Sonam Kapoor's diet and fitness secrets

Sonam Kapoor may look slim and sexy but that was not always the case. She was an overweight teenager and then did a turnaround to became pretty as a princess. Here are Sonam Kapoor's weight loss plan, diet and fitness secrets

How Sonam Kapoor turned slim?

In all fairness, it was my mother who helped me get rid of my excess weight.
The first thing she did was to keep me off the stuff I was so fond of as a teenager-chocolates, ice creams, fried foods and sweets. My goal , was to lose 35 kilos.

I started weight training with trainers Shervir and Monisha; artistic yoga and Power Yoga with Bharat Thakur; Pilates with Yasmin Karachiwala and general fitness with trainer Zarine Watson. My training in Kathak helped me too. It's a vigorous form of classical dance and helps you get a toned body.

In addition, Zarine put me on six small meals a day-low on carbs and high on protein. My breakfast consisted of oatmeal and fruits. Post-work-out, I had brown bread with egg whites. Afterwards, it was a protein shake with juice. Lunch comprised dal, sabzi, one ragi roti, salad and a piece of chicken or fish. The evening snack, was high-fibre crackers with chicken cold cuts or egg whites. At dinner, it was soup, salad and a piece of chicken or fish. I followed this routine for a year and lost 35 kilos in all!

How do you keep healthy?

I never binge and eat everything in moderation. Also, I never ignore my cravings. I eat whenever a craving strikes, but in small portions. When I felt like chocolates three weeks ago, I didn't hold back, I took a small piece. When I'm traveling I carry an apple or sandwich or health bars to satisfy myself without piling on excess calories.

My grandmother taught me to sip on warm water first thing in the morning. It flushes out toxins from the system. I follow it up with honey and lime water. Another must for me is a 'no smoking' atmosphere, at home, work or in public places.

Sonam Kapoor likes to eat every two hours
Yeah, looking at my figure people often assume that I don't eat much. On the contrary, I eat every two hours. Since my day is packed with strenuous physical activity-shooting, swimming or dancing-I never allow myself to go hungry for too long. If I feel peckish I snack on nuts and dry fruits.

Drinking plenty of fluids through the day is also a must for me. I drink coconut water every hour or two; it not only quenches my thirst but also helps me feel fun. Other natural drinks such as cucumber juice and buttermilk also help me stay hydrated and keep my energy levels up.

I am quite particular about avoiding fried foods and sweets. Salt and sugar are silent killers so I consume both in moderation by switching to natural sugars and seasoning in my food.

Sonam Kapoor's Fitness Routine?

I was very sporty in school and played rugby, basketball and other games regularly. This has helped me develop flexibility to step in and out of different exercise routines with ease. I feel cardiovascular exercises work best for me in combination with weight training. Each day of the week I focus on a particular body part, such as the abdomen, arms, shoulders or waist.

I do 30 minutes of cardio every day. Two days a week I follow it up with dance exercises learnt from Ashley Lobo. On other days I practice Bharat Thakur's Power Yoga. It is very strenuous but has immense health benefits. In summer, I like to swim as much as I can. Whenever I get the time, I play squash too, which requires a lot of strength. I try to do different workouts and balance them out in order to keep my motivation high; plus mixing exercises helps burn more calories.

What are your learning from your weight-loss journey?

Erratic work schedules often make maintaining your weight difficult. But its possible as long as you eat healthy every day and work out a bit daily. Also its important to undergo a medical check-up to ensure that you haven't put on weight due to a medical condition.

Sonam's food diary

Breakfast
An egg white omlette, a toast, a seasonal fruit, a glass of warm water. When bored with this, I try an idli, or poha.

Lunch
Chicken, rotis, a seasonal vegetable, curd and fruits. I try to avoid red meat. Once in a blue moon, I do have white rice too. My rotis are made of bajra, bran or jowar or any low grade protein-rich wheat. I also have a few cups of tea without sugar through the day.

Dinner
What time I eat dinner is more important than what I eat. I usually have it by 6:30 pm. On most days it is a veg/chicken sandwich, salad and may be some crispy French fries (but not too many!). I also enjoy fish- grilled or cooked in a Spartan gravy. If I still feel hungry then I end my day with a glass of soya milk or a protein shake before going to bed. In addition, I take multi-vitamins.

Cosmetic Surgery Kills Vivek Shauq

Vivek Shauq, the famous character actor and comedian died following a heart attack after liposuction operation. He was 47. Vivek Shauq became famous in popular media for his role as Jaspal Bhatti’s brother-in-law in Flop Show. He then worked in Hindi films and Punjabi films. Among some of his well-known Hindi films, Gadar-Ek PremKatha, Aitraaz, 36 China Town, Hum Ko Deewana Kar Gaye, Asa Nu Maan Watna Da, Dil Hai Tumara, Mini Punjab and Nalaik deserve a special mention.

