Shah Rukh Khan speaks about Saurav Ganguly, IPL and Ra. One

Shah Rukh Khan reveals why Ganguly was dropped out of Kolkata Knight Riders and his marketing for Ra.
On his equation with Ganguly:

They should be good. He is a very mature guy. So am I, in a way I think. I have left everything of the cricketing to the CEO and the coach. We’ve played three years, and played really poorly for whatever reasons. I am not getting into that as they are just excuses. Fact is, we as a team played poorly. When I say we, I mean the team, the management and the coaches.

And we made a lot of promises but it didn’t work. You know filmmakers who make certain kind of films, suddenly change and do something different. I am not comparing but Raj Kapoor saab made Mera Naam Joker and then he made Bobby. It’s an attempt to redo something. The first step was that I removed myself totally from the team. When I come in, too much emotional bonding happens, so I decided to stay away. I got the team, coach and the CEO to take the cricket decisions. I just didn’t want to get into it, I said ‘You guys go, select the team, just leave me out and try to save a little more money than we did last year because it’s become very expensive!’ They said, just leave it to us. Some of the decisions were very harsh...

On dropping Saurav Ganguly
That was one. They asked me for my take on their decisions, and I told them, ‘Look if you ask me then I am part of this. And then I would like to say who should be in the team.

And Dada should be in the team. But if you don’t ask me and if I am out of this, then I am out of this completely.’ First the management asked Dada if he could be part of the team as a mentor, as an ambassador, and then even I asked him, but he is still keen to play the game, and so should he. But in our scheme of things I think it is a very radical, big decision. I still would personally like him to play for us, but I don’t know if the rulings allow. But I will speak to him again soon, I have been out of the country a lot shooting, and now I have finished both films on hand, so it’s time to look into other things.

Why is Ra.One superhero film?
The whole idea is to create an Indian superhero. I think Krissh did that, Drona did that to an extent. Everyone needs to keep pushing the envelope. Why India being the biggest movie-making nation, doesn’t have this genre? Why don’t we make films with VFX?

You’ve shown bits of the film to people... What’s been the reaction?
I showed them to some people last night. Karan said some of his actors who saw it, are now dying to see the film.

What about your son Aryan?
He has got a lot of issues because the VFX is still to be done. When he sees it, he points out unfinished things. I have shown it to his friends. They kind of like it. The only thing is, it is not so advanced as B-A-T-M-A-N because of the paucity of the funds. It is much less than that. But the VFX is as clean as you see in a west film. And it’s entirely done in India. When people see the film I want them to ask, ‘Arre kahan kiya yeh.’ And someone will say, ‘Yahaan Andheri mein.’ I want other actors, who can afford to make such films, to make it. Which is why I want it to do well. I know Hrithik is also making a superhero film, and I always ask him, ‘Can I help you with something? Do you want any inputs from me?’ I really want this genre to come through.

Ra.One is releasing in October, isn’t it too early to start promoting it?
It is too early, but I think it is important for this genre. When we go to see a Spiderman film, we know who he is, and what his powers are. Likewise with Superman and Batman. I want G.One (the protagonist) to become someone you start recognising before you come to see the film. We want to start telling the audiences that he flies, is made up of electricity and wears a blue suit. I would like kids to ask, ‘How high can he fly, and how hard can he hit?’ By the time the film comes, those questions should’ve been answered.

You are not doing the title role in your film?
Lot of people tell me you should’ve called the film G.One, but for me Jeevan is a little attached to seventies. The present generation might not know him. I asked Aryan if he found the title G.One strange, he said ‘No, it is like F1.’ But I personally didn’t like it. I liked the idea behind why it is called Ra.One. When you write a computer program, you write Random Access Version 1. So the reason behind it is very cool, even though a film had come by the same name. All my friends said that Raavan came and went, and that I should change my title. They said I am making a big mistake. (laughs) Maybe I will call the sequel G.One.

You are aware it’s being said you are ghost directing the film?
I will be honest, I work on my films a lot in co-ordination with the director, and I have done that for 20 years. When I did Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, it was said that Yashji was really directing it and that Aditya Chopra was just a front. When I did Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, it was said Aditya Chopra was making it, and Karan was just a front. When I did Farah Khan’s first film, it was said I was directing it, and she was just a front. I am not going to stick to the director if I have to direct the film. It’s entirely Anubhav’s story, and entirely his film. I have directed it as much as I have directed any of my other films. I have an input and I think I am an intelligent guy, so I say ‘Aise kar lete hain.’ But I’ve never directed any film, and I don’t want to.

