Break Ke Baad Movie Review: Take a Break from This Boredom

The only thing original about Break Ke Baad is the credit-roll. A story that has nothing new to offer, it is tepid from the beginning and insipid after the break.

Story of Break Ke Baad: Abhay ( Imran Khan) and Aaliyah ( Deepika Padukone) are childhood sweethearts; the girl is practical and way too ambitious while the lad is yet to figure out what to do with his life. After establishing through some scenes about how they bicker, fight, make up, make out... director Danish Alam takes the Jaane Tu Ya Jaane route where the girl declares that she has to go to Australia for mass communication course. Imran didn’t like it then, and he does not like it now; as well.

But in this case, the action actually shifts to Australia where Deepika stays with a sex weirdo Yudishtir (really weird) and Shahana Goswami (wasted) thoroughly. Our hero comes there as well, even though Aaliyah maintains she wants to take a break from the relationship After some misunderstanding enough for the boy to make it big and the girl to sacrifice her ambition, Aaliyah realizes her folly and becomes a part of an ever abused filmi climax set at the wedding arena.

Plus points: A fine performance by Deepika Padukone and good cinematography. After seeing the unique manner in which the credits were shown, one expected a better treatment, if not a good story. But that was not meant to be.

Minus points of Break ke Baad:
1. Everything is so very Jaane Tu, I Hate Luv Storys, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Hum Tum, Kal Ho Na Ho and Salaam Namaste and Love Aaj Kal. The movie borrows copiously and ends up quite lame. You just get a déjà vu experience and there is hardly a single scene that you can carry with you. If you thought that the girl going down her knees to propose was cute, Katrina Kaif did that way more sweetly in a song from New York!
2. The director could have exploited the long distance angle in a very good, moving manner. But no, he makes Imran come all the way to Australia and spoils, what could have been an interesting angle.
3. The pace of the movie is slow, the plot uninspiring and the dialogues jaded. Somehow Lilette Dubey gets the best lines (you crackle when she says 'get her some boobs' ).
4. Absence of a good background score; something peppy would have been better for a film of this sort.
5. The movie unnecessary pretends to be cool by using words ‘screw you’, ‘I am screwed' etc .  All that brouhaha about appealing to the Internet generation as hyped in media, is reduced to Imran wondering what to put in Facebook-Complicated or Single.
6. There is no chemistry worth mentioning, Deepika ends up looking more like Imran’s big, haughty sister.
7. The screenplay by Renuka Kunzru and Danish Aslam is such a mess. What was the producer Kunal Kohli doing, he is supposed to be a film critic as well, with a fine eye for films. How did he approve of this?

Performances in Break Ke Baad
Imran Khan needs to take a break, his choice of films is so similar, that it hurts. Let's see what he does 'Break Ke Baad'. He seemed jaded in this one. Deepika Padukone is a fine actor, who has given an earnest performance but she needs something that can justify her talent, like Lafangey Parindey did. The lesser said about the character actors the better; with weak characterizations; none of them make any sort of impact. Sharmila Tagore and Naveen Nischol are reduced to pale shadow of themselves..

Conclusion; Lack of originality and a much traveled terrain makes Break Ke Baad avoidable. Need a break from this boredom.

Dhobi Ghat: Oscar Material?

Director Kiran Rao is optimistic that her debut film, Dhobi Ghat is Oscar material. She explains that it not a commercial film, and more in the league of art-house genre. Hrithik's best friend Shah Rukh Proud of Guzaarish

Shah Rukh Khan and Hrithik Roshan are thick friends and are always happy about each other’s work. On Friday night, SRK watched Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Guzaarish with his close family and friends; he was so impressed and moved by the film, that he woke Hrithik out of slumber and made him drive down to his bungalow Mannat.

Just recovered from a viral attack, Hrithik didn’t mind it, and drove down to Mannat, where Suzanne was also perched with SRK’s wife Gauri. Shah Rukh and Hrithik discussed Guzaarish and Hrithik's performance until 2 am.

Says a source, "Shah Rukh had asked for a print of Guzaarish because he's very fond of Hrithik. Also because Shah Rukh had played a physically challenged character in My Name Is Khan. He was curious to see how Hrithik had approached the character of a physically disabled hero. What started as profession inquisitiveness turned into a complete involvement with the onscreen goings-on. Shah Rukh felt Hrithik in Guzaarish excelled his own performance in My Name Is Khan.Shah Rukh also feels Guzaarish was way superior to what the director Sanjay Bhansali had achieved with Shah Rukh in Devdas."

