Bollywood has Hollywood standard technology but no money

Creative art director and production designer Sabu Cyril who has engineered technology in movies like Robot, Ra. One, Krrish feels Bollywood can make Hollywood standard technical proficient movies but lack budget allocation. Here is an interview with Sabu Cyril who is also doing art direction for Agneepath-The Revival, Krrish 3 and Tezz (Priyadarshan's next thriller)

Ra.One is one of the biggest releases of the year, a mega-massive budget action flick. What does it have that we haven’t seen before?

It is Shah Rukh’s brainchild and technologically speaking, very advanced. You will see things you haven’t seen before. Don’t you think the money on Robot was justified? Trust me, so is the money spent on Ra.One. These levels of technology and effects require this much money.

You’ve covered the entire gamut of films from drama, action, hard-core masala ones. What do you look for before you sign up for a project?

The work has to be challenging. That’s my first and only priority. I started out with no intention of being in films. It was purely accidental. I was based in Chennai running a graphic designing studio.

A friend of mine put me on to someone who wanted to replicate a helicopter going up and down on flash. That led me to some other movies, some advertisements and before I knew it, I was a full-fledged art director without any experience in the area.

My thrill is to make mechanical parts move, make a set look seamless, recreate impossible locations like I did in Yuva, where I created Kolkata in the middle of Chennai; or in Don, where I created Mahalaxmi’s Dhobi Ghat in Chennai. I need that thrill.

Be it dramas such as Gardish, and Viraasat, masala movies such as Tees Maar Khan, sci-fi, or period films, I just need a subject that pushes me harder and further.

From period films such as Kaala Paani and Asoka, to futuristic films such as Robot and Krrish, where does your your creativity lie, in the art or the mechanics of it?

I studied Visual communication and like a true Aquarian, was interested in everything from art and design, sketching, clay work, architecture, to the simple and complex mechanics of how things worked. Fortunately for me, my profession allows me to play with it all.

Period films require a lot of research and referencing. There’s a lot of material out there and you have to recreate it. Materials, costumes, artifacts; authenticity is key.

Futuristic films toy with your imagination. It’s about creating something entirely new, anticipating 50-100 years into the future. When we imagine the future, we picture flying cars, teleportation, supersonic speeds. 2001: A Space Odyssey, made in 1968, imagined anti-gravity to the T.

The older Bond movies had the foresight and creativity to surprise. One has to imagine it all. There’s only so much referencing that can be done for a time that doesn't exist. The future is definitely more challenging.

The director and the production designer have a lot of overlapping jurisdictions. Composition, camera, themes... is it challenging to be constantly creatively synchronized?
The director has a clear vision of what he wants to make. I follow. I have my own ideas and people want me on board for what I can imagine and do. But it’s essential to be in tune with his vision. Also, its team work and a lot of people are consulted. Occasionally, it can get difficult if you have very different sensibilities.

Have the sensibilities and technology of Indian film-making caught up with Hollywood?

The technology is there, but the money is not. You make a movie for the masses, and for them, the special effects and sets are not as important as the subject and stars.

Producers accordingly allocate the money. It’s a lot better than the South, where art gets negligible budgets.

New-age directors and filmmakers understand the importance of what high-end technical work can do for a movie and are generous with their budgets. Competition is key too. If there was no competition, Doordarshan would have continued to remain tacky.

But it’s important that money isn’t wasted. For Robot, we approached a studio in LA to make us two robots. They gave us a budget of Rs 5 crore. I told the director I’ll do it for cheaper.
Instead of cables, puppetry, rails, etc like them, I just dressed up two dwarfs for Rs 5 lakh. Sometimes, it’s not about putting in more money, it’s about being creative and judicious with it.

The brilliance in your work lies when audiences don’t realise what you’ve done. Do you miss out on getting your due as a result?

It’s an occupational hazard. Like a magician that tricks children at magic shows, for me, the kick is when I manage to trick grown-ups into thinking things are real. That’s the fun.

I once made a temple set in Chennai for a film that looked so original that people would take off their shoes outside and locals would come to pray every evening. I missed out on an award for that film because the jury thought the temple was real! But yes, some films give me more in return than others.

My work in Kaala Paani, recreating the whole cellular jail, it’s gratifying because it was so well exploited in the film. I put in a lot of effort in Hey Ram, but it went mostly unrecognized. It’s like labour pain, so much effort goes into getting something right, but it’s soon forgotten in light of the finished product.

