained dizzying heights. Akshay Kumar has given two diametrically opposite yet brilliant performances in both Housefull as a reserved guy with no luck, and in Khatta Meetha as Sachin Chitkule, an outspoken guy who speaks his mind. Khatta Meetha is Akshay Kumar’s best performance so far.

Ajay Devgn, an actor who lets his work speak for himself also has a good year. Though there are a few months to go still for the year to complete, Ajay is clearly shining. Khatta Meetha a Super Hit

Akshay Kumar has got his magic wand back,Khatta Meetha is a superhit. The actor has finally hit jackpot. If you remember 2008 was Akshay Kumar’s year with 5 back to back hits. Then the downslide started from 2009 no thanks to Chandni Chowk to China, Kambhakkt Ishq, Blue, 8X10 Tasveer. But 2010 has turned to be his lucky year with two hits Houseful and Khatta Meetha.

Khatta Meetha, one of the biggest hits of 2010 has been given a ‘yes’ certificate by the general public who loved it, even though the critics ripped it apart. Akshay Kumar in the role of the common man has given his best performance so far. So convincing was he in the role of Sachin Tichkule, that the character is on its way to be a cult personality.

Khatta Meetha is making good money in the single screen theaters though multiplex audiences gave it a cold shoulder. The film actually turned out to be a profitable proposiion even before its release. The film was made in just Rs. 30 crore, which is quite less, compared to the budget of the films being made now.

A TV channel paid Rs. 12 crore for the rights, the overseas rights were Rs. 5 crore, music fetched Rs. 4 crore and the home video rights got the movie Rs.2 crore. To total it all, the film has made Rs. 23 before its release. A source says, "Khatta Meetha was made with a budget of Rs 30 crore (including print and publicity) and has already made Rs 48 crore in pre-sold rights and digital revenues even before the movie hit screens on Friday."

Director Priyadarshan and Akshay Kumar both agree that the fact that the film was about the common man hit home. Akshay says, “It turned out to be a win-win situation as they bought the film under recession. If my distributors are happy I am happy. Also I'm pleased that the film has worked with the masses. The film is about the common man and if they have liked it, that works for me.”

Khatta Meetha has worked on the ‘law’ set by 2009’s big hit Wanted, starring Salman Khan. If you touch the heart of the common, the movie is a huge hit.

Once Upon a Time Movie Review

While writing the movie review Once Upon a Time, we are happy to say that it follows on the big league of gangster movies that have always fascinated movie goers right from Deewar, Satya, Vaastav,Company, Shootout At Lokhandwala to a romantic-gangster movie called Gangster. This Milan Luthria directed movie is brilliant work and has its thrills and drama intact. In other word, a bang for your buck

In Once Upon a Time, a don called Sultan Mirza rises from the streets of Mumbai and becomes a don. His protégé Emraan Hashmi who follows his footsteps, then becomes his rival and challenges his supremacy. Feel free to draw parallels with Haji Mastan and Dawood Ibraham, the two dons, one dead and the other living; but the fact is the Once Upon a Time weaves human emotions and thrills in a very smart manner, of course, taking some cues from real life episodes.

Plus points of Once Upon a Time: Full marks to director Milan Luthria for coming up with a movie that deserves a round of applause. The retro mood of the 70s and 80s have been worked in great detail and you can find art director Nitin Desai’s best work here. The screenplay is taut, the narrative is perfect and the scenes blend beautifully, certifying the fact that Milan Luthria have given his best as a director. The screenplay by Rajat Aroraa is praiseworthy, the dialogues are arresting and will be mouthed by ‘bacha bachas’
Pritam has held his own ground in this gangster movie. Fresh from the success of Khatta Meetha, Pritam comes with an outstanding in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. Three songs particulary get a mention, 'Pee Loon', 'Tum Jo Aaye' and the remix of APNA DESH. The editing of the movie is top as well and the credit goes to Akiv Ali. As for the cinematography, you can only sit back and say ‘wow’ to Aseem Mishra. Yes, believe it or not, after 3 Idiots, here we come across a movie called Once Upon a Time, which is technically perfect, all of them doing a classy job behind the camera.