Says Hrithik, "In fact Sussanne was already at Mannat. When Shah Rukh wanted me to go over I had no choice. He's always very generous."

Isn’t it rare for a collegue to be so proud of another’s performance when even he had given an equally wonderful performance in the same year, in the same genre!

Deepika Padukone, Katrina Kaif in Housefull 2

Katrina Kaif and Deepika Padukone will share screen space in Housefull 2. It was believed that Ranbir had ditched Deepika for Katrina and since, then the two had not seen eye to eye. However, all these are a thing of past because both Katrina and Deepika are in Housefull.

A source says, "The Housefull sequel will see a lot of new faces. Apart from Akshay Kumar, Ritesh Deshmukh, Arjun Rampal, Deepika Padukone, the new list comprises of Katrina Kaif, Paresh Rawal, John Abraham and Nana Patekar. But what will be exciting is to have Katrina and Deepika in the same frame. Both the actresses are not on good terms. Recently, Deepika's statement on a chat show about wanting to see Katrina's passport didn't go down well with Katrina."

When contacted, director Sajid Khan said, "I am on the scripting stage at the moment. There are a lot of names that are confirmed and some still need to be. At the moment, I can confirm John Abraham, Akshay and Ritesh."

Aishwarya Rai to do Heroine instead of Kareena

It is believed that Aishwarya Rai will be in Heroine, instead of Kareena Kapoor. The movie is an ambitious project of Madhur Bhandar and after wrapping ‘Dil TOh Bacha Hai Jee’, he is thinking of plunging head on in this project. ‘Heroine’ has been in news for quite some time, keeping the media in speculation as Kareena had kept the project on tenterhooks.

Kareena Kapoor, reportedly, had reservations about the love scenes in the films, where she had make love to five actors in the film. But then, it was believed that she had a problem with the dates. Now, if it is believed Heroine will be done by Aishwarya Rai.

Aishwarya however, has some reservation about the hot scenes in Heroine. She is okay with doing the film on the condition that Madhur removes the love making scenes in the film. But it is not like that Madhur will do it, because he believes that these scenes are an important part of the film. And as we had seen in his films like Corporate and Fashion, the scenes really had an important part to play in the film, and was not used as a sleaze element.

A source close to the director tells us that the director now might have to consider some one else altogether for 'Heroine' as changing the script might not sound as a good idea to him. Madhur denies being in touch with Ash for the film. He says, “The project is on hold till 'Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji' releases in January 2011. I have just finished a 70 day schedule and I am now editing the film."

Hrithik Roshan added weight, binging on junk food to get into the skin of Ethan for Guzaarish. He admits, ‘I am a foodie. As the paralysed man in Guzaarish, I got an excuse to binge. I was eating fried food (batata wadas and samosas), ice-creams and chocolates. For the first time in 15 years, I went overboard.”
In three months, Hrithik’s cholesterol levels were up. The actor admits, "I understood why doctors tell us that junk food can kill. My medical reports set off alarm bells.'' Since the shoot was continous, he had an arduous task to lose all the fat and get into the toned role of Ethan before he turns quardriplegic. So along with trainer Satyadev Chaurasia, Hrithik began Arnold Schwarzenegger's Level 3 competition workout, a programme that transforms one's body in a month. Hrithik says, "I had no idea how the six packs would come back again. Satya and I sat together and made a plan on the diet and the exercise. We had to factor in my numerous injuries. My shoulders are broken, my knee was not functioning, I have a back problem, and we had to meet the deadline because I had to shoot a jazz ballet sequence. It was a complete boot camp. Sometimes I was so dead in the gym that Satya actually kept a trash can fearing I would puke out of fatigue. But we didn't give up.”

Satya adds, "Hrithik hadn't worked out for months on end. And when you don't work out you lose muscle memory. The biggest challenge was to get it back. I feel so proud when I look at him today.''