Priyadarshan and you have done over 92 projects together. What's the story?

On our first meeting, we went out for a drink and he told me, the day you find someone better to work with, you carry on and the day I find a better art director, I'll move on. Until then, let’s try and impress each other. We’re still at it and it’s been fantastic.

Farhan Akhtar will not act in a film that he directs

In this candid film, Farhan Akhtar, the multi-talented person talks about movies, his personal life and about where he got his impeccable style of dress from, and of course, the Farhan Akhtar hairstyle which changes continuously

What was the cast selection process for Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD)?

I did not cast myself in it (laughs). Zoya wanted me. I play the joker in the gang. She wrote this film with my real personality in mind.

Which is…?

Zoya knows me well and that is something that I am working very hard on. I guess I need therapy to try and change (smiles). I try to laugh of all the stress in my life, if any. It defers dealing with the issue in question.

Going back to the casting, was it always you, Hrithik Roshan and Abhay Deol in the film?

No. Initially, Zoya wanted Ranbir Kapoor, Imran Khan and me. But things didn’t fall in place with them.

You appear to be very excited about ZNMD.

Well, we boys got along really well. When you see the film, it would give you a sense that these three have been friends for a while. I was really impressed by Katrina. When she came into the picture, I felt that the dynamics might change. But she is such an easy-going girl. I was very impressed by her.

With Abhay, of course, we needed to know each other. You see, ZNMD is all about bonding. So, we spent a lot of time cycling and scuba diving, before we actually went on the sets. It was very important for us three guys to really know each other. If you say something relatively obnoxious to someone, you know which friend will laugh and which friend will say, ‘Aise mat bol yaar’.

If your film doesn’t do well at the box-office, say like Karthik Calling Karthik, how do you feel?

I am human after all and so is everyone involved with the film. There is definitely a sense of disappointment. No one starts a film saying if it doesn’t do well, I don’t care. Whether it’s a broken relationship or friendship, you try and do your best the next time out. The same applies to movies.

You have a rather impeccable style of dressing. It is quite formal…

I think that’s because it is so rare. But I have no idea where it comes from. I’m not someone, who reads fashion magazines and tears of images of the suits I like (laughs).

Weirdly enough, I am not fussy about what I wear but at the same time, I’m fussy about what I buy. The important thing for me is to be clean and hygienic, maybe it comes from my Parsi side. Let me tell you little more on this. I just change my wardrobe, once every three years when I get bored. That trait also reflects on the fact that I keep changing my hairstyles at regular intervals (smiles).

Would you sign assignments outside of your banner?

I am okay with acting, on any film, with any producer, if the script is good. As far as singing goes, I don’t think of it as another vocation. Singing is kind of a personal thing.

Is this similar to Himesh Reshammiya, who wanted to sing only for himself?

Personally, I don’t know Himesh that well or what his philosophies in life are.

How do you deal with link-ups? You have recently been linked to Deepika Padukone and then to an assistant director on ZNMD…

It is upsetting when someone writes something completely pointless about you. It’s irresponsible, to say the least.

Does it stir up a whirlwind at home?

Fortunately, these things do not shake my ties at home. They know I am here not to have a great time and exploit my position. I’m thankful that this understanding and trust exists. Eventually, they get over it. For me, more than my wife, my mom or any body else, I have kids who don’t understand what’s going on in terms of what the world is like.

I mean, there’s no censorship on who can read what is in the newspaper. My 11-year-old daughter picks up the paper and reads that her father is having an affair with someone. They internalize things and to me that’s more upsetting than anything else.

We hear you got concessions in Germany while shooting Don 2 since Shah Rukh was on-board?

In Germany, there is a board that helps make shoots easier. When they know you come from an organized industry and what that does for Berlin and vice-versa in terms of employing their people, then they step in to help. There are certain concessions that you can get. And well, Shah Rukh has a huge fan following in Germany, not just with the Indians there but also the Germans. It’s amazing to witness the craze they have for him. So, there is a certain ease that comes.

Is Don a franchise now? And weren’t you tempted to act in it?

I don’t know. It remains to be seen. Honestly, I had to retract myself. If you recall, I had said that I wouldn’t make Don 2. But now I am doing it. Never say never. For the second part of your question, it’s a clear ‘No’. I shall not act in a film that I direct.

Lara Dutta Pregnant?