After undergoing a liposuction operation in Thane, Shauq's condition turned critical. He suffered a heart attack on January 3 and was admitted to Jupiter Hospital in Thane. He was on life support but slipped into a coma and could not be revived. On Monday, the 10th of January, 2011 Shauq died from septicemia.

The doctor at Jupiter Hospital where he was undergoing surgery said that liposuction triggered his heart attack. According to his information, in 2003, Vivek had undergone a major angioplasty operation and three stents were put in his heart. He was prescribed blood thinning medicines Aspirin and Clopidogrel. But he stopped taking them before his liposuction.
Shauq was brought to Jupiter hospital on January 3 after he suffered three cardiac arrests. "His heart had already stopped functioning. Three emergency three shocks had also been given to him. He was on life support system but he went into coma," said Dr. Dayanand Kumbla, another cardiologist there.

As per liposuction surgery rules, prior to the surgery, a complete health history check-up is done. Knowledge of one's allergies, medications and previous surgeries must be brought to the surgeon's notice at this stage.

Shauq underwent a liposuction at the Karkhanis Nursing Home in Thane. When contacted, Dr. Sameer Karkhanis, the plastic surgeon who performed the surgery, said, "Vivek did not reveal anything about his angioplasty and blood thinning medicines prior to the surgery. The ECG and 2D Eco reports showed normal.

Vivek’s close frends in Bollywood were shocked. Bobby Deol said, "I have lost a friend. He was a gem of a person," Akshay Kumar, who was one of Shauq's closest friends, tweeted, "This is a message, actually it's more of a request, for all those who have had the pleasure of knowing and watching Vivek Shauq.

Salman Khan will not forgive Shah Rukh Khan, Forgives Vivek Oberoi

Salman Khan, the most popular Bollywood actor now, has said that he will not forgive Shah Rukh Khan. He has also said that he would stay away from people like Shah Rukh. At the same time, Salman has forgiven Vivek Oberoi. Excerpts from the interview:

Shah Rukh Khan said on Karan Johar’s show that he is responsible for the problems between both of you. So can we see a patch up between both of you happening this year?
He passes my house around four times a day to get anywhere and to return from wherever he goes. If he wanted a patch up why would he say it on a TV show?

Vivek Oberoi also apologised…?
I forgave him because you know whether someone is serious or not in wanting to apologise and whether he seriously felt bad for his actions. I felt this (Shah Rukh’s) apology came only to increase TRPs of the show.

So will you only forgive him if Shah Rukh comes to you and apologises?
I would rather stay away from such people.

Are you going to drink coffee with Karan Johar on his TV show?
Nothing has been decided as yet.

You recently won your first best actor award. Comment?
Well, I do not have anything in me which qualifies me to get a Best Actor award. I, in fact, implore people not to even nominate me for such awards. The love of my fans is enough for me.

Does this mean that you have no regrets that you never got an award till date?
If I had really wanted awards, I would not have missed out on a single award till date. Even you know what kind of things people do to get awards. I do not need to elaborate on this. So if people are getting awards, they deserve it.

There are a lot of people who are saying that “Dabangg” being a hit is not a very good sign for cinema.
See, we are here to make movies to entertain people. We are not here to make movies for ourselves. If we want to make the kind of movies we want, then we should not waste the producer’s money. If someone wants to merely give out a message there are other ways of doing it.

What was the experience of hosting “Bigg Boss 4” like?
It is a great experience. I was initially a bit scared because I wasn’t too sure about the kind of people who would be coming on the show. But at the end of the day, it was a good one. Once the show started things were in. Be it a celebrity or a common man, it is their real personality that emerges out in a show of this nature.

What have you learnt from this show?
Well, I have learnt to come on time by doing this show.

Manoj Tiwari made some accusations against you. He said that you were the one responsible for his ouster and you played an active role in eliminating him from the show. Commen
t.

I think that Manoj’s ego her been bruised badly. He feels that he cannot be voted out as he has a huge fan base. He felt that everyone else in the show would be eliminated, but he would have to be there till the end. However, that was not to be.

He also felt that the kind of money other people who are there on the show make is what he pays his servants. Well, there is someone called God who is right up there and has been watching all this.

Manoj was upset with the fact that he lost to Ashmit Patel, as he felt he was far superior to him and far more popular than him.

It is not at all mature to blame me or someone else for his failure. His real personality is now in front of everyone. If he did not have any ego problems, perhaps he would not have been out of the house.

Who are your favourite contestants on this “Bigg Boss 4”?
Manoj Tiwari. (laughs) It is actually Seema Parihar, but then she has been eliminated.

There was a lot of commotion due to the kind of content on “Bigg Boss 4”. Your take?

Well there are a lot of shows on TV which are very vulgar in terms of content. There are several expletives which are mouthed on the show, but then they are beeped out. I do not think there is anything wrong with the content on “Bigg Boss 4”.

A lot of people in the film industry now say that you have become very punctual and your image too has undergone a sea of change in the media. What do you attribute this to?