Hrithik believes that a healthy body and a few minutes of exercise can give mental clarity and improve focus. But he also says that a person should have one day for rest. Says the superstar, "Contrary to what people perceive, the body grows when it is resting. The gym is actually the stimulus and it is the place where the body breaks down the cells. It is when you rest that the brain actually rebuilds the cells. This is the reason why body building is actually called Progressive Overload. If you don't give yourself enough rest, no matter how many hours you spend in the gym, it is not going to help.'

Guzaarish Movie Review: Emotional Manipulation, Mistakes in Guzaarish

Though Euthanasia/Mercy Killing and spinal injury are real problems, Bhansali chooses to distance himself from reality and fashions it with dreamlike opulence for Guzaarish. Save for Hrithik Roshan’s performance and a few poignant moments, there are many reasons why Guzaarish is not a good movie, in its overall context.

Story of Guzaarish: Ethan Mascarenhas (Hrithik Roshan), once a famous magician, is bedridden for the last 12 years, due to a fatal accident while performing on state. His caretaker, Sophia (Aishwarya Rai) has made it her life’s mission to be by his side, and make his life better in every way she could. She also finds Ethan’s company better than her drunken painter of a husband (Makarand Deshpande). Ethan hosts a radio show from his bedroom, that gives hope and a little salt to people’s lives. Out of the blue, one day, Ethan asks his lawyer Devyani (Shernaz Patel) to file a petition for mercy killing; he has a name for it ‘Project Ethanasia’. His loved ones (read the doctor, the lawyer and his nurse) are against this decision and so are many strangers who hear him on the radio show. Despite opposition, he is firm about his fight against the law, and soon his friends come around, understanding his point of view.

Plus points of Guzaarish: Sanjay Leela Bhansali has taken a less tread path of a hero fighting for his death, against the world who simply does not realize his suffering. The director’s forte is evident when he focuses on simple things of life and unspoken feelings. For instance, the part where Hrithik and Aishwarya are in the car en route to the court, they come across a scarecrow, which makes Hrithik reminisce on how that thing has more movement in its arms, than him. Poignant moments, specially between Hrithik and Aishwarya and his own sense of ‘What a Wonderful World’ it is, pervades over every grief and obstacle in his life. The movie is spectacularly shot, with eye-catching visuals.

Minus points about Guzaarish:
1. Somehow one feels that the director has taken the route of emotion manipulation, some scenes look forced to elicit sympathy. For instance, Sanjay Leela Bhansali goes one step ahead by putting one more dramatic turn, making the whole thing look contrived. He had done so in his previous films too, but in this one, it sticks out like a sore thumb For instance, the timing of Ethan’s mother’s death just at the helm of the ‘emotional scene’ of him fighting with the rain drops, look far-fetched.
2. In practicality, even the emotional scenes do not hold water. Yes, you may choke with emotion when you see a lone, helpless Hrithik not even able to bat his eyelids against the water drops falling from the roof overhead. But pray, why is he made to rest on the top floor in that big a house, in spite of his sensitive (or should it be ‘numb’) condition?
3. There is too much melodrama; the emotional appeal could have been effective without going over the top, the ridiculous dialogues definitely do not ease the proceedings. The plot goes nowhere. The courtroom drama is lackluster and banal. Things like the court getting shifted to Ethan’s house look silly and were not needed. Also, Rajat Kapoor,(lawyer opposite Ethan) quite stupidly says that he is of unsound mind. That is funny, he could have said that Ethan has a sound mind, and he should be allowed to live. Why complicate things?
4. The character of Omar Siddiqui (Aditya Roy Kapur) does not really carry the story forward. Even if his father had a role in destroying Ethan’s life, why will he send his son to Ethan, even if he is repenting buckets? He could have very well, taught magic to his own son(considering Ethan is seemingly not able to do so) and gone to apologize himself.
5. The mentally sharp Ethan could have used every iota of his energy to teach a card trick but we do not see any of that. It is fine to show Ethan’s glory days but at least they should have shown Aditya learning ‘SOMETHING’ from him in front of our eyes.
6. Ethan talks about being positive, offers hope and inspiration but there is hardly any scene that indicates that. Even, one of the early scenes where a lad is so thankful for his helpful puts Ethan in a passive, receptive light.
7. The climax is predictable and long-drawn
8. The film wears a synthetic, conditioned look that takes away the pain and angst from the film. Ethan may be paralytic from his lower abdomen but he has a well groomed beard, hair is conditioned well; while his nurse from the Victorian era wears eye-popping blouse and red tart lip gloss. The film is more hung on the character’s appearance rather than the film.
9. The ‘should I die or not’ question to his listeners is stretched beyond limit, till you want to say ‘Okay enough”
10. Scenes like the trick with the white sheets gifted by the guru Ethan to his enterprising student, is confusing: is it really a trick or a metaphoric statement? Whatever it is, it leads nowhere.