Lara Dutta is pregnant according to reports. This news comes close to the news of Aishwarya Rai being pregnant. Suddenly, Bollywood is blessed with pregnant happiness. Mandira Bedi and Konkona Sen Sharma were blessed with their first-borns recently and there has been a considerable  amount of curiosity over Shilpa Shetty's frequent visit to a gynaecologist in Bandra recently.

The news of Lara's pregnancy have hit the world just after Aishwarya Rai- Bachchan broke the big news of expecting her first child in November. Lara and Mahesh prefer to take things as they come. They are both quite occupied with work in their respective areas, but at the same time they feel the time is ripe for them to have a child," a friend of the couple said. Lara has just finished shooting for Farhan Akhtar's Don 2, starring Shah Rukh Khan and Priyanka Chopra.

By the way, Lara did not sign any new film after Don 2. Her only film in hand is the long-stuck, Govinda-starrer, Banda Yeh Bindaas Hai, but Lara has already wound up the shooting of the film. Sources said Lara and Mahesh consider it ominous to make known the good news to the world at such an early stage, and will wait for at least three months before they make the news official.

"As of now, even if the pregnancy is confirmed, they would want to stay silent on the issue. Lara and Mahesh feel they should make the news public only when the time is correct," the source said. She had also been to her parents' to take rest, giving way to the speculations of her pregnancy.

Lara was about to announce her next production after Chalo Dilli soon, but those plans are now stalled as she is pregnant, according to a source. Incidentally, Lara was supposed to launch her second film as producer soon after Chalo Dilli released in April, but she did not go about it then.

Aamir Khan on marketing films-Delhi Belly to Qayamat se Qayamat Tak

Aamir Khan's marketing genius has always been the precursor for his movies going for box office history. He is able to raise the curiosity value of the film and does a pretty good of branding his films very well.

That's Aamir Khan for you, he knows exactly when to push (remember 2008, when Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi was releasing and every usher and ticketing clerk in almost every multiplex in the country did their jobs with Ghajini haircuts?), and when to hold back.

Incidentally, the name of the person who suggested the Ghajini haircut for ushers, an IIM worthy idea, will never be known. While his marketing and PR team say it was Aamir, the actor denies it, pointing out that "I'm sure I would have remembered if it had been my idea."

Ask him if his biggest marketing success has been himself, Aamir Khan the brand, nephew Imran Khan, or one of his films, and he dismisses the first two options saying, "I have never marketed Aamir Khan the person. I am as I am.

And I didn't market Imran; I marketed his film Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na, just as I marketed Prateik with Dhobi Ghaat. I would say the tough ones to market were Taare Zameen Par and Peepli Live because Taare... was about children and education, and Peepli a social political satire with an all new cast."

Failure, for him, would have to be Mangal Pandey, not because the film failed but because it raised the wrong expectations. "The marketing gave the impression it was a patriotic film about one person, when actually it was a story about two people - Mangal Pandey and Captain Gordon - and their friendship and a failed revolution," he says.

"I was having a release after four years, and we got carried away by that fact. All the promos were about me, which further strengthened the impression that it was about Mangal Pandey alone. So though we got a great opening, our marketing was a huge failure."

And while Aamir's marketing strategies have spawned an IIM case study, he confesses to a fascination for the intangibles. "Marketing is just an extension of the storytelling that the film is," he begins, and then getting increasingly animated he adds, "You know how we say the audience smells out a film? What does it smell? That's an intangible.

But if you are excited about what you have to tell, the manner in which you reach out to people will touch them on an intangible level. The excitement in your voice, in your marketing plan, will communicate itself to the audience without you being aware of it. There is some intangible thing that gets communicated in the market."

Aamir might pooh-pooh away any mantle about being a pioneer in the field saying, "Lots of producers such as Raj Kapoor and Subhash Ghai marketed their films excellently," but Anirban Das Blah, MD of KWAN Entertainment and Marketing Solutions, has a different take on it.

"Aamir Khan and the distributors transformed the Indian marketplace with Ghajini," he says. "At a time when a really successful film did a business of Rs 70 to 80 crore, they came with this Rs 200-crore film, a quantum leap.

Since then, the most successful films have been those that do roughly the same amount of business. When a film does Rs 500 crore, that's when an earthquake will strike again and a new benchmark will be set.

Aamir understands everything to do with marketing - be it PR, events or the advertising. When he signs a film, there is just so much anticipation and that is the brilliant marketing of Brand Aamir."