Minus points of Once Upon a Time: There are minor aberrations in Once Upon a Time like the scene, where Randeep Hoonda, the police inspector goes to commit suicide without the reasons being mentioned The pace of the movie post second half is slow but thankfully, it picks up superbly during the confrontation scene between Hashmi and Devgn. A little shorter length would have made the movie a masterpiece.

Performances in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai: We had put a poll about which was Ajay Devgan’s best performance. All that may change now because Ajay Devgn’s best performance arguably, is in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. Though his role is similar to the one he did in Company, in this movie, it has a better shade and he exploits it like no one else’ business. Emraan Hashmi’s too has given his best performance in Once Upon a Time in Mumbai. An under-rated actor for sure, he is one actor who has always delivered and typifying him just by the serial kisser title is doing him injustice. Watch him emote in the penultimate scenes in the film and you realize that he has delivered a master-stroke. Emraan excels in the character of Sohaib, a wickedly ambitious guy.

The women do just as well.
Kangna Ranaut shows oodles of sex appeal that remind us of the charm of the bygone era. She brings to the table an inspiring performance. Prachi Desai does a good job as Emraan Hashmi’s girlfriend and she sizzles in the Bobby track. Both the girls share a very good chemistry with the leading actors. Gauhar Khan gets a special appearance in the remix track and makes a mark.

Conclusion: Overall, Once Upon a Time in Mumbai is scintilliating. Go Get Your Ticket.
Rating:****(Very Good)

How does Aamir Khan choose his films?

How does Aamir Khan choose his movies? This may well be a good 'how to' question to the Ace Khan who strikes gold everytime. 3 Idiots, Ghajini, Taare Zameen Par, Rang De Basanti: all of these Aamir Khan films have broken the records of his previous films and have set milestones in their own right. So how does Aamir Khan pick his films?

Let us hear from Aamir in his interview to Stardust magazine. He says, "It has to do with the passion of the film-maker. Imagine we are sitting at a party in the midst of 20 poeple and I tell you: Share with me interesting anecdotes of yur life, some fascinating story or exciting story that has happened with you. You wil think about what to say, and after 5 minutes, come with some story"

Aamir continues, "Now here is another example. The same party is going on with the same 20 people sitting. The same music is playing. But you ring the bell, walk in and say, "Guess what guys what happened' And because you have a story to tell, you will tell it well. There may be a technical fault with the story but if you are telling it from your heart, you will hit home. When Rakeysh Mehra narrated 'Rang De Basanti' to me, I thought it was a bizarre script. The story of Bhagat Singh and Azad had come four times before and and the last of those four, had released two months ago and flopped, at that time. I remember telling to Rakeysh Mehra, " Arrey Abhi toh flop hui last waali' But I could see that he was dying to tell a story. Of course, I loved the script and the screenplay.

Shah Rukh Khan Acting in an Aamir Khan Directed Movie?

Okay, this is most Bollywood 's  favorite fantasy: Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan together in one film. But can it happen? Well, putting the professional rivalry, the jabs, the masti and the friendship that they share, they have never said 'yes' for a movie together. But how about a movie with Aamir Khan as a director and Shah Rukh Khan as a lead role in it. Then there will not be ego clashes, and yes, no one can criticize Aamir Khan's skills when it comes to direction-he made the legendary Taare Zameen Par, and SRK of course is India's global brand. Together, they can create history for sure.

Incidentally not many people know that Rang De Basanti would have been a bigger hit than what it was, if you are taking star power into consideration. Shah Rukh Khan was to do the role of Madahavan in the film, and Hrithik Roshan was requested by Aamir Khan to do the role of Siddarth in the film. However, things didn't work and Shah Rukh Khan had other commitments and Hrithik got busy with Krrish.

Shah Rukh Khan and Aamir Khan have got both their movies released on the same day in the year 1995 when both Shahrukh's Ram Jaane and Aamir Khan's Akele Hum Akele Tum released. While SRK's Ram Jaane did well in village, Akele Hum Akele Tum fared better in cities in those times.

Raj Kumar Hirani to make Munnabhai 3, not 300 Gods

Raj Kumar Hirani, easily the best director of India has stated that the next movie that he will make is the third installment of the Munnabhai series, and not 300 Gods as was speculated by certain sections of the media.