Did you realise it would be so expensive going in?
I knew it was always going to be an expensive film, but it has gone up by nearly thirty per cent. However that happens with any film. When we started, I also wondered if we can do such an expensive film, but I got a little encouraged when Om Shanti Om sold a little well. I went ahead thinking so if it sells for this much, theek hai ya phir 8-10 crore ka nuksaan hoga ya faida hoga, jo bhi hai. It is a little above my capability budgetwise, but we pulled it off. I have worked a lot for three months. I have attended all the marriages, all the award functions and...
Did a TV show...
Yes, and my TV show. I have done everything. My Ra.One is made through all that.

Why did you accept a show like Zor Ka Jhatka?
Sameer (Nair) is an old friend and I think the reasons for getting me on it were, first I was available and second, it was a short term show. I think very generously they also knew where it was going to go. It wasn’t like anyone had unrealistic expectations because it was that genre of a show. It was not a dance show, it’s fun, it’s niche, a little over the top, and it’s meant to be like that. I like the show, and I was convinced about it. But it’s not the kind of show that attracts large eyeballs. In my mind I knew that it is not a path-breaking show. Even internationally, it has select audience like children.

You are wooing kids even in Ra.One. Was ZKJ just an extension of that?
No. That kind of marketing I didn’t think of. (smiles)

Bollywood in Hollywood Library is no Big Deal

Bollywood filmmakers proudly claim that their film has been selected to be part of the Oscar library. This is NOT the equivalent of winning an Oscar. Or anything to be really happy about.

The truth is any films that is released in the US automatically becomes a part of the Academy's library. It is not distinction but merely a formal official procedure to keep records of the movies releases. So even if a B-grade Bollywood movie releases in the US, its records will be kept by the Oscars. So dear Sanjay Leela Bhansali, Karan Johar, Ashutosh Gowariker, your Guzaarish, My Name is Khan and Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se respectively, have not really scored a whammy by being a part of the Oscar library.

Payal Rohatgi accuses Dibakar Banerjee of Casting Couch

Payal Rohatgi has accused the director of Love Sex aur Dhokha, Dibakar Banerjee of sexual advances towards her. Recently discharged from a nursing home where she was being treated for depression, Payal has wanted to open her heart out about the director and now it seems she is ready to talk about their fourth month friendship and what went wrong.

Payal says a few months ago she sent an SMS to Dibakar, introducing herself and asking to meet him. According to her, since then they've been friends. "You could also call him a mentor." She adds they'd often talk about relationships – his and hers. "I spoke about my problems (split with Rahul Mahajan), and he'd talk about his marriage not working. He advised me to see a psychiatrist from Bombay Hospital, someone whom he sees to discuss his inability to be monogamous and his need for multiple affairs." She admits not minding being agony aunt to him.

Things changed after she auditioned for a role for his upcoming film, Shanghai. "I mentioned to him that I want to act, and asked for a role in his film. He asked me to meet Atul Mongia, his casting director. The scene required me to react to the news about my husband's murder. I think I gave my best because I cried my heart out. After the audition I messaged Dibakar, and he asked me how I was feeling. I told him I was very low because to portray the grief I'd imagined my mother dying." She claims he then offered to come to her house. "He'd been over before and we've hung out but he never misbehaved with me. So, I agreed. When he came, he commented that I had put on weight. I was puzzled. He then asked me to lift my shirt and show him my stomach. I got pissed-off. I told him not joke around as I was feeling low. I said to him, 'Let me be, and please leave.' And he left."

She says after that whenever she tried to call the director, he never took her calls. "After the positive feedback on the day of the audition, I was surprised when the casting director told me that Dibakar and the core crew preferred another girl. I messaged him requesting him to give me the role and that I was ready to do a two-day workshop, and also do a second audition. No revertal, no reply, nothing from this man who'd call me at least 20 times a month," she says in a high pitch. She says this behaviour from 'a friend' devastated her. She continues, "This must have happened to me before. But never from a friend. You can't fuck your buddy, if you are giving her a role!"

What Dibakar has to say...

The meeting: Payal contacted me first around March 2010 through many texts and phonecalls of an over familiar nature. She said she wanted to act in meaningful films rather than do item numbers. Upon her repeated insistence I met her at a Business Centre of a Five Star hotel in a business environment.