According to Aamir, he has been involved in the marketing of his films right from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak, but "it's in the last five years or so, more accurately from Taare..., that I have matured in my approach, in my understanding of the medium and the various platforms and my ability to use them for the benefit of the film." Happily for Aamir, this has also been the time when the opening weekend has become all important for the film's success and good marketing guarantees that.

But what is this marketing that Aamir knows? The man himself has no definite answers. "It just happens organically," he tries to explain. "You know how a good cook can never actually tell you how much of what goes into a dish? Marketing is like that. It's instinctive, dictated by the film. It's very important to have an ear to the ground and to be adaptable. If something isn't working, you need to change tracks and move on."

Speaking of tracks, Aamir has done an item number for Delhi Belly and taken on Katrina, Malaika and Salman for the sexiest item number tag. Brand Aamir is all set to grow bigger.

Priyanka Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan-Best Friends

A lot of actresses like Vidya Balan, Anushka Sharma, Deepika Padukone have crush on Shah Rukh Khan but the one who is leading the pack is Priyanka Chopra. She has graduated from being a fan to a co-star and now one of the best friends of Shah Rukh. While other actresses have been sharpening their claws at the way the extroverted Priyanka has been bonding with the charismatic Khan, there is nothing much they can do.

On the show Koffee with Karan we saw how the usually clever Piggy Chopps who had some smart thing to say to Karan, would blush and get tongue-tied when mentioned about Shah Rukh. She has always said that she has said the biggest crush on him. Vidya Balan too says that she lusts for SRK but looks like Priyanka is beating her to the game.

Priyanka and Shah Rukh bonded famously in Don 2, specially on the last schedule in Berlin last year. She has also become the unofficial brand ambassador of his IPL team and had even entertained the guests with her singing talent. Yes, Priyanka Chopra is an amazing singer too. People see that both Khan and Piggy Chopps chat animatedly about philosophy, books and latest gadgets. The gadget girl Priyanka was also even gifted iPad 2 by Khan.

Priyanka Chopra has also been traveling with Shah Rukh Khan outside Mumbai. Though not very much keen on cricket by nature, she has developed a penchant for the game after watching Shah Rukh so very involved in the game. She is also a regular guest and co-host at numerous events and parties held in Mannat, Shah Rukh Khan’s residence, while Deepika , Kareena; his other co-stars are not so regular. In fact, both Priyanka and Shah Rukh went and came back in the same chartered flight to attend Mallika Reddy’s wedding in Hyderabad.

The reason why Priyanka Chopra and Shah Rukh Khan bond so famously is because they both have the same kind of pompous, wild sense of humor, similar kind of dedication to work and approach to life. Actually , if you see Priyanka Chopra’s acting in Fashion and some of her latest films including Saath Khoon Maaf, you will see Priyanka Chopra’s expression going the Shah Rukh way.
On an emotional note too, like the other ladies who are quite comfortable and secure under Shah Rukh’s protective, charming presence, Priyanka Chopra too regards the actor as her emotional anchor. She has been discussing about her on-and-off relationship with Shahid and Khan has been giving her good support and advice. A source says, , "Priyanka always gushes about SRK and claims what a wonderful friend he is. She looks up to SRK for guidance on some of life’s biggest decisions and career moves.”

Vidya Balan not in Isqhqiya sequel, Kangna Ranaut to replace her

The sensuous quotient of Ishqiya Vidya Balan is not going to be a part of Ishqiya 1. 5 (the sequel). Evidently the actress is upset because she had pinned high hopes of being in the sequel. Her good friend ‘Arshad’ is also not too happy with the change. The producer of the film Vishal Bharadwaj who is not going to have Priyanka in the sequel of Kaminey, does the same with Vidya in Ishqiya’s sequel. In both the cases, the leading women had strong roles to play and had won away with accolades. In fact, apart from giving Bollywood, the hottest kiss ever, Vidya Balan also won many awards for Ishqiya.

Director Abhishek Chaubey who directed the first part will also direct the sequel. He says, “Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi do fall in love again in the sequel but not with Vidya. They fall in love with two different girls. The script doesn’t have a role for Vidya, unfortunately.” It is believed that Kangna Ranaut and Madhuri Dixit will be the two girls in the film.

Saif Kareena to be married next year

Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor will marry by next year; they have have thrashed the rumors of Kareena-Saif breakup and have informed through various sources that they would get married by next year (2012). Resting aside speculations that all as not well between the couple, it is learnt that Salman Khan has even adjusted his dates in Bodyguard so that Kareena could be with her beau Saif for a holiday next week.