I am exactly the way I was. I have not changed. Yes, but then I have become punctual at my shoots and it is very important.

I have always been very professional about my work. But then professionalism is not to be measured only on the basis whether someone is punctual or not.

No One Killed Jessica Movie Review: Bold and Beautiful

What a way to start New Year 2011. No One Killed Jessica is powerful cinema, just the way as one expected it to be. Director Rajkumar Gupta who directed the fantastic ‘Aamir’ shows that the first one was no fluke. A movie based on the story of the murder of Jessica Lal at the Delhi nightclub in 1999 and the subsequent case, No One Killed Jessica stays as realistic as possible, peppered with some entertaining ‘to the gallery’ elements.

Story of No One Killed Jessica: Though this subject of a girl being murdered when she denied to offer drinks was covered in movies like Madhur Bhandarkar’s Satta and Raj Kumar Santoshi’s Halla Bol, they were always used to move the plot ahead rather than being the heart of the matter. No One Killed Jessica begins with Meera Gaity (Rani Mukherji) who introduces life in Delhi where a tussle in the streets can have fatal repercussions to a person on the receiving end of someone who has political connections.

Sabrina Lal(Vidya) wakes up one night from a call that tells her that her sister has been shot at a party, just because she refused to serve drinks to a politician’s son. Sabrina finds it to her shock that the law is just a puppet in the hands of Manish (her sister’s murderer) and her father who has a lot of clout. Evidences are tampered, witnesses are bought, the police is bribed and investigations are stopped.

Meera (Rani Mukherji) who had once not given much of an importance to the case finally decides to take it up, and plunges head-on, especially when she comes to know that Manish has been acquitted from the case, almost seven years later after the incident She then does a series of investigations, fuels a mass public movement that results in public outcry. The case reopens and Manish is sentenced for life.

Plus points of No One Killed Jessica: Rajkumar Gupta showed that he knows his cinema really well with Aamir. Though Aamir was a remake of Cavite, No One Killed Jessica is a representation of a real life incident, a case that is one of the biggest example of public driven justice. Check out list of Bollywood films plagiarized from Hollywood.

Though the first half is a bit slow, the second half is quite explosive as Rani’s character goes full throttle. The dialogues are acidic and in-your-face, nothing filmi here. The editing is slick and the music by Amit Trivedi is a winner.
RajKumar Gupta has taken cinematic liberties in No One Killed Jessica, specially in the second half. Rani’s character is totally fictionalized, the police inspector who is investigating and the names of the characters are fake, but for a reason.

There are some tight close-ups in the scenes, the kind you see in Ram Gopal Varma’s films. It is nice to see UTV using some intelligence and putting the Rang De Basanti scene in the film. After all, Rang De Basanti’s candle-lit march scene did have an influence as a catalyst in reopening the Jessica Lal case.

Best scenes in No One Killed Jessica: There are some very good scenes in the film that can leave an impact . Special mentions being the shooting incident, the drama in the court, Sabrina Lal’s mental conflict specially when she is not able to see an elephant ahead of her, as she is lost in her thoughts, her meeting with Manu Sharma’s family, and of course, the Rani Mukherji’s ‘Gaand Fatke Haath Main Aathi’ scene. It is very good to see that the director has employed metaphoric techniques in the film to make the scenes imaginative, which are anyway short and crisp.

Performances in No One Killed Jessica: Vidya Balan is outstanding in the role of Sabrina Lal. She has shown the vulnerability of a woman who is helpless as a commoner in the face of elements that are trying to subterfuge the case. Rani on the other hand, signifies the vitriolic entity, which is rebellious enough to give it back to those very elements. Both the ladies are in top form. In this performance oriented cinema, you see some shining performances by almost everyone in the project.

Mohammed Zeeshan Ayub not only looks like Manu Sharma, he plays the role very well. Neil Bhoopalam as the prime ‘hostile’ witness in the case and Rajesh Sharma as inspector-in-charge also perform very well . A noteworthy mention should be about Myra, who plays Jessica Lal aptly.

Conclusion: No One Killed Jessica is an amazing movie, not to be missed.
Rating:****(Very Good)

Vidya Balan best Bollywood Actress in 2011?

Vidya Balan's best performance till date should be in 2011. Birthday day girl Vidya Balan, who turns 33 on January 1, 2011, definitely has two very good movies for her. While No One Killed Jessica will see her performing to the optimum, she will surely impress in The Dirty Picture, a movie based on the life of Silk Smitha.

Vidya Balan showed her acting prowess every time she has been on screen. To use Vidya's quote 'acting is all about stirring emotions' and she has been stirring every emotion so well: from making you fall in love with her in Parineeta and Lagey Raho Munnabhai, to making you aroused in Ishqiya to making you feel the pain and loss of the loved one in No One Killed Jessica. Of course how can one forget her brilliant performance as a single mother of a Progeria stricken child in Paa? Happy Birthday to Vidya Balan and wishing each one of you a very happy new year from Bollywood Trends.