There I impressed that the ONLY way to act in my film would be to pass a screen test. Because her texts were flirtatious I clarified in a frank and forthright way – that if I were to ever cheat on my marriage, I would rather have an extra marital affair with a non actor than ask for sexual favours in return for a role as that would really go against my deepest principles. After that there were many calls and texts asking for professional advice. I learnt other directors had got similar calls too. However giving her benefit of doubt I referred her to my casting and workshop director whom she contacted.

The counselling session: After which there were many phone calls where she sought advice on a personal front. Realizing that she was a deeply troubled person I recommended acting teachers, playgroups, theatre workshops and a personal counselor to her. This counselor was someone I had consulted, during my darkest hours in 2004 when Khosla was not releasing and there had been a death in the family. This is no secret. Many of my friends, colleagues and my wife know about it. This was told to Payal as a way of telling her that all bad patches can be overcome if one is determined.

The screen test: She contacted me in early 2011. I told her to test for Shanghai by contacting my casting director. She insisted on meeting him and me for workshops before testing. I did not meet her in any way during this period though she called me for advice a few times. After testing for the role, she called him and me many times in a disturbed state. Apparently the testing for the role of a bereaved wife had seriously unsettled her. I told her to get on out and meet friends. I was on my way to a colleague's studio and she insisted on coming there, to presumably to talk to me about the test and cheer up. She also insisted that I pick her up. I was unwise enough to accede.

The meeting at her house: When I reached her place, she asked me up as she would take five minutes. I was barely there for a few minutes and my driver can affirm that. Nothing of any sexual, exploitative or suggestive nature transpired – I'm willing to swear in court to that. After which I escorted her to the studio, where an hour-long happy interaction with people present, while I withdrew to work. This is where the conversation about her weight took place! My colleague remembers it! And there was no request to lift her top – but a discussion on the weight of the character she was testing for! She started texting me shortly after this, asking about the screen test results. I texted her to please check with my casting director, as is my policy. Upon which the texts again became insistent and troubled. This time I took a call as this repetitive pattern of help-anxiety-help was taking its toll. I decided to end communication.

After ending communication: Her texts became angrier, more disturbed. She called me and my casting director in the middle of the night in an angry state. Then all communication stopped. The screen test cue sheet proves the date is 7th February. Why does one take so long to ask redressal? During this clarification you will note that I have not betrayed the many details of Payal's confidential life that she narrated to me while asking for advice. My cardinal mistake has been to take her aim to act in meaningful roles sincerely. And in my well-meaningness and well known practice of being cordial and respectful to all who approach me, misjudged her desperation and level of disturbance and the length she's willing to go to damage a well wisher who just happened to give her a screen test and then not find her suitable.

Aamir Khan's Birthday: Age is just a number for this genius

Today is Aamir Khan’s birthday but by the looks of it, this is one of his busiest birthdays. He is shooting for shooting for Reema Kagti's suspense thriller, building body for Aditya Chopra's Dhoom-3 and getting ready with the marketing and promotion of Delhi Belly. Here is the interview with Aamir Khan where he talks about what he is doing now and his future plans

So who is it with you in Dhoom-3? Katrina Kaif, Priyanka Chopra or Deepika Padukone?
Dhoom-3 will roll in January 2012. I'm only building my physique for it from now on. And why are you assuming that I'm involved in the casting. Aditya Chopra and Vijay Acharya Krishna (Victor) will select the heroine. I have no say in the matter.

In an Aamir film, Aamir normally has all the say...
Yaar nahin, I'm only an actor on set. I'm an obsessive actor but nothing more. Right now, I'm totally preoccupied with Reema's film. It is a genre that neither I nor anyone else has dabbled in for a long time. It's also got a strong emotional core.

And, it has no title?
Yeah, if someone gives me a title for Reema's film, it will be the best birthday gift I receive today.

Heard you are learning to swim?
Yes, in fact I've enrolled for swimming lessons with Mickey Mehta. I have to swim in Reema's film. Actually I'm very excited about this one. After 3-Idiots this is my next film. I was in Dhobi Ghaat, but it was more Kiran's movie.

You also have conversations only in Marathi?
With my staff I only speak in Marathi. My teacher Suhas Limaye says that it is the best way to polish my language. I have poor language skills; I'm a little slow but I am thoroughly enjoying speaking the language.

What's this cooking thing you are getting into?
Cooking is also something I want to learn. Honestly, I haven't started.