Best scenes in Guzaarish:
1. Hrithik taking on the raindrops
2. Hrithik singing ‘what a wonderful world’ happy and positive, even during a funeral.
3. The conflict of opinions between Shernaz Patel and Aishwarya Rai where the latter says that there are other ways to getting Ethan(Hrithik) killed, rather than going through the petition.

Performances in Guzaarish:
Hrithik Roshan’s scintillating performance in Guzaarish, is simply the best performance of 2010. He has truly charm each and everyone with this role, one of his finest performances. Aishwarya Rai does a good job too, but she ends up more as a supporting character to the protagonist, as was intended. Shernaz Patel is the one to watch out for, though a tad over the top in some of the scenes, she is brilliant. Monikangana Dutta was not convincing even in the two scene role and Suhel Seth looked like he was given to crocodile tears.

Conclusion: An exercise at emotional manipulation, Guzaarish is moving only because of Hrithik Roshan’s performance.

Bollywood Movies Copied From South Indian Films, Bollywood South Indian Remakes

Bollywood movies have been copying and doing remakes from South Indian films. We already know about Bollywood plagiarism from Hollywood, Foreign Films but sadly, Bollywood films have been plagiarising from South Indian films too, which most people do not know. Of course, some of them are remakes by the producer-directors who made originals. We already know that Ghajini, Wanted and Salman Khan's next film (remake of Kick) are all remakes but there are many other Bollywood films which were just mere remakes on the sly or copies of South Films, being presented as originals. The least Bollywood producers could have done was given credit to the South Indian original films.

Here is a list of Bollywood movies copying from South Indian movies.

Ram aur Shyam copied from Telugu film Ramudu Bheemudu If you think Bollywood started double roles, you are wrong. Ram aur Shyam, the Dilip Kumar hit is a copy of Ramudu Bheemudu(1964) starring N.T.Rama Rao. In the year 1967, the Bollywood movie was directed by Tapi Chanakya starring Dilip Kumar.

Golmaal 3 movie Review: Best Entertainer of 2010

The smart fools are back again to light up the screen this Diwali with aplomb. This has been one movie that generated considerable word of mouth publicity due to the tried and tested Golmaal Brand. Let us see if Golmaal 3 as the first Indian trilogy can rock the box-office like its predecessors.

Story: Golmaal 3 is the story of two sets of siblings. Ajay Devgn(Gopal) lives with his brother Shreyas Talpade(Laxman), mom Ratna Pathak Shah(Geeta aka Guddi) and his girl pal Kareena Kapoor(Daboo). Arshad Warsi(Madhav), Tusshar Kapoor(Lucky) and Kunal Khemu(Laxman) live with their father Mithun Chakraborty(Pritam). Trouble brews in when the foster parents decide to rekindle their relationship and even consider marriage. But the problem is that the warring children are no way interested in giving them the green signal.

Plus points of Golmaal 3: The Golmaal 3 franchise is high on humor and has clever one- liners reminiscent of Rohit Shetty films, and nonsensical situations. It would have not been easy to make a movie which has so many characters but Rohit manages to make every character stand-out by working on their character traits. Ajay Devgn’s angry outburst, Arshad’s roguish streak, Tusshar’s familiar verbal engima and Sanjay Mishra’s funny spelling errors ..all raise a lot of laughs. This is the most colorful, vibrant Rohit Shetty movie, definitely is a visual spectacle that can grace the big screen.

Golmaal 3 is more style than substance but then the style is substantial enough. The writers Yunus Sajawal and dialogue writers Farhad-Sajid and Bunty Rathore have come up with wacky stuff again .The screenplay hardly gives you time to think, the dialogues are spot-on with witty, outrageous but clean dialogues. The action scenes by Jai Singh Nijjar and the cinematography by Dudley are commendable.
Performances in Golmaal 3:
It is injustice to single out one actor because this clearly is a wonderful team effort. Ajay Devgn who is going through his best phase in 2010, has been given a grunge look with cropped hair, diamond studs et all. He plays the hyper, do-no-mess-with-me character superbly.