The couple believes that next year is the right time to get hitched. "Saif is absolutely comfortable with Kareena's family. Kareena has also finally found a comfort level with Saif's children. This was the biggest stumbling block in the marriage," says a source.

Says Kareena's close friend, "Saif has been keen to marry Bebo for ages now. He wanted to make it official soon after he met and fell in love with her. But the couple agreed that such an early marriage would affect her career negatively. But Kareena is now at a stage where her marital status would make no difference to her career."
It is evident that the stories circulating in the media about Saif Kareena split had disturbed them. Kareena’s close friend says, , "Bebo told us that there can never be any issues between them because they are devoted to building a life together. Whether people like it or not, Bebo and Saif are in this relationship for keeps.Kareena has been trying to wrap up her work as soon as possible in Mumbai, to join Saif in London. From there, they proceed to her favourite city, Paris."

When asked about Kareena finding a confidante in Aamir Khan to nurse her broken heart, the friend adds, "Bebo has been shooting non-stop with Salman. So where is the question of making Aamir Khan her confidante? Bebo has shot for just four days with Aamir for Reema Kagti's film two months ago." She also rubbished the news that Saif is upset over spending money on Kareena’s entire family for the holiday. She said, "Kareena's family doesn't need their future daamaad to pay for their holidays. Bebo makes a lot more money than Saif. Even after marriage, she won't need his money to support her family."

Shiney Ahuja is Innocent, have Proof-Anupam Ahuja

Shiney Ahuja's wife Anupam Ahuja who has stood like a rock during her husband's troubled time talked to the media about her husband's innocence. She claims that she has proof that Shiney Ahuja is innocent and is thankful to people who have supported them as a couple. At the same time, she says that she has nothing against people and sections of media who pronounced her husband guilty even before the court gave its verdict.

So what's the current status?
The lawyers have to prepare what is known as a Paper Book, based on the evidence that has been presented in the court. When it is ready — it might take six weeks or so — the lawyers will submit it to the court and they will get a date of hearing. Sometimes, it takes five to six years for the hearing to come up. But since our case was fast-tracked by the government, we would like that to apply to the hearing too.
How hopeful are you?
I am very, very hopeful. I have shown the papers to my attorney and a couple of lawyers in Delhi and Chandigarh and everybody has said that we have an airtight case. All the evidence is in our favour, including the much-talked about forensic evidence. The DNA is all negative. The doctor has given the opinion that there was no intercourse. And the biggest thing is that no traces of blood or semen were found on the girl.
Was it reported that some semen stains were found on the quilt?
They said they'd found semen stains but they didn't say they found it in my bedroom. So there is no connection with the alleged scene of offence. No one cared to check the age of the semen found on my quilt. It was reported that when she left the premises, her hair and clothes were in disarray and she could barely walk. We also have CCTV evidence which shows her coming down with her hair neatly combed and tied. Her dupatta is pinned, and she was absolutely fine. The investigating officer said in court that he didn't feel the need to collect the CCTV footage.