One hears Kiran and you have moved into your mother's house?
Yes, Kiran and I are now sleeping in the bedroom where I spent my childhood. My mother has come to live in my building; Kiran and I have moved upstairs to her home. Our things are still in our home downstairs but we sleep and wake up in mom's house. After pack up, I go straight to mom's house and I am with her till bedtime.

What according to you is your biggest achievement in the year gone by?
I have given the industry two women directors-Anusha Rizvi (Peepli Live) and Kiran Rao (Dhobi Ghat). I've supported talent that I believe in and I have also shown that art house movies which earlier collected two-three crores can collect as much as 15 crore-plus.

Is Delhi Belly also art-house?
No. It is a kameena commercial film.

Are Shah Rukh, Salman and you still the front-runners?
I don't know about being number 1 or 2; I'm excited about my success. My fans are happy to see everything that I put out there in the market. That's immensely gratifying.

Do you feel any different at 46 than you felt at 40?
Frankly, age is just a number. Physically, no one can counter age; to me it has never mattered. Goals can be achieved even when you are 90. The audience doesn't ask an actor's age when it comes to seeing his film.

Anurag Kashyap ridicules Salman, Arbaaz Khan

The always frank Anurag Kashyap focused his ire on Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan, albeit sarcastically. He put this status on his social networking site profile “Salman Khan thinks he made my brother’s life. Hope he does the same for when he does Dabangg 2. All the Best.”

A few minutes later, he posted another message “Abhinav Singh Kashyap…you rock…I love you..Show them what you are made of.” The “them” obviously means the Khan brothers. Anurag Kashyap’s outburst against Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan comes close on the heels of the news of producer Arbaaz Khan directing the sequel of Dabangg.

Both Arbaaz and Anurag Kashyap are infamously known for ridiculing people online, with a reason, of course. While Arbaaz Khan openly taunted Shobhaa De for picking on his film, Anurag Kashyap had attacked Amitabh Bachchan for manipulating movie releases.

Coming to this point, Arbaaz Khan had revealed on Twitter, “Hey guys, it is true. I will be directed the sequel of Dbangg. Abhinav for personal and professional reasons has opted out.” It is known that both Abhinav and Salman had issues during the making of Dabangg but once the film became a megahit, all was forgotten when awards and rewards began streaming in. But things have resurfaced when Dabangg 2 is on the anvil. But Abhinav began to get a feeling of déjà vu again when the movie was on the scripting stage and backed off.

Anurag has denied that there is an film to be made with SRK and he said his reason for backing out of Dabangg 2 was a well thought one, which Arbaaz had respected. “If Dabangg 2 worked, them I would have to make Dabangg 3. But if it fails, then you would all write that I was a one-film wonder,” he said.

Here is now an exchange of verbal volleys between Arbaaz Khan and Anurag Kashyap

Arbaaz Khan through Twitter: : Salman Khan has already made my life with Dabangg and I appreciate it. I don't need Dabangg 2 for that. We gave Abhinav an opportunity. Why wasn't Anurag backing his brother at that time? Where was he when his brother was doing rounds of the industry with his script for two years?"As soon as I got Salman's dates, I called Abhinav up to start work on it. Out of nowhere, he sends me a text saying he is opting out, without offering a reason. In any case, I am glad it happened now, rather than later."

Anurag Kashyap: (volte-face, anyone?) I wish them luck. I am thankful they gave my brother the break. I apologise to everyone(for the earlier comment). I was drunk and upset at the time. In reply to Arbaaz, the reason I didn't support Abhinav is because my brother wanted to make it on his own without my help.

Abhinav(on being told about the rift between brother Anurag and friend Arbaaz)
: It's unfortunate. This is the first I'm hearing of it (from you). I told my dad that I opted out of Dabangg but not my brother (as he was shooting in Benares). Anurag is emotional and has over reacted.

He didn't know why I am not part of the sequel. When I told him why, he immediately deleted the comment from Facebook and Twitter." I hold no malice towards Arbaaz Khan. I am grateful for a great opportunity. I opted out of the film for personal reasons and it's very gracious of Arbaaz for having understood that. I had a word with Arbaaz, too. It was a misunderstanding that is now sorted out. I hope it is not held against me."

Though both the producer and the director have maintained that they have parted amicably, Anurag Kashyap’s outburst on Facebook against Salman Khan and Arbaaz Khan has opened a new can of worms. Do you think, that there is more than what meets the eye?