Kareena Kapoor’s character is brilliantly written and nicely executed. She packs in well as one of the boys. Bebo has a vibrant, bindaas role of Dabboo, an orphan, who wants to create a Hum Saath Saath Hain out of the warring situation. This is one of the better roles of Kareena Kapoor, bright and bubbly; which she performs with such aplomb

At the cost of exaggeration, one can say Tusshar does the best job in the speech marvel, looks like this is purely his domain and no one can get past through him here. To add to this, he has introduced a new dimension that rakes in more laughter. There is one emotional scene that stands out as well. Shreyas Talpade and Kunal Khemu also enact their characters very well. Arshad is a pure treat and performs with gusto.

Mithun Chakraborty and Ratna Pathak Shah are adorable, while Johnny Lever is too good in his role. As a hare-brained thief Johnny Lever and his absentmindedness can make you ache with laughter. In recent times only Rohit Shetty has been able to elicit his best, be it in All the Best or Golmaal 3. The regulars Vrajesh Hirejee Murli Sharma, Viju Khote, Mukesh Tiwari, Ashwini Kalsekar and Sanjay Mishra have their own fan following by now and they do a brilliant job.

Conclusion: G3 is a full on entertainer. The best entertainer of 2010, Golmaal 3..Go for It!

Rated: ****(Very Good)

Action Replayy Movie Review:

Action Replayy is inspired from Robert Zememkis' 1985 film, Back To The Future, where Michael J.Fox, a hep teenager had a job which our Bunty has in this film. Read more on Bollywood plagiarized list of films
Young Bunty(Aditya Roy Kapoor) is not interested in marrying his girlfriend because he has seen his dad Kishen(Akshay Kumar) and mom Mala(Aishwarya Rai) spend their fighting with each other. But will he change his thinking after he gets to travel back in time, find out the past and amend his parents’ love story?

Plus points: Full marks to the director Vipul Shah for getting the 70s culture bang-on. The retro look and the costumes are relevant and realistic and the performance as expected, is impressive.

Minus points: The movie falls flat when it comes to the humor. It is left to the actors to improvise but with the deadpan lines, they can only try so much. The movie comes to form only when son Bunty does a makeover of his dad Kishen and Akshay emerges in a more elegant avatar as the typical hero with just one thing left to do, tame Aishwarya who has been making his life miserable and turn her into good wifey. Action Replay seriously needed a more tighter, lighter script to keep the laughter flames rising high. Also the silly common man that Akki has been playing in quite a few movies, Welcome, Housefull and Khatta Meetha makes this one look cliché. The music is also a dampener save for one Zor ka jhatka...

Performances: Aishwarya Rai does come with a neat performance and Akshay Kumar, if we were not done with his common man acts before, would hae impressed

Conclusion: Action Replay is just about okay

Sara and Ali Merchant to get married in Bigg Boss house

Looks like Ali Merchant and Sara Khan's marriage is in the Bigg Boss house itself. Ali Merchant made a surprise entry in the Bigg Boss house today. Though it is a done thing that Ali is going to be a guest entry for 10 days, his entry seems to have made everyone particularly Ashmit, wary about talking to Sara. Ali and Dolly Bindra reprimanded Sara Khan for being childish and having made statements like ‘I love you Ashmit’ after which Ali had got 17,600 hate mails against Sara. Realizing how irresponsible she was, Sara started blaming herself.

Veena Malik, meanwhile, took Dolly into confidence and said that she was in love with Hrishant. Dolly was okay with playing cupid and made both Hrishant and Veena sit together for a chat. Veena said that she always considered him special and she was not in a relationship with anyone. Hrishant seemed at loss of words to say anything but said that he is feeling nice that a gorgeous girl like her found him special.

Veena and Dolly Bindra continue their chat where Veena tells that she had just given a shoulder for Ashmit to cry on as he was missing Sara but he ended up doing things to her. Sheepishly, Veena says that if Hrishant does not want so, she will not do such things in the future. Towards the end of the show, we saw Ali Merchant reconciling with Sara and telling her that they will get episode in the Bigg Boss show itself. Read more about Bigg Boss news and updates.