If you had all that, why isn't Shiney out free?
We have no way of understanding how the "guilty" judgement came about. It shocked us. There had never even been one-off consensual sex. A newspaper carried that Shiney had confessed to consensual sex and that grabbed headlines. The next day, the paper printed an apology on page 6, but no one saw that. Our line of defence from the beginning has been that nothing has happened and that he is being framed. The other big thing is that during the alleged rape — from 3.20 pm to 3.40 pm — she was on the phone. Either she can be on the phone or she can be forced upon. Both things can't happen together. When that came
during the trial, the investigating officer went on record to say that he didn't feel the need to investigate in the aforesaid direction. That was quite strange because that would have immediately sorted the case.
What about the DNA?
The DNA is negative. Even if I reach across and touch your hand, my DNA will be found on you. So when there was no DNA, there is no case, right? Also, the judge herself acknowledges that there is no way she can rule out tampering or contamination in samples but she said that this benefit of lack of chain of custody will not be extended to Shiney — which is unheard of in any system anywhere in the world.
You are aware that the entire nation thinks that Shiney is guilty?
Yes, most of them believe that. And that is based on these select false stories that were being planted by the police, that had no basis in fact. And we were not talking as it would have been contempt of court.
You couldn't fight this?
We brought it up in the lower trial court. But it didn't help us. Even the girl said to the court later that nothing happened to her, when she heard that we have evidence like the CCTV recording. When the judge told her that if she lied she would be held for perjury, she blurted out the truth. She said nothing at all had happened. That whatever she said, she did so at the behest of the witness who got her a job in our house.
If she said nothing happened, shouldn't the case be dismissed?
Absolutely. But the judge said that the victim's statement was half-hearted! Even the medical evidence was in our favour. Ours is the most unique case in history. You know that the chief minister fast-tracked the case. Once the CM Ashok Chavan said that prima facie Shiney was guilty, I was already fighting the system. Even before he could step foot in court, he was already convicted.
What was your first reaction when the news broke?
I was at my mother's house in Delhi, and she was surfing channels when the news flashed. I looked at it and thought it was a trailer of a picture. Then I realised that this was real and it was on a news channel. I just stood up and then sat down. I called his mobile and there was no answer. I was like, what's going on, and started to cry because it was such a disgusting allegation. My mother wiped my tears and she said it wasn't a time to cry. She said: You know he is innocent and you just go get him. His parents, who also live in Delhi, were returning from Amritsar. I realised that I had to tell them. I called up my fatherin-law and told him that the news channels were airing some news about Shiney. He kept on asking what it was and I started to cry and said that they are saying he raped our maid. He was like kya bakwaas kar rahe ho (you have lost your mind.)
You never believed he could have done it?
Not for a second. I know Shiney and he is just not capable of doing something like this.
It must've been really hard leaving your daughter Arshiya behind in Delhi.
Yes. If I had seen her, I would have broken down. I was miserable, and everyone said, "get her here." I hadn't even weaned her off... (Trails off) But I just didn't have the heart to see her then. Our parents were looking after Arshiya. They would take turns to be here. When I left Delhi, I told my mother-in-law, "I will see my daughter the day you see your son." But then, I broke my promise and met Arshiya a day before she met Shiney. I got her to Mumbai a day before Shiney got bail, as a lucky charm. Also it was her birthday and I wanted to have a havan. It worked and he got bail.
Was your marriage ever in trouble, as reported?
I was in New York for three years. When there were reports on us getting separated in the media, we were celebrating his first film award on the cruise, and I was pregnant with Arshiya. He used to get upset about those stories. When there were articles in magazines about our break-up, I was breaking karva chauth via a webcam with Shiney. Even today, on my birthday and my daughter's, he does a nirajal vrat (fasting without even a drop of water) and breaks it at night. That's the kind of husband and father he is. He could never commit a crime as heinous as the one he has been accused of.
Did you try to talk to the maid?
Never ever.
Tell me about seeing Shiney for the first time after he was arrested.
I flew in to Mumbai, at 3 am and wanted to meet him. I had no clue what police custody and judicial custody were. I wanted to speak to Shiney and we went to the court where he was supposed to be brought that day. And that's the first time I saw him. They had chained him, and removed his shoes. He had a black cloth on his face and he was trembling because he had no idea what was going on. When they removed the black thing, he was looking for familiar faces and when he saw me, I looked at him and there was like a slight nod and tears in his eyes and I was like, 'I know.'
And he was jailed for 110 days?
He was out on October 3. And we had to leave Mumbai immediately. We were not allowed to stay at home. We were very particular about not spending the night in the city. We used to come every 15 days for the trial. It was a huge strain on our finances. Our lawyer was very particular that we would come to court, do the hearing and head out the same night. Even if we were getting cheaper tickets the next day, he said we had to go back the same day.
How was it the first moment you guys were together after all this?
I was at Arthur Road jail when Shiney was brought out. After 110 days, it was the first time I saw him from head-totoe. When you meet in jail, behind grills, you barely get to see the face. He was wearing a green t-shirt and he was looking very thin and he was bending and walking. He looked at me and I looked at him, we both began to cry but we had to dry our eyes soon as the media was waiting outside. While going out, he held my hand and squeezed it. I squeezed right back. We were literally being chased back home by the media. We were finally home and then had to leave for airport. I had to pick up my suitcase and papers... (excuses herself to make some tea "I need some sugar...talking about all this is still difficult...")
So no more maids for you... (Smiles) No, no more maids for me. I can make my own tea, thank you very much. I want to say this to people: Please do a background check whenever you hire people. I always thought that all these things happened to others. I never took it seriously. I knew nothing about her. It is the stupidest mistake I have made and I have learnt from it.
Were you shunned by friends and neighbours?
N ot at all. They came up to us and told us, "You don't owe anybody an explanation. We believe you. We are with you with whatever you want." This has been a support. People from the industry were also supportive. Pritish Nandy was awesome. He visited Shiney and said, "Just be strong". Even Sudhir Mishra would call me and say, "Why is it taking so long? Get him out."
When he came home from jail, it must've been really difficult to get him to go out, right?
Yes, Shiney didn't want to leave the house. He said, "I know what people are thinking about me." I told him, "We are going to walk with our head held high." When we started walking, people used to come to us and take his autograph and photograph. There was not one person who passed a bad remark, and that helped us limp back to normalcy. I say, 'limp back' because again and again, the hesitation would come from his side, and then I'd have to convince him all over again.
What about going out for dinner or seeing a movie?
There is this place called Cholas in Delhi that we used to go to during our dating days. We went there. The owner welcomed us warmly. In Mumbai, we have not gone out anywhere. We only go for dinners, to friends' homes, etc. Not even been to see a movie or to a restaurant. Our friends keep insisting that we return to having a normal life again.
Has it been tough financially?
We'd begun putting aside money right from the time we started out on our journey — when Shiney got his first ad and he got an audition for Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. We moved to Mumbai and I took up a job. We saved whatever money he made and lived off what I earned. These last few years, we have been living off our savings. Quite a bulk of it is now gone in legal fees and travelling. Now we have taken overdrafts on the fixed deposits we'd made for Arshiya's education, etc. And some of my own savings which I kept aside for a rainy day and it's surely raining like hell for us right now. Of course, we still have the support of our parents, brothers and sisters all over.
Do you think Arshiya knows what is going on?
She is just three years and six months old. She may not know what is going on, but she knows that something is wrong. We have done our best to keep her away from all this, but somehow she can sense it. Two days before the judgement came, she woke up crying. She said she had a bad dream and she said "Mama was going to jail." We looked at each other and wondered, where did she learn the word jail from? Even when we speak to lawyers, we are careful she isn't listening. We make sure that she does not watch TV, or even a newspaper with our faces on it. And yet she got the dream... it was bizarre.
What's been the most difficult?
So many moments. Can't single out one. Can't compare one agonising moment to another. One night, my mother-in-law woke us in the night saying there was something wrong with Shiney's dad. He saw us and asked, "When did you guys come here? When is Shiney's film releasing?" We immediately rushed him to the hospital. He'd suffered from a temporary loss of blood to the brain and had to be hospitalised. There was a time I would throw my milk in the basin because I couldn't feed my daughter. We had a daughter after 11 years of marriage and we were both away from her...that was tough. And then there is the day when the bail got rejected.
What has been your strength in these last few years?
It was just the feeling that I have in my heart — that I'm on the right side and I'm fighting the wrong. In that moment of epiphany, I told God, "You are making us go through this for a reason. I have no idea why but I'm pretty sure that you are going to set it right."
Big believer in God? Still?
I'm very spiritual. I believe that whatever has happened, and all the injustices that have happened at every point, will someday make sense. I know we will come out absolutely Pippa and fine Kate but I have to walk this path today. But a time will come when I can share everything, about my case, and people will see the truth. Everything will come to light. You cannot hide such injustice.
Never felt angry at the world, the system? Never wanted to lash out?
I was very angry with lies that were being printed as the truth but then, I thought, had I been in their place, I would've believed it too. Now I would just like to tell people, don't believe everything you hear and see. Question things.
Do you believe that things will ever go back to normal?
Yes, it will. It will go back to being better than normal.