Raju says, “We have 33 crore Gods . Why would I choose 300 of those? Unless of course, people think that in three hours I can only accommodate 300. Anyway the important issue here is that I will be making a movie on religion. But media reports saying it deals with 300 Gods is wrong. My writer Abhijat Joshi is here. And we have just got a fix on the idea. The script itself is still to be written. I’m also writing Munnabhai.’’

Raju who has made 3 Idiots, the highest earning movie ever in Bollywood says that he treats every film of his as his first film. He says, "Just because I have three good films behind me, it doesn’t make me all-powerful. I have to still strive to give my best to whatever I undertake. A filmmaker is only as good as his last film.’’

Though the media is going gung-ho talking about Raju casting Shah Rukh Khan or Aamir Khan, Raju says, "I have worked with the best — Aamir. However, I can’t say who the leading man in my next film is unless I have a ready script. I don’t write films keeping an actor in mind. It goes the other way around.’’

The 3 Idiots director believes that Bollywood is going through the best phase. “While ten years ago we only made love stories with the song-dance fix, now we have makers like Vishal Bhardwaj, Anurag Kashyap and Imtiaz Ali doing different work. Each has his own style and strength. And Hindi cinema is certainly poised for a great take-off.’’ And finally is the world really his oyster? “Yes it is... but I can’t eat it all as the phrase says. I must still be content with eating only a small morsel. In other words, I will continue to make one film in two years. If I get greedy, I will fall flat on my face.’’

A.R. Rahman should sing more,

A R Rahman is definitely the best thing that music can provide in present times. Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na still lives on as does Jodhaa Akbar. The mellifluous melodies of Delhi 6 still ring in our eyes. Okay, we excuse the aberration called Blue.
Now A.R.Rahman has some very good musical projects like Shankar's Endhiran, Abbas Tyrewala's 1-800-Love, Imtiaz Ali's Rockstar (Bollywood Trends places its best on this one!!) and Shekhar Kapur's Paani.

Internationally many people call 'Jai Ho' A.R.Rahman's best song but there are many Indians and hardcore A.R.Rahman fans who think that the title song of Dil Se is the best A.R.Rahman song ever. And the best thing in that song-Rahman's voice. So can we have more of Rahman singing, please?

The movie is actually a remake of the 1989 Priyadarshan film(who also made Khatta Meetha),, Vellanakalude Nadu. Khatta Meetha Movie Review: Must Watch Entertainer of 2010

Finally, Priyadarshan comes up with a movie, Khatta Meetha that is equal to the likes of Hera Pheri and Hungama. If David Dhawan was the entertainer of the 90s, this decade belongs to Priyadarshan for sure. Khatta Meetha as people know is a remake of the famous 1989 Malayalam hit, Vellanakalude Nadu. The original starred one of the best actors of India, Mohanlal. Akshay Kumar in the reprised role of Sachin Chitkule stands up for the challenge and delivers what can be safely said his best performance to date. Watch Khatta Meetha for Akshay Kumar at his best.
Story of Khatta Meetha
In Khatta Meetha, Akshay Kumar plays the role of a contractor Sachin Chitkule, who has resigned to a normal man’s life, where he works his way through bribes so that he is able to get his job done quickly. In his family are brothers who are doing well for themselves, working in the municipal level and doing frauds and crimes at a bigger level. Akshay kumar however meets with failures even if he does things right or if he tries to manipulate. During one of his endeavors, he meets up with his old love Trisha who is the municipal commissioner. She does not take kindly to him and proves to be his roadblock. Also Akshay Kumar’s workers are a group of lunactics, who always screw up and add to Akshay’s woes. The movie is pepped with comedy and occasional dramatic moments, making it a neat package , which has a contemporary value also . Full marks to Priyadarshan for making Khatta Meetha watchable in 2010 even though the original was in 1989
Techically speaking
The editing of the movie is very sharp, not giving you much of a time to think. Some of the funny scenes may be things that you have seen before, for instance, the damaged painting scene in Asrani’s home that looks straight out of Bean the Movie, but we can excuse that. Since it is a tried and tested formula, Priyadarshan looks quite confident of pulling the movie in his trademark style and he succeeds.
Song picturizations in Khatta Meetha The songs do not stop the flow of the film and in fact, adds the glamor touch. The songs are positioned at proper intervals and Trisha looks lovely especially in the Teecha Nanachi Taang song.
Performances in Khatta Meetha
We don’t think any other actor in Bollywood would have pulled Khatta Meetha with so much elan as Akshay Kumar. He has breathed life in the role, so much that Sachin Chitkule looks like someone you know. His comic timing is superb in the film. He even looks surprisingly young in the role of a college student. Another actor who matches him scene for scene is the irrepressible Rajpal Yadav. Whenever he comes on screen, it is a riot. Johnny Lever also manages to impress in a cameo. Sadly, Trisha’s performance is below par and the shocking thing is that though she is rated top in South, she looks quite a novice in Khatta Meetha much below the likes of an Asin or even what Priyamani did in Raavan
Conclusion: Khatta Meetha is the best entertainer of 2010 so far. A superhit is certain, let’s wait and watch if Golmaal 3 can beat it.