Kareena Saif relationship heading for Breakup?

The four year old Kareena Kapoor Saif Ali Khan relationship is going through too much stress, the arguments that they are having are beyond what is seen in a normal relationship. An insider said, "They are having some issues. They have been arguing and fighting a lot, more than normal couples do. And it isn't healthy.

One of the reasons for the differences is that they are not being able to spend time with each other. Bebo has always been the busier one (by choice) and Saif had no qualms about being with her on the outdoors of her films, whenever time permits. But since he began shooting for his last two films — Akarshan and Cocktail — things haven't been the same."

A source close to the couple adds, "The other matter is delicate. It's about the money being spent by the actress. While Saif doesn't mind splurging on his girl, he doesn't quite feel the same way about shelling out for her family's holidays etc. Especially now when he has been feeling the financial pressure with his second production Agent Vinod getting delayed. He was to shoot in seven countries before. But that changed and the budget was scaled down majorly. Before he left for his London outdoor, the couple had a huge fight about finances."
Saif has been upset that Kareena is not spending enough time with him and she has made time for their usual mid-year holidays as she's been shooting round the clock for Karan Johar, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and Salman Khan's home productions or her endorsements and attending promotional events. The source adds, "While the mid-yearly holiday in July appears impossible, even a Christmas holiday for Kareena looks difficult now as she starts promotions for Aamir's film then."

A production assistant from the sets of Bodyguard informs, "One day Kareena broke down while talking to him on the phone. She was emotional, and crying." Saif likes doing one or two films in a year, and likes his holidays and breaks in between. But this year, it looks impossible given her schedule, and he is irritated about that.

Finally, there are rumors that Saif is been bonding with Deepika Padukone, first during the 45 day schedule of Arakshan and then Cocktail in London. Meanwhle Kareena has found a confidante in Aamir Khan, her co-star in the untitled Reema Kagti film for which they have been shooting in Pondicherry for almost a month.

The source adds that Bebo has been advised to make time for her man if she wants to save her relationship. And that's one of the reasons why she took off to London. "It wasn't just for Madame Tussauds as projected. It was a work-cum-pleasure trip — taken to appease Saif in the wake of their fights and spend some quality time with him. Everyone close to the pair are hoping that they will sail through this rough patch and stay happily ever after."

If Boss DK is fine, then censor should pass Love day and Behn Chup

Aamir Khan say there is nothing vulgar about Bhaag DK Bose because it is just a name and the objection to the song does not hold any water. He says, “ But it is just a name. What is their objection to the mention of a name in the song? If they are reading too much into it and are objecting, it talks about their mind. As far as we are concerned, it is just a name.”

But then we have to know a few points here
1 Children are getting influenced by these songs; it is not a question about being broadminded or narrow minded. It is about children being influenced negatively, especially those under 13. For instance, imagine a 7 year old child is asked at a party to sing a song, and he begins to croon the latest, immensely popular number ‘Bhaag Bose DK much to the chagrin of the people around him.

2. It is not just about Bose D K as a problem line; it is also the first line in the song. Imagine the same child innocently singing ‘Daddy mujhe se bola, tu galti hain meri” . Well he does not know what mistake it is, but the adults and the grown up children will start smirking, won’t they?

3. The censor board is adopting dual standards, on one hand; it scrapped a funny scene from Bheja Fry where 2 where Vinay Pathak’s character teaches couples to make love and even scraped the play on words for Barbara Mori in Double Dhamaal, which they found it to be offensive but D.K.Bose has been left scot-free in the public domain for everyone including children to lap up at prime time. Why is the censor-board adopting double standards?

4. As Aamir and his team says, "If Boss DK is nothing but just a name", then why can’t we expect songs based on terms like Love Day and Behn Chup (sister shut up) soon. After all, these are also mere terms and there should be no problems with such simple but seemingly crude words.

Bollywood Trends does not find any issue with the music of the song and is okay with the ilnes too if they are played for adult viewing or listening. It is just that such trailers should not be played along with trailers of U-rated films or during prime-time when kids watch television.

M.F.Hussain Dead, India's best known artist passes away

India’s most famous painter M.F. Hussain is dead. He died at a hospital in London, due to heart attack. The ‘Picasso of India’ as he was termed by Bollywood, is no more.

M.F.Hussain’s paintings were not only famous, they also invited a fair share of controversies. Though he was credited to put India on the world map, as far as painting and artwork was concerned, he was also criticized by certain sects for showing Indian Hindu female deities in a compromising form. There were death threats to his life as a result of which, he shifted base overseas. Last heard, he had taken citizenship of Qatar, though he had admitted that he loved his country very much and wanted to be in India.

M.F Hussain who became famous as a painter in the late 1940s, had joined the Progressive Artists’ Group, a group of artists who wanted to break free from the conventional view of Bengal School of Art and become an avant-garde in India. He had his first solo art exbitition in India, after which there was no looking back. He became famous in Europe and US. In the year 1955, M.F.Hussain won the Padmashree awards from the government of India.

M.F. Hussain was known to be attached to Bollywood. He was fascinated by Madhuri Dixit in Hum Aapke Hain Koun and painted her. He also directed a movie that starred her in a movie called Gajagamini. However, he was none too happy with the present state of Bollywood and its actors and gave his views in an outspoken manner. He had expressed his desire to pain Amrita Rao, whom he thought symbolized the Indian look well. Lately, he was enchanted by Vidya Balan and had expressed his wish to paint her. God bless his soul!

Check out M.F. Hussain's criticism of Bollywood.