Rajeev Masand Amitabh Bachchan Controversy

After Chetan Bhagat vs Aamir Khan conroversy, it is journalist Rajeev Masand Big B controversy that is rising up. The war of words started on everyone's favorite online playground, Twitter.

Rajeev Masand, while expressing his opinion on promotional gimmick by Akshay Kumar on his new release tweeted – ‘Need innovative ideas to promote films in competitive times. But Akshay Kumar grinning like a jackass at RKLaxman's hospital bed is a new low’.

Mentioning of Akshay Kumar as ‘jackass’ was something Amitabh Bachchan didn't appreciate and while expressing his unhappiness he tweeted the journalist back –‘Rajeev, your fraternity will never pull you up for calling Akshay a 'jackass'. Ever thought if the reverse were to be done... would your fraternity have spared Akshay if he were to address you as one? Never expected this language from you!’

Amitabh Bachchan then tweeted Barkha Dutt, who tweeted earlier that she was sad about journalists who spread canards about other journalists. Bachchan in his tweet to Barkha Dutt said, “One of your colleagues Rajeev Masand, just called Akshay Kumar a jackass. Is this your 'aspiration' for 'higher standards’!

To give an end to all this, Rajeev Masand wrote an open letter to Bachhan on July 12, 2010 which goes as:

In response to your message to me, my humble reply:

Dear Sir, Let us consider: if my fraternity won't pull me up for that 'jackass' comment, could it possibly be because they see some sense in my comment?

Or could it be because that is what fraternity does: Stands by each other? You should know, Sir.

I don't remember your fraternity pulling you up for the attack on photographers by security outside your house during Abhishek’s wedding.

I don't remember your fraternity so much as expressing outrage when Abhishek ‘allegedly’ bashed up a photographer on a film set.

But your concern Sir, is the use of the term 'jackass'. A strong word, perhaps, but appropriate I think, to express horror at the complete lack of sensitivity involved in a film promotion of that nature.

However, controversial my choice of words, it is me taking a ‘stand’, Sir, expressing my ‘opinion’. Two words your fraternity seems largely unfamiliar with.

Regarding your outrage/disappointment at my choice of words apologies, Sir. If expressing my opinion lowers your impression of me, then that is a cross I shall have to bear. But finally, by your own logic, Sir: will your fraternity pull up Akshay for this tasteless gimmick? Or do you think it is innovative too?

Respectfully yours,

Rajeev Masand

Khatta Meetha Story

Akshay Kumar is of the firm belief that Khatta Meetha will be more successful and entertaining than Hera Pheri. Why does he have so much confidence? Because Khatta Meetha is the remake of the Malayalam superhit comedy movie Vellanakalude Nadu. The original Malayalam film was also directed by Priyadarshan as does Khatta Meetha, and the original starred Mohanlal and Shobana among others. The malayalam film has a cult following. Here is a scene from Vellanakalude Nadu

Here is Khatta Meetha' story in brief:

Struggling road construction contractor, Sachin Tichkule (Akshay Kumar) is doomed to dream big. There is no chance in hell that his dreams will ever come true, simply because he has no money to bribe! To make matters worse, the new municipal commissioner turns out to be his ex girl friend (Trisha Krishnan) who now hates him. Even as you laugh as Sachin bubbles his way from one disaster to another, the film reveals in a light hearted way, the extent of corruption and bribery rampant in the system, and the ingenious means you have to adopt if you want to survive.
A comic caper all the way with sprinkles of drama, this is an entertainer you should look for.
